Pop-up sigs are where something, mainly in your case a character, comes out from the main area or border of the sig, e.g;

I'l loving your Highschool of the Dead sigs though, I can't wait till it's aired

The trick is to slice the sig: to save the transparents slice in gif or png and the full slice in jpeg.
