That alone, the removal of an already well established gameplay assistance, was just the top of the Downhill Jam.

You'll have to understand the chance of perceiving the 3rd dimension before you put it down. The lack of imagination was a killer point through much of the PSP's life, which it found solace in the CFW's.

Being an industry idiot and all, just wondering:

In terms of the "Touch Market", isn't the 3DS going to face some stiff competition from the upcoming I-Series 5 (Aka, Iphone5/Ipod5/Ipad5) in May or even the Android Applications?

Played a few and I must say, having (potentially) up to 64 Gigabytes (if not more by May) to play with, along with Operating Systems more powerful than the PSP (also if not more powerful by then) gives you quite a punch in the arena.

Still will get a 3DS because I've been a "Ninten-Tard" since I'm a little boy in the 1980s.

The difference here, is that I will not buy a new phone in order to play games.

Phones means monthly plans, one of the reasons 3DS will not use 3G because Nintendo doesn't want to force customers onto contracts. If you want to buy a phone, feel free to buy one that also runs good games. But I myself would rather pay only what I want to use.

And iPad isn't even a direct competitor to the 3DS. It doesn't matter how popular it is, it has no relation with a portable gaming device.

Well, the IPOD seems to be the "Multi Purpose Toy" of the "Three Sisters", with the emphasis of it being a toy, unlike the more buisiness-oriented Phone and the Pad is. And you don't need a phone account to use the IPOD, which is mainly for movies and music.

Playing the Street Fighter 4 Demo of it i the IStores, I can honestly say it feels like having a shrunken PS3 in your pocket in terms of graphics and gameplay quality.

Now, all the IPOD 5 needs is a lareger (touch)screen, and as a pure entertainment device it could well take on the 3DS, couldn't it?

Not as long as it is multipurpose, no.

3DS is not a toy, it is a gaming device. A specialised gaming device. You only pay for what you want it for and nothing more.

Come back when you take away the mp3 player, added buttons for both hands for gaming, and in general make it for games only.

I own an old ipod. I have used and enjoyed an ipad. But why pretend a fake substitute should replace the real thing? If Apple wants to make a gaming handheld, then make a gaming handheld. Until then I will be waiting.

Though Nintendo is still seems to be partially playing the "Diverse Market" Game with the 3D Camera available on the device, with the option of being able to save the photos for future viewing. Too bad that the images are under one megapixel.

Good job warping what the poster has actually said. That not what (s)he's said at all. (S)He's saying that you can't be certain of a victory, and that failure is a definite possibility, history be damned. There are enough examples.

Replace "PSP" with "3DS", and "GBA" with "DS", and it still makes sense. The 3DS doesn't bring anything new to the table. All that's changed is that the 3D graphics will now also be perceived as actual 3D by our brains. That doesn't make for any new gameplay experiences. Certainly not the like that was brought to the table by the DS.

This being said, the 3DS' biggest competitor will be its big brother, the DS.

Nice revisionism, there. A second analog joystick never was a dealbreaker.

Oh Gosh.

Just realized: Since Nintendo already has TWO Monster Hunter Games to its name, it has the rights to the franchise....

Which means, the next Monster Hunter Portable could very well be in glorious 3D!! YAY!!

Just want to point out that both format are dead. Sony switched to SD couple of months back, they even sell sony branded SD cards. As for UMD, who knows, but optical media for a handheld or portable devices are/were a bad idea from the beginning anyway.

Nintendo World 2011 is held this weekend in Tokyo! The stage program will be streamed via ustream, like the "The Last Story" conference recently, and can be found on the official HP.

Here is the list of shown playable and self-running demos and videos, taken from andriasang.com (because anoop already had the titles translated)

Quote:
As previously detailed, Nintendo World will be held from 1/8 to 1/10 at the Makuhari Messe convention center just outside of Tokyo. It will mark the first time the 3DS has gone playable for the general public.

Playable titles include:

* Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D The Naked Sample (auto demo) (Konami)
* Winning Eleven 3D Soccer (Konami)
* Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (Capcom)
* Resident Evil Revelations (Capcom)
* Samurai Warriors Chronicle (Tecmo Koei)
* Dead or Alive Dimensions (Tecmo Koei)
* Ridge Racer 3D (Namco Bandai)
* Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (Level-5)
* Nintendogs + Cats (Nintendo)
* Kid Icarus (Nintendo)
* Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo)
* Steel Diver (Nintendo)
* Pilot Wings Resort (Nintendo)
* AR Games (Nintendo)
* Nintendo 3DS Camera (Nintendo)

Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D should be one of the main attractions.

Titles to be shown in video form include:

* Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D The Naked Sample (auto demo) (Konami)
* Winning Eleven 3D Soccer (Konami)
* Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (Capcom)
* Resident Evil Revelations (Capcom)
* Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D
* Samurai Warriors Chronicle (Tecmo Koei)
* Dead or Alive Dimensions (Tecmo Koei)
* Ridge Racer 3D (Namco Bandai)
* Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (Level-5)
* Super Monkey Ball 3D (Sega)
* Kingdom Hearts 3D (Square Enix)
* Gundam The 3D Battle (Namco Bandai)
* Tales of the Abyss (Namco Bandai)
* One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP (Namco Bandai)
* Cubic Ninja (AQ Interactive)
* Tobidasu Puzzle Bobble 3D (Square Enix)
* Pro Baseball Famisuta 2011 (Namco Bandai)
* Animal Resort (Marvelous Entertainment)
* Xevious (Namco Bandai/Nintendo)
* 3D Beauty Clock (Bijin Tokei)
* Nintendogs + Cats (Nintendo)
* Kid Icarus (Nintendo)
* Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo)
* Steel Diver (Nintendo)
* Pilot Wings Resort (Nintendo)
* Star Fox 64 3D (Nintendo)
* Paper Mario (Nintendo)
* Animal Crossing (Nintendo)
* Mario Kart (Nintendo)
* AR Games (Nintendo)
* Mii Plaza (Nintendo)
I hope nintendo will do similar events in euroland and americas as well, like the pre-launch tour they did with the Wii. Giving the consumers hands on is always much better than having "experts" evaluating one's product.

The new Iwata Asks for the 3DS has some really interesting stuff, as usual. The Gamecube having the same 3D capabilities as the 3DS so long as you attach a special LCD screen on it was a surprising tidbit.

Also, judging by how much they talk about Luigi's Mansion and how they had a functional 3D version of it back then, I wouldn't be surprised if we see that ported to the 3DS within the launch period.

Honestly if Sony haven't locked up the next Monster Hunter for PSP 2 than they might as well scrap it. MHP3 is the main reason the PSP was Japan's #1 console of 2010. MH on the PSP (it flopped big time on Wii in comparison..) is becoming as big as Dragon Quest, but the main advantage of MH is that the next game won't come out when the system is already the winner. DQ games always come out well into the lifetime of each gen and go to the clear winner, SNES, PSX, PS2, DS and the next one on the Wii.

In other words DQ is not going to be a factor in selling a relatively new system, next MH could be massive for PSP2 or 3DS in Japan... PSP2 needs it way more considering 3DS is assured of next Pokemon and New Super Mario Brothers....

Except... That's the same battery life as DSi on the brightest light setting. So what's the big deal?

DSi: 9-14 hours, 8-12, 6-9, 4-6, 3-4 . From dimmest light setting to brightest. So if 3DS can run DS games at 5-8 hrs long on the brightest light setting, then it would literally have a battery life twice that of the DSi.

I personally use the dimmest light setting on my DSi, so I would do the same with my 3DS when I eventually get it. People are forgetting that the DSi got identical battery complaints back when it was new, but we got over it.

Blazblue CS II which was announced for PSP is now multiplat and coming to 3DS as well, I see a lot of that happening in the future with games that don't push the limits of the 3ds. Or PSP games with tacked on 3d being released on 3ds as well.

And you're assuming these figures are also from the brightest light setting? With 3D on? yeah right

And if you have to turn 3D off (and wifi and everything else) to improve the battery life than it kinda defeats the purpose of this being 3d in the first place.

We will find out who is right soon enough. As I say, it runs DS games at twice the battery time as the DSi, so the battery itself must be twice as powerful.

Just pointing out the obvious; that DSi got IDENTICAL complaints, but it still sold well.

Considering Nintendo previously lowballs the battery life for their handhelds (and those numbers tend to match the highest settings) when we get the first news on how long the battery lasts, Vallen's got some precedent to assume such.

i am still wondering if i will get this consider the negative you have in expense of marginally better graphic and 3d feature.

you probably not use 3d feature alot since you need to stand still. so quite useless on travelling.

also probably the one of the worse battery life for handheld device. 3-5 hours of battery life for playing 3ds game on lowest setting and you need 3.5 to recharge it fully.

also the price make you think to buy console instead of this. (the minimum possible price you will get is $250 and with game $60)

maybe i pass this and chose PSP2 instead

edit

Monster hunter on 3DS will very stupid decision consider short battery life and awkward control scheme

So 3DS games vary between ¥4,800 - ¥6,090 = 45€ - 60€ hmmm , dunno if they'll just give one price for EU & US . If they'll just give one price then , it'll be like 60€ i think.

Edit: Concerning the battery life , 3-5 h (3 h to recharge) ,this is "half" (or less) of the previous DS (dunno for the DSi)

Isn't that the reason why the special MH3rd edition PSP is supplied with the extended battery?
Honestly games such as PSO and MH shoudn't be on handhelds in the first place, but the ps2 and wii proves that these game just don't sell that great on home consoles anymore, blame it on monthly fees or not being able to socialise with people in a group.
If anything, the psp proves that 3h is more than enough for a gaming session, besides the 3ds powersupply/charger works without the cradle. In the end the games will probably decide if the 3ds will succeed or not. I reckon the majourity of people won't get the system for games with high demanding processing power, but will get game such as mario (2d), meaning battery life will probably run, for most people, a bit longer than we might expect.

and that the problem. DS barely work on hardcore gaming. technically is not been design for that one. yet the want 3DS to be one.

PSP does since it been design for hardcore gaming in mind.

MH3rd psp extended battery actually decission consider most of MH gamer replace slim battery with bigger one

by the way, you can only play older ds game for 5-8 hours. make me wonder they reason that they chose worse battery is because of to make cost down that still bit pricey
