ab big big thanks for translating everything o.o I could only understand the whole drama cd cuz of u, thank you!!!!

@ pdshingo

it's amazing how much u can tell about her character.
I've read ur post and know I rly do have a different view about Hiromi.
To me, she was the kinda helpless girl, always thinkg about others, not showing her own desires. She was just as weak to me as u said that she isn't.

But now, i think I can understand her role and her character better ... maybe I should rewatch True Tears with the new gained knowledge oO

Hiromi was always my fav character and after reading ur post, she'll still stay at that position

great job indeed

Gave it a 9/10.
Mainly because i'm backed up on anime and so usually im rushing things. But after i got into the first episode , the priority of me watching this anime was wayy above any other. I enjoyed every minute of it and i honestly think its probably one of the most enjoyable animes to watch. I think that we should have had a little more spotlight for Ai-chan though , she also had the 'better' kiss with Shinichiro than all the others , in my opinion of course.
Shes definitely one of my favorites from this anime.

I'd have preferred if they left her out entirely and focused on the other two.

I really liked Ai. I kinda felt sorry for her because Shin basically pushed her into a relationship with Miyokichi when she really liked Shin.

I felt really bad for Miyokichi though. That is a terrible situation to be in. At least they started from square one again, this time on their own terms.

He didn't push her into it. All she had to do was say no and it would have been the end of it. But..she just couldn't. And then she continued to go out with the guy all the while liking Shinichirou.

Yeah, I felt bad for the guy too. You gotta hand it to him for giving her another chance and all. She was the most mature of them all.

That whole development proved that Ai did develop some real feelings for him during their time together. She wouldn't have reached out to him otherwise.

And yes, props to him for not holding a grudge. But Ai deserves partial credit for actually making that call and giving him a fair shot this time. That scene was probably one of my favorites.

Actually,I think that Ai's role was vital in this series. If it wasn't for her involvement between Shinichiro and Miyokichi, the show probably would've played out far more differently, if not less believable. She's really an important character even if people can't understand why.

Here's a post I quoted a from member here at animesuki that explains what I wrote

Spoiler for spolier:

I also think that Aiko was more of a symbolic heroine and she was there to bring out the best in Shin and Nobuse...

That does make very good sense, and I would have to agree. They provided good contrast. Who wrote that? You should give them due credit.

Oh, and I am not taking back what I said mainly because I want more Shinichirou x Hiromi time.

Does anyone know the title of the music that was playing during the kiss scene and the subsequent AikoXNobuse scene in episode 11

Initially I had dropped the series due to boredom, but having picked up Hana Saku Iroha and having one thousand and one references mentioned by people to it, I had to go back and take a look.

This particular show contains two notable entities in my mind: Mari Okada and PA works, who are responsible for Iroha as well. Mari Okada seems to be on some kind of mission as of late to dominate in terms of writing, and much like Hiromi, won't be denied. So I figured that I really should see more of her work.

And there's PA works; they make pretty backgrounds and questionable decisions. But that's not always a bad thing; it's better than what I could say about some other studios (*cough*) Deen.

Anyhow, True Tears has proven to be a good watch, and if I could say nothing else about it, I would say it stands out on its own, with a very heavy focus on atmosphere featuring great visuals and audio. Kinda like Yosuga no Sora, but with much more thought and no porn.

Visuals: 10
OMFGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG PRETTY! KyoAni GTFO

It's an understatement to say that True Tears looks good. Angel Beats, done by the same people looks good, but there's something that True Tears has that makes the aesthetics perfect as possible. The character designs are great; none of those terrible proportions with ginormous breasts, faces with dinner plate eyes, nor ridiculous deformed lolis. It looks just right and I'd consider a standard where moe aesthetics should be judged-- which no surprise it was unrivaled until Hana Iro came along.

It's not just about animation quality, it's about how well these elements mesh. Oh, and the leaves are pretty too.

The backgrounds are not only awe inspiring, but also appropriate for the situation. Beautiful sakura trees, coastlines with rushing waves, and of course tons of snow for sad girls to be sad in almost makes me feel they made imaginary sets for actors to act in

Audio: 8
In terms of music and voice acting, True Tears is probably not as great in this area as visuals, but still very solid. The BGM is often suitable in most cases, though I always felt like I should have noticed it a bit more. The one exception is Noe's theme, and much like Noe herself, is something you can't ignore.

The OP/ED won't hit my favorites any time soon, but they do their job. Reflectica helps start the episode off; the ED, Sekai no Namida, is the one I prefer. It's a nice calming song sung by Aira Yuki, which I know better as the person that sang the Sola song.

The Voice acting is adequate for the most part. Nothing really stands out, except for Noe's voice, which again, of course stands out.

Story: 7
True Tears has a solid plot which is fairly logical (a rarity in anime), but I don't think it pushed its advantages very well, hence my dropping of the series midway through and having to pick it back up.

The main problem was that it opened up a lot of potential storylines, some with incredible symbolism and setup. The chicken and tears motif, as well as Shinchiro going through his drawings could make for some great stuff. Hiromi's conflict with Shin's mother would provide another level of drama. I would say the first 3 or so episodes were excellent in setting all of that up but....

You only have 13 episodes.

The story seemed to have a fondness for starting plotlines that went nowhere. Aiko decides to kiss Shin and fall in love with him, and yea she liked him all along. But really, this goes on for about 10 minutes max, and what does this have to do with the plot at large? Well, maybe Miyokchi's relationship with her would be further developed. Lol no, of course. Noe's brother is a siscon? What? Once again, this kinda gets brought up and hits a dead end. And of course Hiromi's relationship with her mother, another source of potential conflict gets cancelled out just like that and seems to just give them an excuse of "Hey, we're not related, we can fuck now!"

And it really shows, since come episode 10 Hiromi's ready to jump Shin's bones, and knock poor Noe out of the way. If the early and mid episodes were the Noe show, the later episodes were Hiromi's show.

Now, despite this, one cannot deny that even though I didn't feel these plot elements worked very well, the writing must be lauded for being very realistic. The events have a certain kind of complexity, that if you drew an outline, you could immediately say "hey, this could totally happen in real life"

And the chicken really did have its moments. I mean after all, Noe forcing the chicken to fly is no different from forcing a romance that can't happen into working. Throughout the story, we have characters being dishonest to themselves, even going for these tag team relationships in order to run away from the problem.

The distress caused to the characters was almost as bad as a chicken falling from a high place. In the end True Tears was about following your own feelings, and your own will, and to not be dictated by the goals of others, no matter what intentions they would be.

But despite all of this, I felt the ending was kinda underwhelming. Shin's like lol I love Hiromi, Noe's like K, sadly, then it kinda just ends...

I'm sure with 2 cours the story would have been great; right now it came across as an outline which happens to beat out many a random plotline in anime though.

Fortunately, despite my dislike of the overall script, PA works' method of storytelling worked very well, with a touch of subtle humor every now and then and clues everywhere that would keep you guessing as you watched.

Characters: 7
"You're not one to lose"
"Of course, I'm an athlete."

It's pretty bizzare, but I ended up somehow liking Hiromi more at the end, possibly thanks to the focus to her at the end. Hiromi has been through a ton of crap, being treated like an outsider in her own home, and making her feel like she doesn't belong anywhere else. Yet, somehow she manages to make friends well and constantly strive to achieve and win. Once she realized she could pursue her love with Shinchiro, it really helped liberate her from her conflicts and wow... she's certainly quick to the chase.

She won't be denied; Hiromi is a winner in everything she does, that's definitely the mark of a champion.

Shinchiro... well he's an ok guy. I'm not sure why everyone's falling in love with him save for Hiromi, but he does behave in a realistic fashion. However, past episode 9 I felt increasingly disconnected from him and couldn't understand or empathize with his decisions. He's not the most exciting guy, but he's not stupid or offensive or anything. Quite an accomplishment in this genre!

Noe is arguably the most notable character, as her presence drives the plot. She easily captures the show with her quirky personality, and comes off as rather moe. There's no predicting what the hell she'll do, and her urge to help others fly comes off as endearing. Her interactions with Shinchiro are also hillarious and help drive the first part of the show. "May misfortune befall you". Noe's also a pretty strong person, as she gave away her tears.

Unfortunately, like Shin, I got extremely disconnected from her after episode 9. I mean she just got utterly ridiclous, maybe that's her way of being depressed. But I couldn't help but think her brain got swapped with the chicken in some scenes, especially when she gets injured (then again, chickens don't go emo). I mean sure, romance is srs bzness in anime, but it just seemed a bit overwrought.

Noe does kinda redeem herself in episode 13 with her calmly looking off all that bullshit that happened to her, but it's kinda too late, and it's almost like the writers' hate her. The plot hates her. She deserves better.

The side characters kinda do their work; nothing bad, nothing exceptional. Except Noe's brother is creepy. Meh...

Anyhow, good characters, but the lack of closure hurt my attachment to them.

Enjoyment: 7
True Tears has a ton of quirkiness for one to enjoy. It's obvious that much effort was put into this work, and some of the extra touches make me think I'm watching art in motion at times. But it's just that the anime never really captured me emotionally that kind of cut down on the enjoyment; maybe I just didn't buy the drama of these girls liking this one guy. Then again, I was never a fan of romantic conflict melodrama (Even something like that in Clannad was pretty annoying me), so it may just not be my cup of tea.

But on my rewatch, it kept me watching, proving that those extra touches really helped.

Overall: 7.5
(How did this sell so much less than Angel Beats? >.> Bastards. )
Despite it's flaws, it was a pleasure to watch. I'm sure people more into drama enjoyed it more, and even as someone who normally doesn't like it, I can appreciate some of the beauty it put forth. It doesn't score enough to reach an 8, but I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for some romance and atmosphere.

Because Noe gave her tears away... to her fans. j/k

I'm glad you finished watching it! It's one of my favorite anime series and my favorite romance anime.

And I really enjoy the OP/ED. They have been on my playlist since I first watched this a few years ago.

Yea, both songs have been frequenting my playlists as well. The visual sequences also help a lot. But anything visually about this anime just works, lol.

Well, I'm a bit disappointed that your take on Noe (and Noe vs. Hiromi) seems to have changed by the end of the anime, Archon.

Personally, I felt that Noe's reaction to what happened to her in the final few episodes was believable, and very understandable given how horrible the plot is to her.

Aside from that, though, your review of True Tears is a very good one. So, aside from some shipping conflicts, I agree with your review, and you make some good points there.

I just didn't buy that Noe would engage in such self destructive behavior for that one guy; it's just hard for me to grasp all these girls liking him so much. So yea, I feel that the story kinda crowbarred Noe out of contention. >.>

The worst barrier to me to Shin/Noe is that I don't really understand his feelings. It seems he's been desiring Hiromi forever, and that's what ended up happening. Noe became an afterthought, and man that's pretty annoying.

The other problem was that the show heavily pushed Hiromi at the end, and thus Noe's character development didn't end up as strong.

But truth be told, it's kinda why parts of the final arc left me empty.

I understand.

I think that what ultimately pushed Noe completely over the deep end was Jun confessing his romantic feelings to her.

At that point, Noe probably felt like she had nowhere left to turn. She didn't seem to have many female friends at the time, and the guy she had a crush on (and was dating) essentially dumped her.

Now, I think that if Jun hadn't confessed romantic feelings to Noe that Noe would have turned to Jun for emotional support. But now she probably feels like she can't do that, as it would be incredibly awkward given Jun's confession...

So being in great emotional pain, and completely isolated from any other human being that could help her through this, Noe simply snaps, I think...

Hence, what I mean by the crowbar; and yes I found that whole Jun subplot to be -_-. It's there to make her more miserable.

I still think Noe is prob better in bed, though...

But it's ok. In a far future, Noe reincarnated as Ohana, only to find that the plot still hates her.
