Bullshit.

So we have probably like one paragraph saying "zomg they're soooo powerful" and then probably like 50 chapters, a Manga, and an Anime showing that they just act like slightly smaller gundams. Of course people will endlessly parrot that one passing example and try to ignore the vast mountains of counter evidence insisting that no they really ARE that powerful they just never do anything LIKE this on screen because... errr... OMFG SHUT UP THEY'RE SO POWERFUL!

Don't you just love it when authors start throwing out numbers?
No, becasue most authors are dolts that don't bother to check any of the numbers they're spewing. So we get shit like Halo MAC guns with the firepower of a dino killer asteroid, accelerator controlling enough energy to kill all life on earth, and exo-suits that apparently fly at mach 25 but fight in melee with glowly beam swords.

Says the guy that brought it up here to begin with, beside which it's relevant in character creation to know the overall power level, and that stuff is compete and utter nonsense.

A IS can't even evade two dinky beer can missiles in ep 2 and you expect me to buy that another unit shot down 2,000 of them? Please that stuff is complete crap contradicted by everything we see in the acutal series. The IS are just mini-mecha and behave just like any other anime mecha that stuff cited is just wank that's not even vaguely supported by what we see. So unless you want to argue that for some asinine reason all IS we see in combat are operating at like 1% of there "real" capabilities I'm going to merrily disregard such hyperbolic bullshit.

I suspend my disbelief by accepting that flying anti-gravity power armor can exist at all. That doesn't mean I then accept any old horseshit someone serves up to me without question.

Spoiler for small spoiler:

Quote:
I certainly believe so, as the floating island is a technological marvel. Karon grew up in the Southern Australis mining states, a 3rd generation migrant from Singapore after the island became submerged, so she refers to Singapore as the Federation. Though it annoys her to sometimes have to quantate that by refering to the Metro. Given the endless haggling and puzzling decrees coming out of the capital, it is little wonder that residents Australis think rather low of it. Especially when the Three Diagram computer is what's doing most of the groundwork.
The Federation sounds like Malaysia. I don't think we went back, and I wouldn't want to!

Besides, I wanted to call it the Metropolis because I don't want to get sued by the land of private enterprises held by government investors.

Quote:
Agreed, that would mean that the STE team's SISAR-21 is a related rifle, but again taken in a different direction to Metro thinking. Its like the SAR-21 version that has rails for mounting gadgets versus the stock one you used for MEISTER.
MEISTER doesn't need rail mounted gadgets, it has a scope that can attune with the IS to see where the gun is pointing. For a more accurate aim one just need to aim down the scope.

Quote:
...is I just me, or are the Night Elf references for real here?
Nope. Those RC units are named Moonfangs for a reason.

Quote:
Now I get it, Starwright works like a Strike Gundam, interchangeable packs!

And no problems about hiding secrets in there. Its starting to look like Starwright is a different project from STE's version altogether. Which is even better, the MDF going one way while the SAF is going in another. I doubt there'd be a head-on clash, but it will create friction between the Federation's reps, and play into the "size of Metro's IS program is the world's worst kept secret" bits.
It is a joint "privately funded" project (the Metro puts capitalism to build the best IS.....smart idea) initiated by Metro and Japanese contracted engineers, most of which are private engineers who came from across the world to lend their expertise. It is something like the F-35 Lightning project but each country has their own variation in the electronics and avionics.

Cosmic Shroud is a Gen 3 modular add-on to give Starwright more weapons, which otherwise, in its default config, only has the MEISTER, guided RPGs and Blind Horizon. But still, the last weapon is the most mysterious and deadliest weapon of that mech.

I'll be touching on Magaru if I have the time to write the fic. That is the first mystery of Starwright.

Quote:
I'm approaching from ground level actually. The side of "what the hell are the brass doing", that was more of the feeling I get from the country these days. Things are working fine, because everyone wants to keep the status quo going, but there's this nagging doubt that it might buckle and undo everything.
Well the introduction of the IS is a combo-breaker for the MDF. Now girls have to serve NS too....as mass-production IS pilots covering the air while the guys take the ground fight.

And here is the schematic of the anti-IS round without the cartridge :

1. Polymer housing.
2. Superconducting solenoid coil with leads connected to 3.
3. Thin ceramic casing.
4. Film of high explosive.
5. Tungsten penetrator.
6. Secondary charge to fire 5.

When the bullet connects with the electric shield of another IS, it juices up the solenoid (2), which fires off the high explosive (4) and discharges a small but intense EM shockwave that puts a hole in the shield where the bullet hit. The remaining electric charge travels down to the secondary charge (6) and fires off the penetrator (5), hitting the base armor of the IS.

I am at a loss of whether to include a cartridge or not for the round....with an EM accelerator it doesn't seem to need one.

Which is why I hope a war breaks out somewhere along the half-way point of the series. Make the IS prove their reputation. Personally I'm invoking the Gundam principle on this: Offensive capabilities increase exponentially relative to the number of enemies the unit is fighting.

Mai Otome is another example of this. During the one-on-one fights, the robes hardly showed their reputation for being able to end wars single-handedly. Then a dozen or two episodes down the line, Mai obliterates an entire army.

"de Wolf" is actually Dutch for "the wolf" already.

Wolf themes... Hmm.... That's something to think about. Maybe not as blatantly obvious as wolf ears (though I could have them pop out on occasion when she's planning something), but I could make her a night person.

First, is the fact that you guys already have a fanfiction thread:

http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=101424

The thread was created quite sometime ago and I even made a post here to tell everybody about it. If you want to take your original characters further and want to start creating a story around them please use the thread linked above instead.

Second, please avoid trowing jabs at other people simply because you disagree with them. If people start to take things too seriously (and personal) their posts will be removed without warning.

About time you noticed. Its made to set-up a misunderstanding. Australia is a Federation, so Karon grew up thinking that was an appropriate way to describe the country. Also, she's into Star Trek, which is why Federation appeals to her the right way. And as a 3rd gen migrant to the mining states of Singapore, she doesn't have the fear of Malaya like we do. Besides, for them, Singapore bought out Malaysia when the flood came and messed up the whole continent.

Nevertheless, Representative Malaya will nod gladly at that, Representative Indo-China remains ambivalent, while Representative Metropolis will have her hair standing after loads of 'Federation' this 'Federation' that.

No worries man; each of the 4 official representatives identify themselves differently. I'll make sure the Metro rep does like your's. Thankfully, she's already graduated; the first 3 STE IS are already active in the [IS-League], so we won't have any confusion there.

True. Though for the SISAR-21, I combined the SAR's butt with the front rails of the SCAR-15 stretching all the way back to where the carrying handle would be. The rails are for attaching additional weapons like RGG launchers, wired claws and beam bayonets. For Karon, she likes it simple, so there's a red dot attached and a vertical underslung grip, and that's it.

Aaaah. :3

I'm updating Merlion's combat data over time. It's grown quite a bit, and since its for Arena fights, its a little dramatic:

IS-calibur: Karon first charges her opponent with sonic cutters drawn, knocking them off-balance and stunning them. Alternatively, she can fire the wired Boost Knuckles with Sonic Cutter unsheathed to achieve a similar effect for targets out of reach. Gou then launches off both Matador claws and slams them into the ground. Gou detaches her overhead pack, which transforms briefly into the humanoid mecha Imouto before morphing into a giant crossguard that docks with the claws in stone. Karon then grabs the hilt and takes off skywards, pulling a massive 15 meter long blade of pink energy from the ground then finishing her opponent off with it.

(the Merlion's warfighting protocol is much saner and less over the top. This is for audience fanservice.)

I think its a reverse; girls would gladly vie for the few spots available to Singapore at the Academy. There's just not enough cores to go around and make an army.

However, once the girls qualify, they will serve 2 years "NS" as professional gladiators for the IS-League, while conducting live drills with SAF units in between in a hush-hush fashion. They may go on to join the Singapore Lions and represent the Federation at Monco Grosso.

Actually, I'd modify your idea. Instead of a coilgun, how about a real railgun? I only recently learnt that there's a difference. Both don't need cartridges, but the railgun's added advantage is that it doesn't have the magnetic saturation problem of a EM-accelerated coilgun.

The rest, I realize its kinda like a tank AP sabot isn't it? Sweet... No wonder it can't be summoned. Karon won't be carrying that version around because its too militarized for her purposes. BUT as an NCC (Commando), she's trained in both.

With regards to her weaponry, maybe we could add something like the Shock Cannon from Starcraft's siege tank? One shot = solves all problems.

Yours could be the genki-girl type with too much energy to spend, and thus unique in a sense that she's the only IS pilot who has a henshin quote and does it during the IS leagues, much to the chagrin of her official handlers at the Metro embassy.

Sure, it does throw face, but she's good and efficient so the officials, like any other Singaporean, overlook that point with a facepalm.

Maybe we could use the word "regional coalition", since they are all part of SEA? Or even better, form something like the SEA version of NATO, thus giving them the military cooperation and similarity fitting into the storyline.

Quote:

I think there is a misunderstanding.

Rachel isn't Rep Metro. She's just a normal girl who wants to attend the IS Academy so as to fulfill her wish of taking after her mother as a legendary IS pilot. And her dad's connections got her there.

Karon can be Rep Metro. I think that would be a good reason to put them both in the same dorm.

Ahhh too many good ideas. Need to find someplace to write this down......

I have to say no to this one. A railgun works with only metallic bullets that can conduct electricity, and since this bullet is trapped in a polymer casing, the Lorentz Force doesn't apply.

Then again, the coilgun might be a bad idea due to Lenz's Law (magnetic fields generating electric current and potential difference), and that the explosives within the gun are electrically fired, it can cause horrendous chamber explosions.

Basically, the bullet draws electricity from the shield it hits (which is basically an electrically charged field working on piezoelectric principles like the Phase Shift armor in GS). The high current AND voltage of the shield electrifies the bullet and triggering all the explosives, PLUS fire the penetrator in a split second.

Yeah, it is based on the Raufoss round (Incendiary + armor piercing). The outer casing is based on the FCG (flux compression generator) type of EMP bomb.

That's what her heavy cannon is for. But speaking of which, the six-barrel heavy lasers are sort of similar to the Thor's shoulder mounted cannons, now that I think about it. Just beam variants, since it'd be rather hard for an IS to carry around enough ammunition for a sustained barrage. Beams let me handwave that.

Sure, it does throw face, but she's good and efficient so the officials, like any other Singaporean, overlook that point with a facepalm.
Meanwhile, the Japanese audience goes crazy and she becomes an instant favorite.

Hmm, come to think of it, those gizmo's on her head look sort of ear-ish, don't they? What if I'm going to make them respond like ears?
How about giving her a kemonomimi hairband with ears (actually her radar receiver) that responds to her emotions as her IS Deploy?

Then we could name her full burst mode MOEB (Maximum Optimisation Energy Barrage)!

Well there could be a charge-type energy cannon, or it simply has a built-in nanite molecular constructor which assembles ammunition on the fly.

Have you ever wondered why this game, which is supposed to be a small-scale game, become immensely popular not only in Japan but around the world? Now it has 5 localisations in total globally!

When you mix girls with mecha, guns and swords, their main concept of moe is always inclined towards badass adorable. Though it is incredibly hard to make the character both cute and badass at the same time

Hmmmm.......Ok, let me consult this with the rest of the staff. I am not so stubborn as to close my ears to other people's suggestions and it may be easier to handle everything like this.

As long as the focus is your original characters, then yes.

Nah, there's such a thing as throwing too many fetishes on a character.

I'll juggle the ideas. It's not as if I have to reveal all weapons right now anyway, she might get more as the story progresses.

I am still amazed that game made it outside Japan at all.

Fixed bio.
Now, could someone tell me when and why IS cores were distributed to other countries? I've probably got that canon wrong.

*whacks forehead*

The ASEAN Foundation!! How the heck did I forget that. XD

I'll need to go rework this a few bits.

Karon can be Rep Metro. I think that would be a good reason to put them both in the same dorm.
...that saves me quite a bit of effort.

Okay I didn't have to go mess up Australia for this lol!! Its still her birthplace, but she returns to Singapore for NS. Sounds familiar? XD

The option is there, just options not taken.

Looking forward to reading them. Once I find time in between RPing for Valkyria Chronicles, I'll go pump something out. Already dreamed up Karon's first appearance.

I see. Well we could also handwave the shield to be able to alter the universal magnetic constant, that way a coilgun would work much better. After all, Rin's IS could use compressed physical space as bullets, altering universal constants should be easy.

Catches people off guard. Like how an innocent imouto suddenly turning into a trolling sadist can be very very unpredictable.

Totally worth it. And she's even protected by the ABS while henshin posing.

I have to add that its not compulsory. Karon can shift quickly into full IS mode silently in a real warfighting scenario. This, like IS-Calibur and Raising Heart Breaker, is part of her fanservice protocol. Gladiators have to be entertaining, don't they?

I must have unintentionally done it. Gou Karon's imouto-type character is actually her IS' that she allows to control her body and experience being human. Karon herself is cold, cunning and manipulative, and would do anything if it yields results. Including that henshin to grab attention; she's very hard to embarrass, too.

The end result is someone who's an adorable imouto most of the time, turning a little GAR when the time calls it, and when shit hits the fan...

"You need to cool your head a little." /trollface

Sleepy-heads, apathetic folk and split personalities. Ling's going to have a handful with that class of hers.

Cores were distributed amongst the other countries to preserve the power balance, since a single IS has a significant impact on a countries military power.

Also, good to see another IS going for more firepower then hotblood sword action.

Firepower is always good. Pink beams of wide-are destruction? Very very good. :3

(see below for more details. IS-Calibur was more the exception rather than the rule)

EDIT: IS-Calibur was dropped for diluting the theme of beamspam.

Well you could just take the hairband with "wings" that actually just press the hair above her ears to her head. They could just move up and down according to her mood (usually down since she doesn't exactly care about anything else during daytime other than SLEEP).

She could speak in a nonchalant Sanya-like voice in arena fights :

Helena :
Target spotted.
Acquiring range.
Coordinates received.
Readying weapons.
Firing.

Opponent :
Oh what is she - WHATTHEHELLHOWTHEHECKAMIGOINGTODODGETHAT?

Helena :
Boring. I want to sleep.

That is one way of badass adorable. Just draw a few pictures of her sleeping soundly on her desk or curling up in a corner of the gym store during P.E classes (skiving) will sure boost her moe factor by over 9000.

Just don't bleed to death drawing the last suggestion.

Well the PVs were initially brought over from Nico to Youtube. That is what prompted the mass pre-order and the localisation to Korea during launch (the goddesses are so cute that even the Koreans want them).

And once the Koreans have them, the rest of the world demanded them. And NISA had to obey.....Atelier Totori was released earlier but localised much later.

With regards to Karon, I am going to read the specs later after I cleaned up my Econs project. Also, I have pretty much concrete character map of Rachel :

- Kuudere
- Single Ponytail to the bottom of neck (takes it off if she does a full transform, retains it in partial transform)
- Lawful, hardworking - basically the total opposite of Karon
- Often skewed and totally wrong interpretation of interactions between others e.g : thinks that Houki actually slept with Ichika, who is the sub to his sister Chifuyu, etc.
- Shows a yandere streak when using Blind Horizon
- Uppity when it comes to dealing with "bad students"
- Cosplay victim. Of almost anyone who brings her shopping.
