That's you speaking as an encoder/timer. People who actually do something creative tend to have fun, probably more fun that you can have chilling with the average fansubber.

Sentences where "It's" actually means something are fine. Otherwise, unless the character speaking is Confucius, they ought to be avoided so dialogs won't become too stiff and clunky.

These "It's" starting sentences are prevalent enough. As for them being mistakes or not, what constitutes a mistake from the editing perspective? Not just grammar and spelling errors, I hope.

Well, mistakes are when it something is actually wrong. There is no gray area. If the line goes off 2 seconds early - mistake. If they mistranslate something - mistake. If they put the wrong sound file with the show - big mistake. Mistakes cover all aspects of errors, not just grammar and spelling. Something that doesn't agree with your personal preferences is not a mistake.

The subject is often omitted in spoken Japanese, and thoughtlessly padding in an "it's" seems to be the favorite gadget people defer to. Much like しょうがないな, being dumped to "can't help it", or けど ending sentences, where the "but" is better off at the beginning of the next sentence.

Of course, these are not as black and white as you've been idealizing. They don't break any grammar or spelling rules, but barring some exceptions, I wouldn't want them in my subs.

Translating and editing are sophisticated enough to have the use for these gray area definition of mistakes, and these common traps are simple enough to recognize that it'd be a shame to keep falling into them.

Now let's pause for a moment from helpful tips, for an injection from our personal-preference-and-ideals injection specialist next post.

And that is personal preferences, not mistakes. Like I stated. And mistakes are simply black and white. There is no ideal here - unless you insert your preferences.

I only chill with the best of the best (i.e. gg) these days. Then again gg isn't really a fansubbing group and more of a circlejerk of people who happen to fansub, and hating fansubbing is sort of our thing, so yeah maybe my opinion isn't all that representative after all.

Yes, you'd probably enjoy yourself more if you did things other than left click, right click, and take people way too seriously.

No, you give preferences. This is a mistakes thread. You're not trolling.

Writing for an audience that fetishizes literalism, that's a sign of success!

It's hard to come up with mistakes that aren't necessarily personal preferences, but I'm going to try my best and make up a list of things I've noticed.

1) Splitting lines in the wrong place or not timing it to a break in the speaker's sentence.

2) Having 2 lines show up at once when 2 people speak one right after the other, instead of one line at a time. Naturally when you're reading subs, you read the whole thing at once, so it takes away from the show when you already know what's coming.

3) Not translating certain texts that appear on screen. Examples would be newspapers or cellphone texts.

4) From this thread I understand that TL: Notes are a preference, so I think the biggest mistake when they are included is that they don't stay up long enough to read.

A few more things that may just be a preference...

5) Using honorifics after everyone's name. If you are watching the show, chances are you have the sound on and can pick up -kun or -san. And if even you can't pick it up, does it really have that much importance to the story? Exception being if they use a strange honorific as some sort of joke.

6) Using the person's name instead of "you" or "I". Example being, "Well I know Sora-chan doesn't like that," and the speaker is obviously talking right to Sora-chan who probably knows her own name and doesn't need the reminded.

Two more things that just popped to my mind:

Refusing to release the main release as 480p when it's a totally SD show and as a result the main release is upscaled to some degree.

Thinking that grain is an artefact.

I'd like to add "doing ordered chapters even though you can't make the transitions flawless" to the list.

Or ordered chapters for a shaft show even if you can make the transition flawless.

Well, if we're going on about that, I'd like to add that not having chapters at all is a mistake as well. Make it easy for people to skip jpoop OPs and EDs!

But how're we supposed to get them to watch our beautiful karaoke if we put in chapters?!

By pretending you just released the new episode of ${this season's favourite moeblob anemo}, when it's actually your precious phallic karaoke on repeat!

Makes me wonder though, can you create infinite loops with ordered chapters?

I agree, especially for dvd rips. I mean if you get to skip the work of translating and at least spend 2-5 minutes making chapters.

By encoding your episodes into a single GOP (i.e. forcing no I-frames except the first one).

That way the files aren't seekable at all! You have to watch them all the way through!

Good for preloaded advertisements for your group's ad-laden website as well.
