45 illegal cases over food safety exposed in January-June

Quote:
Police exposed 45 cases of illegal behavior damaging food safety in the first half of this year, the National Police Agency said Thursday. The figure for the six-month period already exceeds the 37 cases detected for all of last year, according to the NPA.

The illegal behavior includes false labeling of food production areas, such as selling Chinese-made eels and bamboo shoots as domestic products, and distribution of pesticide-contaminated rice as edible. ‘‘An illegal resale case involving contaminated rice has stirred public awareness, prompting authorities’ examinations (on food safety),’’ an NPA official said. ‘‘Thus the revelations of illegal activities have increased.’’

9/11 ad for WWF causes a crisis for DDB Brasil
Quote:
An obscure ad that ran once in a small Sao Paulo newspaper months ago has come back to haunt DDB Brasil and its conservation client, the WWF in Brazil, in the latest example of the internet exposing a local ad to global condemnation.
Now the ad had a print version in which it shows airliners flying toward the southern part of Manhattan with the Towers still there. The ad was disavowed by WWF, but now DDB Brasil is saying that it was approved in Dec 2008.

A disturbing (esp. if you saw the actual event, IMHO) video presentation - now being said as not being official - can also be found on YouTube, unless it gets pulled...

Why would an ad for a group to protect and preserve the environment be using a human-caused attack as its driving point instead of, say, the 2005 tsunami in APac or 2008 earthquake in China... Both are rather sensitive topics, but at least they were, well, natural disasters. Perhaps trying to get people involved and say, "Yes, you can make a difference"?

WWF says that they weren't involved in the making of that ad.

This is the statement by the WWF in the article.
Quote:
WWF strongly condemns this offensive and tasteless ad and did not authorize its production or publication. It is our understanding that it was a concept offered by an outside advertising agency seeking our business in Brazil. The concept was summarily rejected by WWF and should never have seen the light of day. It is an unauthorized use of our logo and we are aggressively pursuing action to have it removed from websites where it is being currently featured. We strongly condemn the messages and the images portrayed in this ad. On behalf of WWF, here in the US and around the world, we can promise you this ad does not in any way reflect the thoughts and feelings of the people of our organization.

Not in the actual making, no, but the article from my link does say that people on both sides, WWF and DDB Brasil, having apologized, in Portugeuse (only?), for the ad and 'attributing it to "the inexperience of some professionals on both sides, and not bad faith or disrespect toward American suffering.'". I'm assuming here that the WWF professional(s) mentioned only did the approving of the work in Dec 2008 which DDB Brasil mentioned.

Istanbul (Sept 3): A journalist has fled Russia after suggesting the Arctic Sea cargo ship that was apparently hijacked in July may have been carrying illegal weapons.

Mr Mikhail Voitenko said he had been told to leave Moscow or face arrest. The editor of Sovfracht, an online maritime journal, fled on Wednesday (Sept 2), saying he may not be able to return as his life would be in danger.

Eight men, mainly from Estonia, have been charged with hijacking and piracy over the case. The men are suspected of seizing the ship and its 15-man Russian crew after raiding it disguised as police.

The alleged hijackers were taken to Russia after the ship was spotted 480km off the west coast of Africa on Aug 16.

Mr Voitenko — who was among the first to cast doubt on official explanations about the ship's disappearance — told the BBC it was nonsense to suggest pirates had been involved. Instead he suggested the ship may have been carrying a secret shipment of weapons as part of a private business deal by state officials.

Speaking to the BBC from Turkey, Mr Voitenko said he had received a threatening phone call from "serious people" whom he suggested may have been members of Russia's intelligence agency, the FSB. The caller told Mr Voitenko that those involved in the mysterious case of the Arctic Sea were very angry with him because he had spoken publicly, and were planning on taking action against him, he said.

He also said Nato knew exactly what had happened to the Arctic Sea. A Nato spokesman said the alliance had been in contact with Russia throughout the crisis, but would not say anything more.

The FSB refused to comment on the allegations.

North Korea says in last stage of enriching uranium

Quote:
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Friday it was closer to a second way of making nuclear weapons, a move analysts saw as a new tactic to put pressure on the international community after a month of conciliatory gestures.

The chief U.S. envoy for the North, Stephen Bosworth, said the enrichment claim was "of concern." He was in Beijing on a trip to Asia to discuss ways to bring Pyongyang back to long-stalled negotiations on giving up its nuclear ambitions.

"Experimental uranium enrichment has successfully been conducted to enter into completion phase," the North's KCNA news agency quoted its United Nations delegation as saying in a letter to the head of the U.N. Security Council (UNSC).

The United States has long suspected the North of having a secret program to enrich uranium for weapons. Experts have said it has not developed anything near a full-scale uranium program while it has enough plutonium for six to eight bombs.

"I think for all of us, it reconfirms the necessity to maintain a coordinated position on the need for complete, verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," Bosworth said, after meetings with Chinese officials.

The North said its latest steps were in response to tighter sanctions.

At the United Nations, the mission of the United States, which currently holds the Security Council presidency, said it had received the North Korean letter and circulated it to the other 14 members of the council.

U.N. sanctions have hurt the impoverished North's arms trade, one of its few significant exports, and analysts said it may be angered its latest attempts at conciliation with the outside world have been largely rebuffed.

The United States has refused to ease up on the sanctions, and sent its point man for their enforcement to Asia last month to build support.

"Now they (North Korea) are taking the road that they know will drive a response out of all countries -- the military way -- and leaving them to decide what to do," said Cho Myung-chul, an expert on the North at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy.

WEAPONISING

North Korea added that reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel rods was at its final phase and extracted plutonium was being weaponised.

U.S. families turn to food stamps as wages drop
Quote:
The number of working Americans turning to free government food stamps has surged as their hours and wages erode, in a stark sign that the recessions is inflicting pain on the employed as well as the newly jobless.

While the increase in take-up is often attributed to the sharp rise in unemployment – which on Friday hit 9.7 per cent – the Financial Times has learnt that some 40 per cent of the families now on food stamps have “earned income”, up from 25 per cent two years ago.

The agriculture department, which runs the programme, attributes this rise to workers having their hours cut back.
IMHO, there is no shame in turning to food stamps and/or subsidies in bad times, but this change was a surprise. The 9.7% unemployment number is also a bit low; the U-6 number in the latest jobs report is now 16.8%.

Rival protesters clash on streets

One side wanted to get rid of the Islamic community while the other would like to have a united community. In the end, a clash broke out.

Actually from I read and watched, the other group appeared to be protesting against Islamic extremism, not against the Islamic community. And the other group appears to think that anti-Islamic extremism = Nazism/Racism/Fascism.

They are slightly right on that part. Anti-racist = racist.

Anyway with the economy down in doldrums and China becoming the next US of the 21st century, why do these people even have time to mount protests?

Tokyo (Sept 6): Japanese sighed over photos of their likely future emperor today as Prince Hisahito (right), the first male heir born to the imperial family in 41 years, turned three.

The imperial family is well-loved in Japan, but its members' lives are heavily cloistered, unlike those of the royal families of Britain and other Western nations.

Newspapers published photos today of the prince wearing a kimono embroidered with images of a crane, a symbol of Japan and longevity. TV news showed the smiling boy, nicknamed "Yuyu" and "Yuchan" by his parents — Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko — running into his father's arms.

Hisahito is third in line to succeed Emperor Akihito, 75, on Japan's Chrysanthemum Throne, after Crown Prince Naruhito, 49, and Prince Akishino, 43, the Emperor's second son.

Prince Naruhito and his wife, Princess Masako, have one daughter, who could have inherited the throne if a legal change had been made to allow women in the imperial succession. The proposal was put aside as Hisahito's birth approached.

Prince Akishino and his wife also have two daughters. As for little Hisahito, reports said he loves his tricycle and knows how to dress himself.

That's what I thought too..

Apparently, the term "Islamic Extremism" is derogatory to begin with.

The idea is pretty much like the United States' invasion of Iraq in which people who mount protests against the actions would mount banners with the term "anti-Christian Extremism" or "anti-Catholic Extremism", how does that sound?

It doesn't seem appropriate at all yet the idea of anti-Islamic Extremism seems perfectly okay, talking of double standards nowadays. Just because the invasion of Iraq was carried out by American soldiers who are also religious individuals does not mean that it is okay to blame all the Americans from that particular religion over it. And thus, why is it okay for the right-wingers to blame the entire Islamic community over terrorist attacks committed by terrorist organizations? This is totally wrong...

Why do these people have time to mount such protests? Well... If you see a bunch of guys holding up banners saying "No More Churches" and "Anti-Christian/Catholic Extremism", would you oppose the action and clash with them? In fact, I get the feeling that the end result would be much worse as that multiple right-wing groups will be bringing shotguns to the protests and things would surely get ugly. For that matter, the guys who clashed with the right-wing protests are pretty much kind..

Generally, the idea of "No More Churches" and "Anti-Christian/Catholic Extremism" is exactly the same as "No More Mosques" and "Anti-Islamic Extremism" as that is a mass movement of dividing up a community into hatred and malice which is wrong. In the long-run, these naturally trivial misunderstandings and misinformation on the issue of terrorism and religion could lead to an escalation of the situation making things more chaotic and problematic as that there are always mass movements by either religious fanatics or right-wingers.

Thus, you got the entire idea wrong.

It is so definitely not Anti-racist = racist.
