Nope, it has nothing to do with mobile suit technology. Basically, it's a box that was supposed to be unveiled at the Laplace ship by Ricardo Marcenas, the first prime minister of the Federation, to commemorate the start of the Universal Century. The box apparently stated that the Federation would grant all future space colonies self-determination, so it somewhat justifies what Zeon had been doing all the while.

The ensuing terrorist attack, from what I vaguely remember, was ordered by conservative factions in the Federation who were opposed to Ricardo's liberal policy. This would prevent the box from ever being revealed and also get rid of Ricardo, who they might have thought would be a stumbling block to their own ambitions.

The terrorist attack succeeded, but the conservatives betrayed the terrorists by detonating a bomb on their mothership, as seen from ep 1 of Gundam Unicorn. However, Syam Vist alone survived and took hold of the Laplace's Box, which miraculously emerged unscathed.

That is precisely why ECOAS is doing their utmost to stop the opening of the box. If the box falls into the control of Neo Zeon, the legitimacy of the Federation would cease.

Even so, would the Federation accept that?

The Earth Federation is still around in UC123. That tells you nobody gives a damn anymore. Anyone will have enough of the nonsense after 4 wars in 15 years.

Z Gundam didn't get retconned after the release of 0083, not even in the movies.

It still follows the same outline as in the TV series and the design of the movie's 0087 MS didn't take on any shades of what is shown in 0083.

Yes well it's a translation of Yaz's design and in any case I don't even know what Deacon is on about this particular time. His chin looks about the same size as any average male characters in the show and I can't even see any significant difference between the novel version and the anime version to be honest.

I've only this to add....

Out of all the characters, Marida recieve the most outrageous makeover.

Just compare her current punk rocker look and the original lineart if you will.

I've enjoyed the last 2 episodes, mostly for the spectacle. Having not read the novel, I have a feeling this series will just continue the Zeon apologia that permeates recent Gundam outings. Ah, I miss the days when Zeon really were just Space Nazis (snazzy uniforms!) and the EF were incompetent idiots but still the group you root for. That seems to have turned 180 now.

I just finished watching it.

The battle was amazing and negotiation scene was entertaining too. Otto's mini tantrum was pretty funny but you could certainly sympathize with him. Angelo's reverence for Full Frontal and overall rage got old pretty quickly but at least his Zulu looks great as does the long rifle.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Banagher gets back to the Feddies.
