Romance Anime Similar to Toradora?

Spice and Wolf S1 and S2 and Toradora! are the only romance animes that I've watched(sort of a new anime fan), but the level of character development between not only the main characters, but also the side ones was unlike anything I've seen before. The gang in Toradora, especially Ami are among the few characters in fiction that I can actually empathize with. The emphasis on self discovery and introspection was also a hit with me, and the coming of age story fit well in the high school setting.

Are there other shows that have romance that is as well developed? I don't mind action in shows, but usually story and character development are more important to me. Happy endings are also preferred, but I can also deal with a tear jerker if the romance is worth it.

For reference:here are all the shows that I've seen (just started watching Clannad).

I think True Tears is an obvious pick. While the core cast is relatively small, each is extraordinarily well-developed and there's a lot of pretty complex psychological stuff going on.

Cross Game is a less obvious but no less stellar choice. While the main romance takes a very long time to develop, the relationship is at the core of the story right from the beginning. There are a large number of supporting characters that are realistic and complex.

Cross Game is a good pick.

Maison Ikkoku of course is one of the best romances ever.

I'd also pick Crest of the Stars.

NANA is a story filled with drama and romance, one of the best in my opinion. Off the top of my head, there's also Lovely Complex, Honey and Clover, ef - a tale of memories, Bokura ga Ita and Kimi ni Todoke.

I second true tears and ef. I also recommend Nodame Cantabile for great character development.

It's a bit different than ToraDora but I think you should watch Welcome to the NHK.
And if you're looking for shows like Spice and Wolf I recommend Crest of the Stars and it's sequels.

Ef: A Tale of Memories then Ef: A Tale of Melodies, the first one is definitly recommended. REC(not nessecarily like toradora, after all, toradora is in its own league, but very short and good romance). Also try Angel beats, one of my favorites, its not fully romance but the last few eps is. the anime is 13 eps long. try it. you will cry at the end, i garantee you.

I second this, Zero no Tsukaima, and Shakugan no Shana were both made by J.C Staff

If you liked Toradora, you might want to give those a shot

I haven't seen Zero No Tsukaima, but if they liked Taiga they will most likely like Shana .

Louise is somewhat close to Taiga, because she always wants to beat up her familiar for doing/ perverted stuff or looking at other girls But sometimes the beat-down is over the limit.. So thats where the difference lies.

Well the difference already lies on the reasons the characters want to throw a punch or something like that to the male lead.

Oh the similarity probably lies on both Louise and Taiga not realizing they love the male lead, and following into "awkward love" with another character.
