Defying the Laws of Limits
-- Yui, having lost the cassette, makes things a little bit harder for the gang, especially as if they fail this mission, the whole Lucky Star universe (the home dimension of Konata) will collapse, causing the whole InterD Brigade to dissappear. Therefore, Yui and the others set about to memorize and practice the insert song Gravity in a mere 20 minutes. Asuza had some doubts, but just in the nick of time they were able to master the song by using Haruhi-like powers, much to the suprise of Konata, who was revealed to be monitoring her home dimension and two mysterious espers who where watching HTT from afar, and finish the mission successfully.

Just watched 1994's Speed (starring Keanu Reeves) the other day, and man, I could just picture Ritsu as Jack and Mio as Harry. Kinda tempts me to try and play this out in my fan fic, with Mio going, "Guts'll get you so far, then they'll get you killed," and the terrorist later telling Ritsu, after Mio is presumed dead, "Ritsu, we both know (Mio) was the brains of your particular operation. You can't beat me (now)!"

Azusa looked out the classroom window. She missed her sempais and hoped they would come back, at least for the live performance. But she wasn't sure there would even be a performance.

They had to gather at least four members in a week or the light music club would be abolished, and there were only three days left.

So far three members: Jun the bassist, Ui the keyboardist and herself, the guitarist.

And since it took a year to get a new member last time, who knows if the club would stay.

~*after school*~

"When's Ui coming?", Jun asked Azusa in the clubroom.

"I hope she comes in with a member…", Azusa mumbled while looking at the club mascot, Ton-chan the turtle.

"Yeah… right now, the two of us are hopeless…", Jun chuckled.

Suddenly Ui burst in with a piece of paper in her hand. "ONEE-CHAN MAILED ME!", she had a bright smile on her face.

"Whoah, calm down, Ui, you look like you won American Idol!", Azusa said.

"Whe… Well, the members of the computer club let me check my mail in their clubroom and I saw Onee-chan mailed! Here, I printed it out!", she huffed.

It said:

"Ui, Azu-nyan, Jun-chan,

We just got in our dorm. Mugi-chan's my roomie and Mio is Ritsu's.

Our rooms look really cool! Though my room at home had more space.

"Are you all doing alright?" Ricchan asks.

"Did you get any new members?" Mio-chan asks.

"How's Ton-chan?" Mugi-chan asks.

Well, I can't use the computer for too long so goodbye! 3

"Yeah! Yui-sempai gets to be roommates with foodmaster-Mugi!", Jun said.

"Not THAT, stupid! The new member!", Azusa said.

Jun blushed, but laughed it off. Ui then realized something.

"Tsumugi-san didn't say what instrument she plays!"

They all agreed she might play the drums. That's when somebody knocked on the door.

"Come in!", they all chanted.

A pink-haired girl entered the room. She had a red ribbon on, so she was their age, though she was very tall.

"M-my name is Akane Miura…", she stuttered, "This is the light music club, am I right?"

They all nodded. Azusa's eyes widened.

"A-Akane Miura? Mugi-sempai's friend?", Azusa shouted.

"Yes… I play the tuba…", Akane murmured.

"The tuba… huh", Jun said.

Azusa and the others got a new member. But she plays… the tuba?

"So… no drum-playing talent? Not even symbols?", Jun asked Akane.

"Jun!", Azusa hit Jun with her elbow.

"I'm sorry if you had expected a drummer… am I… not qualified to be a member?", tears nearly filled Akane's eyes.

"Why, you're most qualified, Miura-chan! Tea?", Ui offered her a mug of ice tea.

Akane started smiling radiantly, "I llll….love tea!", she took the mug and drank as fast as possible. Her eyes started tearing up again.

~*two minutes later*~

Akane laid down on the sofa. Her whole face was red and her nose was runny.

"Gosh, if you're allergic to ice tea, why'd you drink it?", Ui asked as she put a wet towel on Akane's forehead.

"Is… yummy… AH-CHOO!", Akane sneezed as the door flew open.

It was Sawako-Sensei. She asked, "Is she a new member? What's wrong with her?"

Akane sniffled, "No biggie, Teacher. I have many allergies, so I often get sick."

Sawako's face lit up. "Pink, long hair… polite… often sick… tall…", she thought.

It was silent for a while, till Sawako pulled out a maid outfit and exclaimed, "Wanna wear it, new member?"

Azusa stood in front of Akane and shouted, "Yamanaka-Sensei, no way Miura-san will wear-"

"I would love to wear it!", Akane smiled. She seemed perfectly healthy now.

Jun and Azusa sweatdropped. She really wanted to wear it…?

She soon got out of the closet in the outfit. It really suited her.

"How cute!", shouted Sawako, "You look perfect… new member!"

"Please don't call me 'new member', my name is Akane Miura", she said.

~*they all sit down at the table*~

"Milk tea for Sawa-Sensei, ice tea for Azusa-chan, a muffin for Jun-chan and strawberry cake for Akane-chan", Ui said as she served the food.

"You're already calling me Akane-chan, but I don't know any of your names!", giggled Akane.

"I'm Jun the bassist, the black-haired one is Azusa the guitarist and club leader, the light brown-haired one is Ui the keyboardist and the teacher is Sawako the manager", Jun said.

"And the vocalist?", asked Akane.

Nobody answered. That wasn't even decided. Jun looked at Azusa. Azusa shook her hands saying, "Not me! I'm already club leader!"

Akane shook her head and said, "I won't."

Ui raised her hand with her usual smile asking, "May I try?"

Ui just offered to be the vocalist.

"Sure, but… does it work as a keyboardist?", Azusa asked, "Since usually the guitarists or bassists sing…"

"Oh! Yes, yes it does!", Ui pulled out what seemed to be a guitar case. She opened the case and inside was a KEYtar.

"That looks cool! How'd you afford this?", Jun asked in amazement.

"Tsumugi-san gave hers to me!", Ui smiled.

"Well, then, should we practice?", Akane said.

They played Fuwa Fuwa Time after finding out what notes the tuba should play. Surprisingly, it didn't sound bad without the drums.

Ui's cellphone rang once they got to the chorus for the second time. Her phone's screen said Onee-chan. Yui had called her!

Ui exitedly put her sister on loudspeaker. "Onee-chan! Hiiii~!", Ui called out.

"Ah, guys, Ui picked up her phone!" Yui said on the other line.

"Hey, guys!", the HTT chanted through the phone.

"Hi, Yui-chan!", Sawako said.

"Oh, Yui-sempai, this is Akane Miura, our new tuba player!", Azusa said.

"Good day, Yui-san!", Akane said.

"Ah, Yui-sempai, your sister is our new vocalist!", said Jun.

"Ah~! They grow up so fast!", Yui said like a mother.

"Well, you won't ever grow up!", Ritsu said and they heard laughing in the background.

"Hahah, how are you, Aka-chan?", Tsumugi asked, calming herself down from laughing.

"I'm okay, but I just had tea!", said Akane and heard Mugi giggle.

They heard somebody in the background shouting, "Hirasawa-san! Akiyama-san! Kotobuki-san! Tainaka-san! No phoning in class! Geez, give it to m-"

Everybody sweatdropped. "They… were phoning in class?"

"I couldn't expect more from Onee-chan!", Ui giggled.

They all started laughing.

This will be my first time presenting an extended example of my writing style, outside of some eccentric capsule reviews, to this or any forum in a long time. I've been away from the fanfiction scene for years. Not the K-ON! fanfiction scene, fanfiction in general. The ground covered in this story has probably been covered several times before by others, but every writer brings their own flair to what they write. Thus, this contains several of my favorite storytelling elements along with an attempt to maintain the feel of the show, even as the content becomes unusual.

It's a short little work I wrote over late November and all of December. "Short" meaning "almost 48,000 words", but my definition of short may vary from yours. It's probably not my best writing, but I gave it my all.

A "side character" from K-ON!! anime, Shima Chizuru, discovered HTT's secret. What to do? One thing: Recruitment! Konata, however, saw the opportunity to declare a successor to her, whatever that means. =P Thier (HTT + Shima) next mission is...
The World God Only Knows.

In there, a supposed mission to find Kanon Nakagawa, who's supposed to be missing, became a trap mission with his mirror world complementary, a Special Agent. While the motive behind this fake-out wasn't totally revealed, everything worked out as the real Kanon appeared from a helicopter and went to the recording company. (That explains why Kanon wasn't fired yet despite being very near late from the recording from singing in front of Keima) But sadly, mirror world Kanon got away. With no other options, they went back to HQ with a somewhat pleasant surprise. Asuna-chan! With that, Konata sent HTT and Shima (the one Guiding them would be Negima?!'s Asuna-chan) to the Negima!? world for training with Negima!'s Negi Springfield.

Now to think of Yui's partner card. XD

Perhaps the manga being revitalized inspired me. Perhaps I felt that without sticking to the structure of the source material exactly, my story would feel incomplete. Chapter 12 was, indeed, the end of the narrative, but Countermelody! has gained some extra material in the interim.

The small door opened with a loud creak that was very unexpected seeing from its size. Mio cringed at the loud noise it made as she entered the room; her grand entrance had successfully taken all the attention of the people inside it.

“Ah, early as always Akiyama-san,” the familiar doctor, Mizushima Akiko-sensei, smiled at her old patient warmly “Please, sit down” the doctor motioned on the chair in front of her desk.

Mio only let out a smile as she sat down on the offered chair, not exactly knowing how to reply to the doctor’s first statement.

‘I’m early because one of my students drove me here at 220 km/hour?’

No, that would be too much trouble.

A smile was all it worth, the math teacher thought, as she eyed Mizushima-sensei who was reading the sheets of paper a passing nurse gave her. She knew it was procedure, and that she’d done this several times before, but this part of a doctor’s appointments was one of the most nerve-wracking of the entire session. Mio couldn’t help but fidget as the air filled with suspense on what would Mizushima-sensei be doing to her today.

That sounded so wrong.

The Math teacher let out a sigh.

“So,” the brown-haired doctor asked as she set down the heaps of paper down with a shuffle “what is the problem today?”

“It’s…an old problem,” Mio couldn’t help but feel a bit pissed that she had to explain about it all over again when she had told a nurse several days ago when she made the appointment “about…you know.”

The doctor seemed to catch onto her words and immediately told her to lie on the…operating table? She didn’t really know the exact wording and didn’t really care. Her bag was placed on her seat and she took off her shoes before laying on the less-than comfortable mat upon the table. The mat sagged in complain, and Mio had a sudden urge to go home and start dieting.

Mizushima-sensei then came forward with both hands wrapped in sterile rubber gloves and brought several assortments with her which were placed in a metal plate. Mio didn’t really get a clear look at them, but she thought she saw balls of cottons and a bottle of alcohol that let out a strong smell that never failed to make her nervous.

The doctor saw her tensed and let out a small laugh “I thought you’d get used to it by now.”

“To be frank, I don’t think I would get used to seeing my own blood.”

“Then don’t look.” But the words were said full of humor. Mizushima-sensei knew that the younger girl would always unfailingly manage to take a peek at the treatment and passed out immediately afterwards. It created a panic the first few times she was here, but as time goes by, it became a habit and the two of them learn to laugh it off. Only the doctor though, Mio wouldn’t stop looking mortified when being told she fainted, again, for the umpteenth time after treatment.
Without being told to, the math teacher pushed up her purple shirt until above her chest, breathing deeply all the while. She felt the doctor’s hands traced upon the one thing that was troubling her, and her breath hitched when she saw the doctor frowned. The plaster was opened slowly, and Mizushima-sensei’s eyes widened.

“It’s bleeding.”

Mio could only nod weakly in response as sterilized cotton began to dab on the wound. She hissed at the slight pain, even though the alcohol cools it down a bit.

“When did it start bleeding?”

“A few weeks ago. I thought it would stop after a while,” Mio took another deep breath “but it never did. It’s bleeding like crazy whenever I had to change the bandage.”

The cotton was replaced, this one with more amount of alcohol “And the plaster?”

“Just changed it this morning. It took a while to clean up the blood.” The math teacher’s face paled as she remembered the event. She suppressed a shiver at the memory.

The doctor let out a small smile and turned around, asking something to the watching nurse “we have to bandage it, and this time the bandage will be on for a while,” Mizushima-sensei turned back to her pale patient with new cottons “for now, we’ll use the cottons to seep out the dirty blood and closed it with bandage once the blood thins enough.”

Mio tried to keep her expression under control.

She failed.

“But this is very strange,” the doctor said several moments later when she had finished bandaging up her patient’s middle. Said patient was now sitting quietly across from her with a slightly pale face yet listening to her every word intently “wounds like this shouldn’t be bleeding after it became a scar.”

It was a statement, and Mio could only give a faint shrug as she nursed the coffee the doctor had given after she woke up. Yes, the math teacher had fainted during treatment once again.

She could feel her doctor’s eyes quietly scrutinizing her, and Mio felt it’s better just to stay quiet and pretend as though she didn’t notice. She wouldn’t want to faint again so soon after she’d woken up, and the expression on the doctor’s face right now was as though she was thinking about how to break a bad news to her, the ever fragile girl she was.
Mio decided took the plunge, the suspense was killing her “you know the reason, right?”

“It’s psychological.”

She almost lost her grip on her Styrofoam cup “excuse me?”

“The most possible reason is psychological,” the doctor leaned back on her more comfortable chair to lessen the suspense of the revealing “we have seen all kinds of wounds that would re-open after times, and that would most likely apply to post-operation wounds. Yours, however, was not from an operation, and left a scar, which is a new layer of skin upon a deep wound. And yet this wound kept bleeding at certain times, and stopped randomly on different intervals. The last time it bled was a year ago, right?”

Mio nodded silently, she was almost afraid to ask “and…?”

“Then there’s a probability that this wound is linked psychologically to you, or in other words, to your trauma.”
The clammy hands upon the cup tightened, and Mizushima-sensei’s tone became gentler when she saw the gesture.
“I can help you set an appointment for therapy. Not about the wound, no…but, about…” she trailed off hesitantly, but Mio knew clearly what she meant.

The ghosts of touches that lingered on her body. The violent grips. The shackles that bound her wrist…and that cold hand that gripped her heart.

The familiar, overwhelming fear.

Her lungs tightened and she could almost see it again, in front of her.

As though she was pulled back to the past without her consent.

“Mio-chan!”

Mizushima-sensei’s voice snapped her out of the trance, and Mio found herself blinking rapidly at concerned pair of brown eyes.

“Y-yes?”

“Ah— about the therapy…” The doctor had forgotten to be professional and fallen back to old habit which she had abandoned once Mio had reached her twenties. That one moment where Mio almost lost it, was enough to awaken her motherly instinct towards this patient who she had known since she was small.

The math teacher gave a small cough to clear her mind and to give time to recollect herself.

“I- I have to refuse. I’m quite busy this year, as I was given the task to teach High School seniors,” she was rambling and the woman across from her knows it. Mio took a deep shuddering breath “and…I wanted to get through this on my own. Please.”

Mizushima-sensei was torn between exasperation and understanding. She understood, because if she was in Mio’s position she might feel the same and yet exasperated at how stubborn her patient was. Shaking her head, the doctor let out a defeated sigh.

“It’s your choice. You just go out there, and do your best and I’ll be here to take care of the rest.”

There was nothing left to do, and Mio let out a smile as she stood up to leave. They exchanged thanks and Mizushima-sensei made her promise she’d call earlier if anything like this happened the next time and not wait until weeks after.
Well, hopefully this won’t happen again.

Something came to mind when she almost went out the door “Sensei?” she doubled back to the doctor, who was half way re-arranging her desk. She was met with raised eyebrows and continued.

“How do you…get over a trauma, exactly?”

The older woman had a thoughtful look on her face and she tapped her nose thoughtfully.

“Well…I don’t know for sure...but I think…you have to move forward to get over them.”

Mio frowned “…move forward?” her obsidian eyes looked questioningly at her doctor, who stared straightly back at her.

“Move forward.”

Mizushima-sensei’s eyes were telling her to do something. Problem was…Mio have absolutely no idea what.

The doctor was the first to break eye contact as she let out a small laugh and break the tension.

“Well…you’re still young, so it might be easy.”

Huh?

“Good day, Akiyama-san.”

A dismissive tone and a mysterious smile. As expected of a doctor to leave the patient with a cryptic advice which said patient would have a hell of a time trying to understand. But Mizushima-sensei had done so many things for her that was even out of her way as a doctor. She had trusted Mio to take care of herself after that incident when no one would and had kindly let her off what would have been a month worth of hospitalization.

Mizushima-sensei trusted her and it would be almost insulting if Mio would not do the same.

And so there was nothing left to do.

“Good day, sensei.”

The small white door closed with a snap.

Hospitals were one of the places Mio didn’t really enjoy visiting, but today’s visit were out of necessity so she had to bear it. Holding in her breath so the strong waft of alcohol didn’t reach her nose, the math teacher weaved in through the crowd expertly. Her eyes set on the hospital entrance, and her mind was focusing solely on getting out of this place as quickly as she could.

Her middle flexed uncomfortably with every step she took, reminding Mio of the wound that never heals.

The scar.

The permanent chain that tied her to the past.

Her heart wrenched as she remembered.

Her hands immediately turned cold and clammy.

This…was why she didn’t like hospitals.

Her footsteps quickened as she rushed towards the entrance.

She had to get out…now!

The musky hot breath caressing uncomfortably on her neck.

The suffocating hold around her wrists.

The uncomfortable weight settling down upon her middle.

“You are mine forever, Mio…You’ll never-”

“Wait!”

Mio’s heart shot up to her throat when she felt a hand grabbed hold of her wrist. Her mind spun, her pulse quickened and she felt her blood ran cold as her memories broke free from its floodgates.
She acted on reflex.

SLAP!

The slap rang like a gunshot inside the wide hospital lobby. All movements seemed to stop and the hubbub ceased immediately as eyes turned towards the two.

Time seemed to slow down as Mio took in the sight in front of her. Obsidian eyes widened as she saw a familiar brunette, eyes wide with shock and left cheek starting to bruise from the slap.

“Holy shit!” Tainaka Ritsu took a step back in shock as a hand rose up to baby her stinging cheek. That small action pulled Mio back from her thoughts and a gasp escaped her mouth when reality sunk in.

“Oh my god! I’m so sorry!” The math teacher quickly said, watching in horror as her student stared at her wide eyed “I’m sorry! I— my hand moved on its own…!”

Ritsu raised a hand to halt the barrage of apologies “its fine…I probably deserve it anyway, for scaring you.” She knew that her teacher looked a bit spooked and pale, and that’s why she came over to ask what’s wrong…and that ended up with her getting slapped good.

Owwie…

Mio was still looking stricken and the onlookers were not helping. She quickly grabbed the sleeve of Ritsu’s suit and pulled her outside the lobby, so that they’re standing by the steps leading to the parking lot. The cars’ engines would drown out their conversation.

“I’m sorry, again,” she said genuinely “are you alright? Is there anything I can do for you?” A slap didn’t leave a lasting damage right? It won’t—it won’t tear skin or gums or something…right? Paranoid thought started to whirl inside her mind, just like always when she’s panicked.

Ritsu was looking thoughtful for a moment, as she rubbed her still-stinging cheek.

Yes, it was that hard when her teacher slapped her.

And the anxiety of waiting for Ritsu’s reply was killing Mio softly.

“…Well, how about a date?” the brunette asked “to compensate for this injustice…?” a finger pointed at her bruised cheek.

The math teacher had to blink at that, afraid that she’s hearing things.

“….Excuse me, but…come again?”

The drummer sighed “You and me. One date and I call this even. Deal?” amber eyes looked very hopeful for some reason that Mio did not know. This suggestion was as mad as suggesting Mio to teach her 3-2 class clad only in a swimsuit for an entire month!

And she could not help but let her jaw drop and stared long and hard, her mind trying to process what she had heard correctly and how to respond to it without having her voice croak out mid-sentence. It’s amazing how this teenage girl could ruffle her feather sometimes.

“Tainaka-san…that’s….very…bold of you,” she began with a sigh “but no, anything but that.”

A date date with one of her student? A girl nonetheless! Well, not that she had any problem with the last part but…
Ritsu had this shocked look on her face that would made people think that Mio slapped her again in the same spot for the second time.

Yes, she was that shocked.

No one had ever refused to go on a date with her.

Never!!

This was hurting her pride...amongst other things.

“What! Why?” came the persistent questioning from the stubborn brunette. She was never one to give up, even when things look bleak to her. And especially on girl problems. Ritsu won’t lose without a fight on this battle to acquire a date with the charming Akiyama-sensei!

Mio’s eyes shifted around, trying not to look into the burning gaze of her student.

“Just, because!” the teacher replied back. Well that was not much of an explanation there, but it was the best she could do with this pressure.

“Care to elaborate?”

“I’m a girl— “

“I don’t care.”

“—and I’m your teacher!”

“Again, don’t care. One date?”

“No!”

The Math teacher massaged the bridge of her nose in exasperation. She was exhausted mentally from arguing with this persistent girl that she didn’t even notice that passerby’s were either giving them amused looks or thumbs up at a certain brunette. Their argument had gone public since minutes ago, to Mio’s obliviousness.

Ritsu tried her luck once more, clearing out her throat this time.

“Is it because you’re too old for me?”

An eyebrow twitched from the older woman “I’m only 22.”

“Then you have a boyfriend— “

“I’m single— “

Ritsu blinked and scratched her head “Are you gay then?”

“I’m bi!” Mio almost squealed in rebuttal.

“Why do I feel like I’ve held this conversation before?” It’s as though Ritsu have had this conversation with someone before…hmm…where and with whom…

Her eyebrows scrunched up in thought, but her thought was broken by her teacher who raised an eyebrow at her in confusion.

“Excuse me?”

A sigh and a wave of the hand from the shorter girl “no, no…nothing….anyway….please?” and the drummer had finally resorted to begging.

No, it’s not that she’s desperate for human companion…it’s just that…she had seen her teacher’s face earlier when she left the doctor’s office. A troubled face that just screamed out at her, as though asking for help. What can Ritsu do about it other than act on her instinct? She was never one to wait anyway.

But the first thing that had come to her once she got close to the older woman was to grab said woman’s wrist and be mistaken for a pervert…And even though she was slapped and yelled at for something she didn’t do, Ritsu just couldn’t and wouldn’t let her teacher leave just like that right now…this date could help her with whatever she’s feeling…and well, that’s pretty much why the drummer’s persistent right now.

If only Mio could read minds…she would have understood her student’s intention right now. But alas, she couldn’t and all that she had in her mind was utter confusion at how persistent her student was.

“…No, I can’t.” Not only that this girl was a student, Mio’s just…not ready for things like this yet. No matter in what shape or form, her heart just wouldn’t let her “Tainaka-san, I’m sorry…but no, I have to refuse.”

And as though she was trying to end the conversation between them, the Math teacher waved down a cab. She quickly got on the car before Ritsu could think of a comeback and left without another word, or explanation to her student.
The drummer was left behind dumbfounded…and confused.

I'm trying something a little different for this story. While it's published under one name, it's technically two stories, like its inspiration(s). But at the same time, it isn't. The way the character focus is split is roughly the same as its source, which helps since the majority of the main cast was already covered in depth in Countermelody! Though both are side stories, I'd hardly call either of them unimportant. Akira, Sachi and Ayame may be the ones who get closest to the source of what was going on in the first story.

Rather than letting my future be overwritten, I wrote the new future into the one I had already established.

Mizushima-sensei trusted her and it would be almost insulting if Mio would not do the same.

And so there was nothing left to do.

“Good day, sensei.”

The small white door closed with a snap.

Hospitals were one of the places Mio didn’t really enjoy visiting, but today’s visit were out of necessity so she had to bear it. Holding in her breath so the strong waft of alcohol didn’t reach her nose, the math teacher weaved in through the crowd expertly. Her eyes set on the hospital entrance, and her mind was focusing solely on getting out of this place as quickly as she could.

Her middle flexed uncomfortably with every step she took, reminding Mio of the wound that never heals.

The scar.

The permanent chain that tied her to the past.

Her heart wrenched as she remembered.

Her hands immediately turned cold and clammy.

This…was why she didn’t like hospitals.

Her footsteps quickened as she rushed towards the entrance.

She had to get out…now!

The musky hot breath caressing uncomfortably on her neck.

The suffocating hold around her wrists.

The uncomfortable weight settling down upon her middle.

“You are mine forever, Mio…You’ll never-”

“Wait!”

Mio’s heart shot up to her throat when she felt a hand grabbed hold of her wrist. Her mind spun, her pulse quickened and she felt her blood ran cold as her memories broke free from its floodgates.
She acted on reflex.

SLAP!

The slap rang like a gunshot inside the wide hospital lobby. All movements seemed to stop and the hubbub ceased immediately as eyes turned towards the two.

Time seemed to slow down as Mio took in the sight in front of her. Obsidian eyes widened as she saw a familiar brunette, eyes wide with shock and left cheek starting to bruise from the slap.

“Holy shit!” Tainaka Ritsu took a step back in shock as a hand rose up to baby her stinging cheek. That small action pulled Mio back from her thoughts and a gasp escaped her mouth when reality sunk in.

“Oh my god! I’m so sorry!” The math teacher quickly said, watching in horror as her student stared at her wide eyed “I’m sorry! I— my hand moved on its own…!”

Ritsu raised a hand to halt the barrage of apologies “its fine…I probably deserve it anyway, for scaring you.” She knew that her teacher looked a bit spooked and pale, and that’s why she came over to ask what’s wrong…and that ended up with her getting slapped good.

Owwie…

Mio was still looking stricken and the onlookers were not helping. She quickly grabbed the sleeve of Ritsu’s suit and pulled her outside the lobby, so that they’re standing by the steps leading to the parking lot. The cars’ engines would drown out their conversation.

“I’m sorry, again,” she said genuinely “are you alright? Is there anything I can do for you?” A slap didn’t leave a lasting damage right? It won’t—it won’t tear skin or gums or something…right? Paranoid thought started to whirl inside her mind, just like always when she’s panicked.

Ritsu was looking thoughtful for a moment, as she rubbed her still-stinging cheek.

Yes, it was that hard when her teacher slapped her.

And the anxiety of waiting for Ritsu’s reply was killing Mio softly.

“…Well, how about a date?” the brunette asked “to compensate for this injustice…?” a finger pointed at her bruised cheek.

The math teacher had to blink at that, afraid that she’s hearing things.

“….Excuse me, but…come again?”

The drummer sighed “You and me. One date and I call this even. Deal?” amber eyes looked very hopeful for some reason that Mio did not know. This suggestion was as mad as suggesting Mio to teach her 3-2 class clad only in a swimsuit for an entire month!

And she could not help but let her jaw drop and stared long and hard, her mind trying to process what she had heard correctly and how to respond to it without having her voice croak out mid-sentence. It’s amazing how this teenage girl could ruffle her feather sometimes.

“Tainaka-san…that’s….very…bold of you,” she began with a sigh “but no, anything but that.”

A date date with one of her student? A girl nonetheless! Well, not that she had any problem with the last part but…
Ritsu had this shocked look on her face that would made people think that Mio slapped her again in the same spot for the second time.

Yes, she was that shocked.

No one had ever refused to go on a date with her.

Never!!

This was hurting her pride...amongst other things.

“What! Why?” came the persistent questioning from the stubborn brunette. She was never one to give up, even when things look bleak to her. And especially on girl problems. Ritsu won’t lose without a fight on this battle to acquire a date with the charming Akiyama-sensei!

Mio’s eyes shifted around, trying not to look into the burning gaze of her student.

“Just, because!” the teacher replied back. Well that was not much of an explanation there, but it was the best she could do with this pressure.

“Care to elaborate?”

“I’m a girl— “

“I don’t care.”

“—and I’m your teacher!”

“Again, don’t care. One date?”

“No!”

The Math teacher massaged the bridge of her nose in exasperation. She was exhausted mentally from arguing with this persistent girl that she didn’t even notice that passerby’s were either giving them amused looks or thumbs up at a certain brunette. Their argument had gone public since minutes ago, to Mio’s obliviousness.

Ritsu tried her luck once more, clearing out her throat this time.

“Is it because you’re too old for me?”

An eyebrow twitched from the older woman “I’m only 22.”

“Then you have a boyfriend— “

“I’m single— “

Ritsu blinked and scratched her head “Are you gay then?”

“I’m bi!” Mio almost squealed in rebuttal.

“Why do I feel like I’ve held this conversation before?” It’s as though Ritsu have had this conversation with someone before…hmm…where and with whom…

Her eyebrows scrunched up in thought, but her thought was broken by her teacher who raised an eyebrow at her in confusion.

“Excuse me?”

A sigh and a wave of the hand from the shorter girl “no, no…nothing….anyway….please?” and the drummer had finally resorted to begging.

No, it’s not that she’s desperate for human companion…it’s just that…she had seen her teacher’s face earlier when she left the doctor’s office. A troubled face that just screamed out at her, as though asking for help. What can Ritsu do about it other than act on her instinct? She was never one to wait anyway.

But the first thing that had come to her once she got close to the older woman was to grab said woman’s wrist and be mistaken for a pervert…And even though she was slapped and yelled at for something she didn’t do, Ritsu just couldn’t and wouldn’t let her teacher leave just like that right now…this date could help her with whatever she’s feeling…and well, that’s pretty much why the drummer’s persistent right now.

If only Mio could read minds…she would have understood her student’s intention right now. But alas, she couldn’t and all that she had in her mind was utter confusion at how persistent her student was.

“…No, I can’t.” Not only that this girl was a student, Mio’s just…not ready for things like this yet. No matter in what shape or form, her heart just wouldn’t let her “Tainaka-san, I’m sorry…but no, I have to refuse.”

And as though she was trying to end the conversation between them, the Math teacher waved down a cab. She quickly got on the car before Ritsu could think of a comeback and left without another word, or explanation to her student.
The drummer was left behind dumbfounded…and confused.

‘What are you running away from…?’

I saw this on FF and it's so kewl. :3 Never thought Mio would be the teacher(On the other side, I did :3), but this hole theme was unexpected. :O

Although I'm just starting on this show (and enjoying it), I remembered Beck and decided to check FFN to see if there's any crossovers with other music-oriented anime...

...nope. Nada. Zero. Sad.

Why none? It could've been so damn awesome if at least in a fanfic the girls are jamming with the Mongolian Chop Squad, Johannes Krauser, Nana, or even living gods such as Eric Clapton and BB King.
