The CPU to get for this holiday season

Well, my current desktop is going on 8 years and in danger of having multiple components failing... so with the holiday season (and sales) coming up, I think it's about time I got a new one.

From what I've read, it seems that the Intel i7-860 Lynnfield is the best in terms of price for performance. Agree/Disagree?

And does anyone have a recommendation for motherboards? (or does it even matter?)

Thanks.

EDIT: Also, any recommended fan upgrades over the stock?

Well, it's a bit difficult to say. What sort of budget do you have in mind for this computer? What are you going to be using it for?

Unless money is no object you should outline how much you plan to spend and what you want to do with the PC. It will affect just about everything people will recommend because of the huge variation in prices of different components depending on how good you want them to be.

Whatever you get, I'd recommend it's Core i7 based.

Intel i7 would be the fastest and would be able to handle intensive stuff like encoding and also games like Crysis and GTA4. Note that a Core i7 would require different type of RAM since it only accepts DDR3 RAM and i7 Motherboards only have DDR3 RAM. Everything else you can use from your other computer (like DVD drive, etc).

If you're on a budget and need to build a ghetto rig, AMD just recently put out a 3-core processor that costs $87.
