Question the Haunted Hard Drive

*cues thunder and lightning*
anyways to be more specific, I recently bought a new internal Hard Drive for my computer, because I'm starting to worry about the stability of my main ones, well I attached the SATA II cable and power to it, and my computer seems to recognize it.... though apparently I missed something as it doesn't show up on on my GUI. I know about the RAID, and jumper cables, though I'm not exactly sure how to fully activate my second internal HDD. Do I need to set it as a slave drive, or is it possible for it to kinda act like my External HDD (e.g. Independent of my main (read C:/ ) one)?
*the ghost of my first computer flies by*

First is the BIOS picking it up? If it's not there then there's a problem. If it is recognised there then I suspect that you haven't initialised the harddisk in control panel in XP or Vista

It may simply not be partitioned or formatted (or incorrectly formatted).

Try looking in Computer Management under Disk Management.

You can get to Computer Management by right-clicking on (My) Computer and selecting Manage.

If you have Vista, you can find the "Computer" item in your start menu (assuming you haven't reverted it to classic mode).

If you have XP, you probably have a "My Computer" icon on your desktop.

it shows up as Disk 2 and as "Not Initialized" well, I guess that's a start, since I also managed to find a lost partition on my main HDD and got it back to working order, though my new HDD doesn't seem as ready yet.

Afaik, then all you need to do is right-click on the not-initialized drive to partition/format it and it'll be ready (and show up in Explorer).

The quick format option is fully sufficient (it saves you and your drive a lot of time).
