Yes, we often see such a "stylistic decision" in anime, it's certainly not uncommon.
However, the one thing that's pointing out that it's *not* a stylistic decision is when Kirino's friends are visiting her, they are remarking about how Kirino and Kyousuke look nothing alike.
This could very well mean that Kirino and Kyousuke are not directly related. Either Krino's mother remarried, and thus Kyousuke and Kirino have different dads, or either of the two have been adopted - with Kirino being more likely here, as she looks much less like her parents with her hair and eye colour.

Hasn't that been pointed out numerous times already in the span of these 4 episodes? That could be more foreshadowing Kyousuke took it as an insult when Ayase stated that they look nothing alike, but I don't think Ayase was trying to insult him in that sense since she doesn't seem the type.

I'd have to say that Kirino might be adopted as well, it certainly would make sense. We'll just have to wait and see how this all develops.

One of the reason why I'm against the change in "that" scene is that, it makes sense for Kyousuke to keep his arm stuck under Kirino's head, but it becomes stupid when his hand is gelled onto the bra. Not to mention why would you apply extra force to your little sister's fall when you specifically called "watch out".

On another note, I still support the theory that Ayase is a stalker, and she somehow managed to track them down at Big sight.
I have'nt read the manga of this series. I am watching Anime in the first.
I guess maybe Ayase is the best girl type of Kyousuke, because Kyousuke naturaly remember Ayase in his bed. Now in Kyousuke's mind, Ayase>Manami>Kirino...
but, his mind will be changed by Kirino's attack to him.
Obviously,Kirino loves Kyousuke. She will worry about Kyousuke+Ayase couple.
Probably, Kirino realizes Ayase is Kyousuke's favourite girl type. So she tried to shut out Kyousuke & Ayase meeting. And now she doesnt know Her brother & Ayase changed their cellphone number
Wow, I am looking forward to Kirino's Action to pretend Ayase's approrch to Kyousuke
Poor Kirino, She is sister of Kyousuke whom she is loving so much!!! It is taboo for her to love Kyousuke...Kirino is so disadvantage in this battle of love...
But Go Kirino! If you will not get your Brother's love, you can get the best brother/sister relation with Kyousuke.

While I can see where you are going, first we should look forward to Ayase's appearance and interactions with Kirino and Kyousuke to begin with.
It's like almost you skipped the coming episode and continued right away. XD

Its only my guess of coming episodes....
As you say, in the first I will look forward to Ayase's appearance and interactions with Kirino and Kyousuke to begin with.

Well, I also support this pairing the most, actually. They haven't really interact much, but when they do they seem to get along just fine and help each other. My favorite part is in last episode in Comiket, when they Kirino and Kuroneko arguing in full tsundere mode, both of them look amused like parents seeing their children bicker. I don't want this to go the incest route, so definitely not KirinoxKyousuke, and although Ayase seems nice after analyzing the ED lyrics I can't shake the suspicion that she's yuri, so that's a no go as well. Manami is fine though, but she definitely needs to get more screentime to charm Kyousuke and the rest of the audience.

-The lifestyle gaps of certain siblings cause them to be protective of their lifestyle. Examples include episode 1, with Kirino getting uncomfortable with Kyousuke looking around her room. Sharing lifestyles makes you feel vulnerable, something that, when you've been on cold terms for so long, is going to receive backlash.

-Certain siblings do not want to LOSE. They don't want to be WRONG, especially when proven wrong by their siblings. It's just natural sibling rivalry to me. Whenever my brother happens to be right about something, it annoys me. Thus, it feels natural for me when Kirino makes these rash decisions such as not being (initially) empathetic when Kyousuke goes to comfort her and when Kirino doesn't listen about the "box".

-Certain siblings do not show the same face to their friends as they show to their siblings. Due to the age gap, of course you'll feel more friendly and respectful to the peers you can see when you want to see them, rather than the brother you have to see whether you like it or not. I TOTALLY get it when I don't want my siblings talking to my friends: I think that he's just annoying them for attention. Same with Kirino: she doesn't want Kyousuke to interact with her friends because she thinks it'll annoy them or creep them out.

-Certain siblings get annoyed when people compliment their siblings, ESPECIALLY if they're untrue. In my case, when people say my brother is cute and so nice...I have to laugh and roll my eyes, cause I know that's not true in my household. I understand it when Kirino has a negative reception to compliments towards Kyousuke. However, I also get when she gets discomforted when he's downright insulted as well. It just feels AWKWARD when someone else is insulting someone in your family other than YOU.

-Certain siblings have been on standoff for so long that the mere presence of the sibling or having to be around them is just...annoying. I for one do not like my brother (presently, hopefully he gets better as he matures ) simply because I've gotten sick of his actions, that even when he isn't doing something bad, it just comes as a reaction to me to perceive it as negative. Although it might not be the same case in Oreimo, it's still the same concept: certain siblings just don't click until something drastic changes.

Notice how I use "certain", because not all cases of siblings in the real world are bickering. But upon seeing these comments on this board, I think the direction of the anime is working really well: illustrating just how annoying certain siblings can be, and making the audience feel that way.
Zanibas' post needs more love but got pushed aside That was a good read. I personally didn't mind Kirino's foul mouth cause Kyousuke was handling the verbal abuse so well. I also don't have a sister but I can understand some of the problems siblings have with each other. A lot of stuff said really made me nod in agreement. I'd side with Kyousuke if it's about sibling tension unless we get to see a good reason why Kirino thinks so poorly of him.

As long as Kirino doesn't go beyond complaining at Kyousuke, I won't really mind unless it's done too much. It would be worse if Kyousuke was suffering from embarrassing or painful situations every time Kirino was being mean but so far it hasn't been that bad.

This show is very disturbingly unrealistic. No, not how Kyosuke fall on top of Kirino in very embarassing situation but rather how fast Kirino forgive her brother afterwards. Maybe she enjoyed it a little.

True... I would like to know why Kirino isolated Kyousuke until he found out about her Otakuness, but Kirino bringing Kyousuke along with her "most" of the time does show good signs of her not actually thinking poorly of him (unless it involves him being bad at fighting games )

It is because they are in "cold war"? I would rather see some awkward interactions, no downright hatred and insults.
Even Kyousuke states they didn't interact much, nor he could talk with her face to face for -years-. Acting like strangers isn't the same as waging sibling love/hate interactions at all.

While I would understand if Kirino had hard time to choose her words wisely, going trigger happy on the verbal abuse etc is arguably not justified by the so called "cold war". I don't think anyone expect Kirino to be all considerate or sweet towards Kyousuke. But no matter what, she just pushes him doing things without considering his own take, nor she gives him credit or time to explain himself.
Point taken. I admit that her abuse is pretty extreme but I recall a few times where I was a COMPLETE brat to my older sibling (similar to Kirino). The only difference between our situation would be that my siblings didn't have the patience of a saint like Kyousuke. You know what happens next...

Zanibas's negative perception of his brother is exactly like mine. Though, I'm starting to be more tolerant of what my brother does these days... Must be the constant playing of League of Legends lately. When my older brother tells me various things, it either rubs off on me in a bad way or it just plain annoys me. The sibling relationship is more prominent with my older sister at the very least. I would prefer to have the greatest sibling relationship ever but not going to happen.

You also have to remember that Kirino's public and private self are also "nothing alike" :P

You must not have a sister and probably not any closely observed siblings .... reality can be pretty complicated (and no, if you're not attracted to each other then this isn't that big a deal as brothers and sisters often have quite a bit of non-sexual contact - the issue is just mostly that it was embarrassing). I've watched brothers and sisters wrestle, grapple, undo clothing, and otherwise torture each other in many ways.

The show sometimes makes it rather clear that it's almost meant for people who have similar sibling relationships (like me), since they're the ones who are likely to relate to their situation. The show doesn't explain why and why, because it more or less expects you to connect the dots yourself.

I have the feeling that Ayase's "secret" will turn out to be a boring one at this rate, she did mention that she have to work in the morning (must be the day of the Comiket) so maybe she simply has just been there as a model or a mangaka...

@MeoTwister5: agree there about the target audience

I will say if we find that the two are not actually related (see posts further up) it'll fire up speculation... but if the brother and sister KNOW their origins and they were raised together, the science says the possibility is almost non-existent they'd be attracted to each other (Westermarck Effect)

^On the westersomething effect, would it still apply if they've been acting like strangers around each other? Also, Kirino might have inadvertently brainwashed herself to subconsciously accept incest..... and now doing the same to Kyousuke via all her eroge.

I wonder, if it turns out they're unrelated, would the fans hoping for a wincest ending lose interest, since it's no longer taboo?

I was thinking about that too about the westersomething effect. For the past five years the only time they share the same space is when they have a meal or when Kyousuke gets himself a drink. I mean its clear that Kirino has "some sort" of attachment to Kyousuke, I mean if not the series just wouldn't make sense. We'll just have to see what kind of attachment it is. Whether its winest or just siblings being siblings.

As for them not actually being related would fire up such a big storm it'll destroy the series. I mean the whole series base is on their sibling relationship.

Upon further reading, it seems the wester-- effect happens at a critical period between birth and six years of age, so based on that one family photo of them in ep 3, and that they were probably close as kids, I'd say they do have the 'anti-sexual attraction imprinting'.

It does seem like flirting with wincest is one of the main hooks of this series, so I can see that backlash happening

I suppose I can take wincest if approached in a not-entirely serious/realistic manner, but when done seriously ala Koi Kaze... yuck.

I love my saya no uta, does that mean I'll kill people?

Kirino plays those games from the viewpoint of the oniisan, she likes little girls, not the other way round.

When the author is teasing the audience with social commentary, it's fun.
not to mention it gives me a legitimate reason to have a debate with the ignorants.

But I love Koi Kaze, I guess when I watch anime I at least hope for some sort of connection with reality since I want to see it in a light that I can relate to. But seeing how the series has been written I don't see it going all serious on us like Koi but hey you never know.
