I felt this series was great and ended on a high note. A high note meaning - you will now want to read the manga!

I don't find it disturbing at all, but rather as an imitation of the darker side of life. If you find it disturbing you are probably still sheltered. Go out and learn and you will realize you will just take it on face value.

Yeah, sure that there's lots of "bad people" out there, but not that much in comparison to "normal people". Those are the exception, not the rule.

So saying that "reality is like this" isn't true at all, it's just the ugliest and smallest part of it. At least, that's how I see it.

Err... I don't think Elfen Lied resembles reality much, and IMO that's exactly why it isn't really that disturbing. It's kinda hard to relate to the thought process of some superhuman mutants, actually I can't really relate to any character in EL, those kind of characters just feels so... out of reality... That's why I think series like Infinite Ryvius, Narutaru, MONSTER, Now and Then Here and There, etc. are much more disturbing, the characters in those series are much more... "normal-human-like" I guess, which are much easier to relate to. The EL characters are more or less going extremes...

I may think that you aren't that old yet GarBhaD, because except for the psychic girls cutting off limbs and the fact that every girl in this Anime is HOT this does look like a slice of life.

1) Bosses are cruel and dumb to their employees.
2) Some fathers do rape their children
3) Lots of children do develop complexes during their younger years, especially orphans.
4) There are people with guns who just smack other people around just because.
5) Denial is a common side effect of trauma.
6) Some really stupid people graduate out of the best universities.
7) The government is involved in a ton of covert things that you don't know about.
8) A melody heard many years ago sometimes just brings back some buried memories.

and the list goes on. Very Real Life.

I probably wouldn't have watched this except for the fact that it has hot psychic girls cutting peoples limbs off

Speaking of hot vector-wielding girls, has anyone wondered why Nana's body is in as good a shape as it is (before the whole 'losing her arms of legs' thing)?

After all those experiments and those metal balls being shot at her, why isn't her body covered in bruises, cuts, stitches, etc? I've always wondered about that... ... : /

They seem to heal much better than us. All the diclonous or whatever took millions of fatal wounds. Or it could be just that it's a cartoon and not real life.

Well, it's probably the latter... still, I think a few scars and nicks would increase Nana's cuteness. Maybe that's just me, though.

The metal balls shot out are enough to cause concussions.

Perhaps, the wall the silpelts are chained to, is probably similar to plaster, and the shackles are probably hooked to a real wall behind the absorption wall.

Surprisingly enough, it sort of has. In my mind, Elfen Lied ranks right up there with Saikano and Gunslinger Girl as one of the very best "tragic" anime made in recent years. I'm so grateful that I decided to stick with this show, because it's about fifty times better than it has any right to be. I look forward to buying the DVDs.

dreamless: Naruto... has realistic characters? You must be taking some extremely heavy drugs to come to that conclusion. Naruto probably has the worst, most stereotypical characters ever created in an anime.
While Elfen Lied is also unrealistic, it's something new, or at least applies old clichès in a new way. As for the experiments done on the mutants, take a look at our last world war. It wasn't exactly uncommon that prisoners in german concentration camps were experimented on, testing new drugs, weapons and equipment, cutting them up, as well as more general research related to health, strength and stamina which today is being done on animals. So, cruelty in certain circles is absolutely being reflected realistically. What is not realistic, though, is the way the average citizens are treating the young girls in the show. Most young girls who are seen hurt will immediately be helped by people passing by... and while kids can be incredibly cruel, I doubt they'd bash a dog to death in a classroom at school.

Anyway, I think it's amazing that a series can make me feel sympathetic to a girl who's slaughtered hundreds of innocents and even killed the main guy's parents.

because there are supprisingly a lot of dyslexic people out there.

i've seen narutaru but i lost interest.

i've seen saikano and i loved it,,, it didnt make me cry though...

the ONLY movie to every make me cry was grave of the firefiles

because when the girl died, you immediately knew that the boy was going to die too.. and thats what made me cry

i've never been moved to tears by ANY thing before.

im going to buy this anime if it ends the way i think it will.

( actually i have no idea how its going to end.)

I know that there are parents that rape their children.
I know that there are bosses who treat their employees as trash.
I know that childrens may develop complexes (I don't see what this has to do with the series, though).
I know that there are psychopath with guns, etc etc. The last 3 statements don't have anything to do with the series, so I'll guess you were trying to be funny.

But again, that isn't the rule but the exception. Do you really think that ALL bosses tyrannize their workers? Do you really believe that most parents rape their children!? All people with guns are dangerous sadistics? For God's sake, of course NOT!! The world is not so rotten yet. Saying that life is like this is false because you're just noticing a small part of it. Moreover, a part that it's NOT the average! It's like saying that all muslims are suicide terrorists - that's plainly stupid!

Even supposing that hot red-headed girls with "vectors" could exist, the chain of events that take place on the anime is really tragic, to the point that it'd be A LOT of bad luck for something like that to happen. While it's possible (again, if those characters could exist) it's very unlikely to happen, thus not realistic. Or do things like that happen around you everyday? If you compare dramas to reality, most of them are overstatements of the bad side of life, where disgraces come one after the other. Saying that is reality is like that is nearly as bad as saying that Naruto could be real :P Not as bad because dramas could be (that's what make'em attracting and interesting). But seriously, the chances are very low.

About government conspiracies, with a few exceptions, it's difficult to discern true facts from paranoia. Only time can tell (or do you believe in the existence of Area 51? :P Government experimenting in secret with mutants: that's soooo realistic. Beware! they're watching you... wake up man!).

On topic again with there series...
Don't you think it's strange that all the diclonius can speak? I mean, some have been confined in laboratories since they were born. Mariko always has even sealed! Who took the time to teach'em to speak (and lots of other things necessary for understanding)?
Not just that, but Lucy knew about Kurama's past and family. Did the doctors take the time to explain thier lifes while they throw metal balls to the guinea pigs?

...how can the director and his son have horns? Kurama and others were infected by the virus but they didn't develop like that. So why those 2 became diclonius? Up until now, all diclonius were females and sterile. The only one with the ability to reproduce is Lucy, isn't it? (so they couldn't be born from other diclonius). Then, how can it be??

Elfen Lied beaten some of the animes in my top A list? For me, no. Even the manga version doesn't do that. It's tragic, but more or less it's tragic for the sake of tragedy itself IMO. I think when compared to other tragic series like, say, Key the Metal Idol, Lain, Now and Then Here and There, Saikano, Narutaru, TEXHNOLYZE, etc. etc. it lacks depths, the theme of Elfen Lied seems to be just tragedy itself, with not much else.

this anime has blown evangelion out of the water.

this anime.... will never be surpassed.

this anime.... shows the true capabilities of how a human expresses one emotion to another.

the reason why i got stuck watching it,,, was the main theme.

the intro theme.... i was like...

the song was speaking to me and saying " this anime will not suck... this anime will not suck"
