You're so right and yet so wrong at the same time ... with the pacing we've got, there's a high chance that one of the total KEY scenes of the show will happen at the end of ep4, and it will define Ayase's role in the story very well.

Still, wow, Kirino's dad is so right, it's amazing. Thanks to him, I completely don't care about the protagonist anymore now.
Really? Because of the way Kyousuke has been sticking up for Kirino, he lost your sympathy?

The way I see it (based on _my_ European cultural background) Kirino's dad was generally right, but only to a degree.

Quote:
Though the fact everything was solved with punch was pretty... meh...
This is very much open to interpretation. Personally, I think the most logical explanation is this:

1) He noted how massively Kyousuke was invested in this, protecting the sister he thought Kyousuke never got along with.

2) As a policeman that he is, I believe he was able to identify Kyousuke's act as what it was: An act to protect Kirino.

3) He decided to heed both his kids' request, and his "I don't care anymore" kind of turn-a-blind-eye-on-it approach was the easiest way to do it (and relatively asian in style)

4) The punch against Kyousuke was to establish that he was still the boss in this house, and to punish Kyousuke for his flabbergastingly unacceptable behavior.

Quote:
Still, Kyousuke's argument that it's okay to do something if you have the passion and are making friends isn't true at all. In other words, if I go do drugs and get a "better" life and get passionate over it, than it is fine? Hmm? Of course, his Dad counters by telling him that it isn't good if it brings harm to her. Which it isn't, so... It's fine, yes.
Playing eroges and taking drugs are hardly comparable, your analogy feels a bit strained here.

The point that Kyousuke was driving home was that her anime/eroge side was an intrinsic part of Kirino, and trying to deny this to her would be wrong (and probably futile) - instead, it could rather harm the family bonds. Kirino is a honor student and already entered the professional world, earning significant money of her own. She is very confident, mature and independent for her age, and obviously someone who has entered society successfully. Shouldn't this give her some leeway and her parents a basis for tolerance and trust?

Kirino is no NEET. Her social life is also (seemingly) healthy. And alot of the "otaku" bias has to be taken with a grain of salt, just like their dad already indicated. And withholding the issue of sex from adolescents till the age of 18 is downright retarded. Kirino is 14 during episode 3, so breaching the subject of sex education is overdue anyway. Naturally, openly sanctioning watching porn merely for the stimulation of the sex drive is wrong either. But just like the mother knows (and tolerates) Kyousuke's stash of porn, I don't see looking the other way with eroge's as a criminal offense. As long as Kirino does okay, just like she always has.

Now I know you guys got excited from watching this amazing episode and want to post your impressions as quick as possible, but you may want to double check your grammar in the future. I know English isn't your first language for some of you, which is fine, but from you guys living in the US, it's pretty to hard to read through. Sorry if this offends you. It's nothing personal.

Moving on, epic showdown between father and son, and rather familiar too. Kyousuke isn't very bright to expose Kirino's secret collection, but he made up for it by his manliness. Father is unfazed though and brings up good points instead of resorting to bickering. Awesome parent. I know I wouldn't want my 14 year old daughter be exposed to dirty stuff. Son, eh, that's puberty. I know, gender equality and all that, but in reality it's a little different.

Anyway, I really like how it's resolved within minutes, realistic or not, instead of dragging it out and taking all the fun out of the show. We now have 9 more episodes for some juicy nerd behaviour in their natural habitat and hopefully a second season in the future. Manami fighting!

I really enjoyed this episode, this was the part in the novel and manga that made me really start loving this series. Kyousuke final resolution for the problem at hand was awesome!

I like their dad, although he probably needs to be a bit more open-minded (although he does open to anime after Kyousuke talks to him). And his stance against anime pass me as genuine care for his daughter, instead of the kind of parents that are more worried about their or their family reputation.

I didn't expect Kirino's secret to be discovered so quickly by her parents. It sounds like it happened the exact same way as with Kyousuke too: she bumped into her dad and dropped her game (and wasn't it actually the same game?!). At first, I thought she had purposely revealed her secret to her father as this was what her discussion with Kuroneko and Mrs Vagina seemed to lead up to, but nope. I suppose she wasn't as naive as to think her uptight father would accept her hobby as readily as Kuroneko and Saori's parents did.

The father/son showdown was awesome. I can't believe Kyousuke threatened to beat the crap out of his father (as if he could do it), that alone warranted a punch. Daddy was actually a lot more reasonable than I thought, and I say he's totally right to want to keep his daughter away for R-18 games.

And, uh, sorry, I'm probably one of those people using bad grammar.

Nah, you're fine.

I was mainly pointing out the wrong use of verbs and missing prepositions in some posts. Sorry to be a grammar nazi.

Personally I think it would have been best if Kyousuke insisted to their father to let Kirino play the all-age versions rather than the R-18 ones. In that sense he wouldn't have needed to take the bullet for Kirino, and their dad doesn't have to think of his son as some perverted siscon.

Of course now Kirino owes Kyousuke big time... hmm...

He definitely jumped the gun. I agree with the dad about Kirino playing such a game. But our hero had to save the heroine.

Besides, we got our first "Aniki" moment and even I admit that it was cuuuute.

Hmm? The girl had a name?
...Ah... Come to think of it, in the first episode...?

Well, I felt Kyousuke's argument was wrong and fully sided with his dad's argument. And considering he hasn't impressed me at all through the episodes so far, I didn't really care about him that much in the first place.

I guess it is.

Maybe not the same thing, but I was just using it to point out that Kyousuke's statement was flawed. That is should be allowed because she is passionate about it and makes friends from it.
True, drugs aren't the same and are on a different scale, but it is a easy example to use to show why it shouldn't be allowed just because of that.
And yeah, she is all of that, so I believe there is nothing wrong with having anime and stuff.
But having R-18 stuff? Even if it is not a crime, not allowed/tolerated, for me. Like you said, "openly sanctioning watching porn merely for the stimulation of the sex drive is wrong."

I completely agree with this, I think Kyousuke's Dad raised a good point about confiscating the R-18 material. I mean yes, almost everyone would have porn before they're of age, and there's nothing the parents can do about it, but as long as they aren't adult yet and they still live under the same roof then they still have to live by their rules. Not just their rules, really, the fact that it's already rated 18 and above means the rule comes from the game developer as well, and the father can't be faulted at all if he want to confiscate that. Speaking of which, as Kirino certainly doesn't fap to the games and is in it mostly to see the cute little sisters' behavior towards their brothers, I think having the all-ages version would be no problem. Of course, knowing the target market, I'd suppose that a lot of games in those genre will be R-18....

And really, this is why Kyousuke is truly amazing; not only did he stand up for his sister, he even went out of his way to take a bullet in order to protect his sister. He doesn't even need to go that far either, most of these is due to Kirino's fault anyway (advise: please buy less fashionable bags if it means that stuff will fall down less often. Seriously, this is the 2nd time already).

Another thing that causes me to sympathize with Kyousuke is that I got the impression, from the dining table conversation last week and the fact that the father is way angrier at Kirino than at him, that the parents simply care less about him than they do to Kirino. He's not that bad, just average, but it really pales in comparison to Kirino who is pretty much perfect in most accounts (looks, academics, physical fitness, etc). They don't compare him to his little sister anymore; it's like that as long as Kirino is amazing and he doesn't bring shame to the family, he can be doomed in mediocrity for all they care. And yet despite all that, when the opportunity comes to show that at least there's one aspect where he is more favorable than Kirino in his father's eyes, he still protect her, even debase himself further. Kirino really owes him big time; the gratefulness at the end is cute and a nice start, but it's nowhere near enough compared to his sacrifice.

In short, I'm really impressed with Kyousuke that while at first I (and probably many others too) hope that if they have a little sister, they wish that it's as cute as Kirino, now I change my mind. Now, I hope that if I has an older brother, I wish that he'll be as awesome as Kyousuke. I wish that if the focus shifted more on Kyousuke in future episodes, it'll give an opportunity for Kirino to repay his kindness and show her appreciation of his brother, perhaps even eliciting the phrase "there's no way my older brother is this awesome"

There is also the little part about her eroge being about little sisters.

I don't think Kyousuke realized he was admitting to playing an eroge about little sisters, in his sister's room, on her computer. That part was really funny. I sure wouldn't have stuck my neck our that much.

Ep 3, kyousuku pulls a Madarame. The power of the tsundere transformation of his sister is overwelming to him. So which meganeko should he go after, Bigzilla or his classmate?

I doubt that. If this was really the case, then their mother wouldn't have trusted him with handling the situation as much as she did. The fact that she pretty much left it to him and jokingly (?) said she'd need some beer afterward for their father means that she believed in Kyousuke enough to try and fix things in the family. She didn't pry into how knowledgeable he was in the entire affair and didn't pry into what his plans were when he asked for the albums, even if she wasn't sure what he'd do.

As for daddy, the fact that he didn't wave him off and listened entirely and properly to what Kyousuke had to say, and even restrained himself from falcon punching his son for grabbing his collar to me says he respects him enough for what he's trying to to and is willing to listen.

These aren't things parents who have left you to your own devices would do. They were willing to listen to what he had to say on his sister's behalf because they respected him as a member of the family, even if he is sort of a slacker.

Best episode ever. It's was soo that now I'm sad because I'll be comparing all the next episodes with this one, and I'm pretty sure they won't be as good.

OMG this ep was so great , had a lot of laugh moments

Kyou vs Dad battle was awesome . I agree with you with Dad and the R-18 . Fortunately Kyou save the day choosing the right path
Well if i were a father i'll pay attention to childrens's hobbies too .

But Dad said that he don't care anymore about him so will he let him keep going ? I mean , a father would fear if his son will do x on his daughter you know .

Anyway , can we expect a Kyou x Manami ? ^^

.
That scene was surprising , Kyou "I'll beat the crap out of you" and Dad did nothing , fortunately
This kind of thing doesn't happen often though .

You know, I guess you're right. I seem to have get the wrong impression, maybe I'm a bit too influenced by the dining room scene last episode when he says that the rest of the family doesn't care about him, but seeing at your points it seems that they may care about him also, even if they aren't really that good in showing it. The parents may not be perfect, but they're not all that bad after all.

Great episode with a lot of realistic influence, making it easy to connect with.

My only problem was with Kyousuke's over-the-top argument: granted, yelling does come quite easy when it concerns family arguments, but I felt like Kyousuke wasn't going anywhere and that the Kousaka father only agreed to let Kirino keep her hobby if only just to have Kyousuke shut up.

Judging from a lot of comments, it sounds like the Comiket event is taking place too soon in the anime adaptation: despite spoilers, just exactly what happens in between now and Comiket that's critical to the plot?
