Already watched/read both. I wouldn't really call it coming of age though. I don't know. When thinking about it it's more about an study about "growing up" than a series about characters growing up themselves. There's a very fine lining there.

And I also watched now and then, here and there, which seems a little to plot focused to be a coming of age series for me. Maybe it's just me?

I actually thought Shun being plunged into a violent war of greed and blood, and losing his innocence by being a participant was one of the pivotal things about the series. When he returned to the "normalcy", nothing could ever be the same again with all the knowledge and experiences he gained. Also, Sara's gradual development too. I still pity her in a way..
