Hopefully this will save some time for everyone going forward...

PLEASE READ
  1. Yosuga no Sora anime will be told in a branching/"Omnibus" format. This means there'll be a story arc for each of the four main heroines (Kazuha, Akira, Nao, and Sora).
  2. This is confirmed by the official Blu-Ray solicitations, and the ending of episode 4.
  3. The structure of the episodes is listed here. Episode 1 is common to all routes, Episode 2 is common to Kazuha and Akira, and Episode 7 is common to Nao and Sora. Including the common episodes, all arcs have 4 episodes, except for Sora's arc which has 5.
  4. Motoka's story is being told, to the extent that it will be, in the omake section after each episode. (Incidentally, the second ED in each episode is for this omake segment.)
  5. Kozue's story will not be told as one of the main routes, but it's possible (unknown) that she could take over the omake segments in the second half of the anime (episodes 7 through 12). (So far Motoka's story has continued all the way through.)
  6. Show a little courtesy and catch-up on the thread before you post so you don't ask the same question that's already been asked. If someone asks a question that has been answered by this post, please link to this post.

What the heck is "AO"? "Adults Only"? Or...?

I don't think we should expect a harem scenario in this franchise.

Yes, this is why we need some more advanced "sticky" functionality on this board. Apparently most people don't actually use the "latest read post" function on this board to catch up... or they're just supremely lazy/selfish and don't care if everyone has already posted the same question.

I think that and perhaps confirmation of the format may have helped as well. (Some game fans may have been tentative, not sure whether the anime was going to back off of the romantic development.) I still also want to see how Sora's BD sales will be compared to the other heroines.

Oh -- no, I don't think there'll be any need for anime-original endings in this format. At most we'll continue to get re-sequencing and small variations to help them squeeze the content into the allotted time.

I guess it's their way of actually trying to please everyone. Nothing wrong with that if it works...

As to the episode, somewhat rushed development but it's expected now. I found the bedroom scene more comical than anything else. Oh well on to Akira...

rofl at how first everyone's immediate reaction to multiheroine is 'oh school days', then as soon as omnibus format is introduced 'oh amagami'. Just enjoy the show for what it is...
That said, I want Sora route, quote Serenade_Beta *taps table*. But I'll enjoy the ride until then.

Omnibus, I'm glad that I don't have to give up on this show, they are doing it the only way they'd be able to do it correctly IMO.

What's the deal with the people gwaffing over the minor sex scene (and I mean very minor, as in not even really qualifying to be considered one). Is this the first time you people have seen an anime that wasn't rated 4kids only? Grow a pair.

wonder if omnibus format will be a tread for a while. Amagami and Sora seem to be getting favorable receptions, and it does have its share of pros. and cons. one being that each girl gets their time to shine so fans of either girls are satified.
Unlike other eroge adaptations that just really focus on a main 'canon' girl, and end up leaving fans of other girls just wishing their girl got a good end.

Was kind of looking forward to seeing Akira's dance, but I guess that be saved for her arc.

I was going to edit your post as I've been religiously removing all other references to School Days so far, but I will grant you this. People seem to have this fixation on comparing shows to others they already know rather than just taking things for what they are. In fact, unless I'm mistaken, I think this is the first anime to ever use this exact story structure (with the multiple branch points), not to mention that the exact way it's developing each story makes it a bit hard to place compared to other TV anime. I read one review today that said simply of this series: "it's porn"... and, in a sense, maybe it isn't so completely wrong. It's simply that the ratio of story to risque content is much higher, which makes it a lot more tolerable to me than a regular "hentai anime" (which I almost invariably can't stand).

Anyway, bottom line, I think you're right that people would be better served to think of this as a unique production that builds on ideas used before but combines them in a unique way.

Kazuha's Heart

Regardless of series or the genre, omnibussing will always cause a story to be compressed, and this is my biggest complaint with the series and this arc so far. It feels really, REALLY rushed, because the essentials of the Kazuha route it would seem only existed for 2 episodes, with the first two episodes of the series being the typical common routes of the series, with the end of episode two being the branch point where all other routes begin. For those not familiar with the Visual Novel format, consider it the point where the stories diverge depending on the choice of the player/main character, with each choice essentially leading to a specific girl.

That said, two episodes it really cutting it close, and though I am unfamiliar with Kazuha’s route I can still tell that it was rushed to fit two episodes, with the probable cuts here and there. Kazuha’s central drama as we can see is her guilt as a younger sister and her blaming her father for abandoning her half sister.

nd while Kazuha’s feelings may be understandable, I can’t help but think that it really all stems from a misunderstanding on her and her father’s parts, mostly because she thinks her father is abandoning Akira when in fact she is able to be there and see when he does show that he does love her as a father. Kazuha’s anger and hate seems misplaced to a degree because she made a hasty conclusion from faulty information, and immediately believed that their father abandoned Akira just because he doesn’t “show” it publicly.

Maybe we can say that he’s trying to do it discretely, but he’s trying to do it nonetheless. I can’t fault him for that because extramarital affairs are generally frowned upon, but that’s no reason to abandon your own flesh and blood. He shows Akira the same love he shows Kazuha, and it took Kazuha all this time to realize that love itself takes many different forms, and being different doesn’t mean it is absent.

What episode review would be complete without discussing SEX.

Yeah considering the amount of masturbatory fanservice this series has already shown, I guess the creators thought might as well go and do it, which is pretty much bordering the line between ecchi and downright hentai. The fansubs I got obviously got butchered by censors, especially the breast massages and the finger actions. Well you got to give them credit for getting away with what they did, even if it’s likely to leave people more than wanting.

Which means we can expect the same level of controlled gratuity for every arc. For the Sora shippers, you know what that means.

Sex sells, but it doesn’t always save.

So in the end my point still stands that Kazuha’s central story problem felt a bit forced, slightly artificial and rushed. To me the conflict between her and her father felt a bit trite and convenient that could have easily been resolved years ago if he just told her, and if she didn’t simply jump to conclusions about her father and her half sister. Then again, we wouldn’t have a plot if it was that simple, so as the starter arc for the series I could probably forgive it for its weakness.

It just felt rather weak all around. Not terrible, not exactly good, and not bad either. Just absolutely average. I’ll hope that the succeeding arcs are stronger than this.

I think it's a bit more nuanced than this, but perhaps the short duration doesn't make that as obvious as it should be. I suppose the bottom line, though, is that Kazuha's mistrust caused her to distance herself from her father and, at her "teen age", the walls of trust and understanding with her parents are already pretty shaky. (The fact that her father is a politician doesn't help this; how many people trust politicians? ) She also has issues of both pride and a deep need for praise/affirmation that complicated things. She had dug herself a pretty deep hole that was pretty hard to crawl out of and -- truth be told -- I know plenty of adults who get into similar situations and never get over this sort of mistrust (even if the underlying reason is pretty silly). So though it may seem trite and a problem easily solved, I can see pretty easily how Kazuha could find herself in that position. Perhaps a bit more time would have helped flesh this out a bit more, but I think the essentials were covered in Episode 3 (but you have to pay attention to the implication of each conversation).

ARGHH why did they have to go with omnibus format... a linear storyline that connects everybody would be so much more involved imo... sigh.

I've suddenly lost a lot of interest in this now that I know I won't have much to look forward to in terms of story depth and development. I mean shit, look at the schedule for each arc...

3 or 4 ep's for each individual story arc, how much DEPTH can you go into... sigh.

Was REALLY looking forward to seeing some character conflict, drama, resolution, build up... etc. But I guess not.

Whatever, I'll keep watching so that I can at least see the Sora route

Right, and what's the fun in that? Shouldn't that be what OVAs and specials are for?

Looks like a lot of people like this format though

i feel you man, seriously i do, not that many people actually like omnibus format either trust me on that, but seeing how they go with branching routes like this, it might be better to wait until everything is concluded then watch whatever route that you want in the correct order to avoid the akward shift of character's perspective when we go to different route (which what i might ended up doing)

feels like save point system in an eroge walkthrough :P

Haha! That's exactly what I was thinking (save point)!

And that is what I was thinking about too.... just waiting for the series to finish out and then watch just the Sora route. But then I thought about it and I don't think I can really just leave it alone and come back to rewatch without doing a marathon sit through of the whole thing... and how can you resist watching when a new episode comes out?

Also, sorry about the double post there!

Indeed. besides all that, there is also a more "visible" reason for disliking her father in regards to Akira - the later isn't really acknowledged/known as his daughter, is she. Just look at the way she lives - alone, in a shrine, considered an orphan for all intents and purposes. While she indeed didn't know her father cares for Akira in secret, that's as far as it goes really - in the end, she is still a child who got "abandoned" because it was the easiest/less scandalous way out for her father. In the end it's just like a porn magazine one appreciates at night, but hides under the bed during day when people are around

It might be enough for Akira, and one can only praise how understanding she is, but the father hardly gets any brownie points here. He made a mistake, and instead of taking responsibility for it and caring for his child, Akira got stuffed in to a closet and out of sight. He chose preserving his public image and placating his wife over Akira. And while that may be in human nature, and honestly not all too surprising, it isn't really worth any moral brownie points.

Kazuha's mistake was assuming her father didn't care about Akira at all (though the street is two way here, her father had plenty of time to clue her in, it's not like Kazuha found out about Akira yesterday), but that is still only half of the issue in the end. It is obvious the two have communication issues, but i honestly can't fault Kazuha for developing those, considering the situation surrounding Akira.

That aside, i found it pretty amusing when they cut back to the sex scene during the viola performance (poor Kazuha, she is trying so hard and her audience is either asleep or caught up in more interesting recollections ) - i was not expecting that, nor the detail they went in to. Needless to say, the show isn't holding anything back, is it. Seeing what they do with Sora's route is going to be pretty interesting.

That said, Akira is up next - makes sense to have the two sister stories back-to-back, and will be interesting to see if learning details from the other side of perspective is going to shed more light on it.
