Oh come on, it can already play games, movies, music and chat.

The only thing it can't do is make coffee; Now THAT would be a portable device I'd paly an arm and a leg for!!

seems that there would be two version of NGP (with and without 3G)

There Will Be More Than One Model Of The NGP

Quote:
Why the divide? Well, like Apple's iPad - which makes a similar distinction between models - the 3G-less version will surely be cheaper. Which could be important for a handheld that's no doubt going to be on the expensive side.
Call of Duty For NGP 'Will Set The Bar' For Next-Gen Portables

It's that last item on the list of features that has us most interested, considering Sony's push for integration between the PlayStation 3 and NGP. If your future Call of Duty games could feature persistent progression across both the console version and the portable one, that could be quite the hook—not to mention the opportunity to sell double the Call of Duty games to PlayStation fans each year.

Perhaps in Japan, but the PSP did not do well in the US and European market.

Also the PSP momentum in Japan only happened this recent years because of Hatsune Miku, Peacewalker, Dissidia and Monster Hunter, most of which are new titles. Which brings me to my next point.

The reason why the PSP didn't pick up steam initially is because SONY was followed the "portable" spirit too much in its early to mid years. It became the a medium to dump shoddy console ports.

What I am afraid is that SONY is going to follow this step and use the PSP2 as a portable dump for PS3 games.

Let's compare this to Nintendo. There initial line up also has ports, but it seems to me they are putting more effort to not make it simply ports. The new Kid Icarus, Paper Mario, Steel Diver, PilotWings, Resident Evil while borrowing franchise names are new games.

They should not try to market this as something that will substitute the Iphone, because honestly, they'll never be able to. Unless they plan to make the PSP2 officially open source which is very unlikely.

So, region lock or no region lock? If I can play games from Japan and my country on the same device, then I might switch over from Nintendo for this generation of handhelds.

I think the touch feature looks great. But how good it ends up depends on how the games handle it. Since the touch pad is on the back, you can't aim well with it, so tapping to "snipe" objects on screen would be unfeasible.

Graphics look great. Apparently they are just as good as PS3? Watching anime on this beast would be neat. If they port all the good PS3 games directly then I won't have to buy a PS3. Seeing the gimmick done with the PS2 and PSP, I doubt that'll happen though.

And price is not that big a deal for me. I seriously haven't bought a single gaming console (other than PCs) since I got a first release DS back in 2005, although I might get a DS Lite to replace that since DS Lite is cheap now.

Yes, there is the fear of that.

But like I said, none of those tech demos are in any shape or form 'confirmed for game development.' In fact, those few games shown in the trailers seemed a little more positive towards the direction that they aren't going to be port-heavy on the 'games-in-development.' Sure, Killzone and Uncharted feels like their console mothership games, but they don't seem to be ports.

E3 and TGS will be the determinant on whether or not NGP's initial line-up would have the presence and strength to match the 6+ months catch-up game that Sony will have to push against the 3DS.

Sony has its share of 'downright fucking retarded' moments as far as their gaming division goes, but NGP actually doesn't look too bad from the get-go. I mean, surely they've noticed the amount of fuck-ups they've gone through from the $599 PS3 and PSP Go.

... I hope.

If it has hdmi, 3d could still be possible. Technically this handheld could turn things around in terms of console gaming, basically one console for all, portable gaming and gaming on big screen. If sony does it right, they can skip the whole psp/ps3 root key issue and replace both with one system. Now that would be a true next generation console.

they reason why most of PSP 1 game is port is because there barely any uniqueness between PSP and ps2 aside being portable. NGP will try to change that by having many control feature like touchscreen and sixaxis. most of the game that in the demo is using atleast one of this feature. i am pretty sure that even if they use franchise name. it will be have different experience than console version

actually that the market they were heading. consider they many app like near allow NGP owner to more socialise and interact with each other. it's pretty hard to see most of high end gadget will not be multi-service

it actually easier to snipe when you use back touchpad. because your finger are not blocking the screen. obviously there is front touchscreen and you can use ussual button if you want to

New interview with another Sony Head boss Hirai mentions that they'll be two sku's one with 3G and one without it:

Quote:
One of the major points from the interview is that Hirai acknowledged that there are plans for multiple versions of the hardware, including Wi-Fi only versions and 3G + Wi-Fi versions. Such hardware developments will be made on a region-by-region basis, he said.

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/201...i_ngp_details/
This confirms two Sku's. Which is good. The no 3G one will be cheaper. Hopefully I'll be $300 or below.

The price is still unconfirmed but there is good indication that it might cost $300.

if sony can make NGP price around 300-250 then they have chance to fight (or even beat ) 3ds

IIRC it was mentioned that the will subsidise the NGP, just like with the ps3, to stay competitive. I think the price to get the console itself isn't a problem, but the price for software. Unlike umd, flash memory+rom are bit more costly, see DS carts vs PSP umd storage size and pricing. Hopefully the software/games will cost less (PSN) or stay the same (physical media) with the NGP, compared to the PSP.
Looks like the PlayStation Suite is not only for NGP, but for android devices as well. I don't know if they license it out, but that can help to keep the NGP price down. More on andriasang.com. I reckon the ueber-next generation the playstation wil be a gaming OS, with no specific hardware, seeing how things are going.
As for beating the 3DS, i don't think it need to beat it at all. Most gamers will have both anyways, the core market are those so called unpredictable/casuals, and most of them won't buy those so-called high profile games anyways. As long it makes money sony will be happy.

I don't believe Sony is aiming to beat the 3DS, they are trying to compete in a different market now. Also it's quite impossible to beat the market Nintendo has already. Tbh I think the NGP will aim for the 300$-350$ area atleast, with the 3G being in the 400$+ or something. Either way I can't wait for it to be released.

At least sounds like it'll be a pretty strong handheld, just a question about the games. Right now not really anything that I'm going to run to get one of these for, but plenty of time still until it comes out.

most of the game been show is tech demo. one is how new NGP input can been used on game (uncharted, little deviant) other is how easy is put ps3 game on NGP (MGS4, yakuza)

consider that they have 80+ developer and publisher on board already with more to come along with sony usual strong first party, i bet we have strong support on software side already.

I don't see it being $250 at launch even for the non-3G model .. $300+

unless they're very sure that it'll do good (not just ok .. better vs 3DS then PSP1 did vs DS) and bring everything back

The inclusion of 3G, in my opinion, is pretty interesting. In a way, it's almost like a different approach to region-locks.
Just wishful thinking
But let the 3G-less Version be Sony should aim for the same price as the 3DS or even cheaper and the 3G Version being 300+ it'll be great if it'd have LTE or WiMax compatible radios but I don't see that happening

Not really interested with 3G feature, so I will go with the cheaper one.
I think at most Sony will go around $300 for it. It might be possible for them to go for $400+, although I'd kill myself if that were the case.

I wonder how much of this handheld's potential for piracy..

I'll say between 280-350$ without 3G and 300-400$ with 3G.

Well , without 3G for me , it's useless , unless you want to surf on net everytime on your move but don't play game with it , it'll lag so much.
