I'll nominate REC and Nodame Cantabile, though for the latter you need to watch the sequels as well.
Cross Game works, too, though it's a long wait.

Toradora! - number one hands down. Nothing beats it, really... plotline, pacing, entertainment value, character development, the feel-good factor, everything about it is good. Neither too childish nor too mature and therefore suitable for everyone.
Honey and Clover - why hasn't anyone mentioned this one yet? I'll admit it's not everyone's cup of tea. It's quite slow-paced, contemplative and melancholy, but for me personally, it hits very close to home. One reason why I like Toradora and Honey and Clover so much is because of their very realistic portrayal of relationships. Both are "slice-of-life"-type stories, dealing with issues that we come across in real life, with characters that we can relate to and empathise with. Fantasy element: nil. Clannad is good too. Not your ordinary high school romance. After Story is a great tearjerker that can hold its own against any Korean drama. That said, the fantasy element makes no sense whatsoever. Also, Clannad aired around the same time as Toradora and the Clannad characters (except the male protagonist) just seemed so... flat in comparison. Feature films: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki wo kakeru shoujo), Whisper of the Heart (Mimi wo sumaseba). Oh dear... Shuffle, good god no. And Hana Yori Dango... One of the most over-adapted, hackneyed stories of all time. By now, the whole continent of Asia must know F4 inside and out, several times over. Full Moon wo Sagashite... sweet story, but look at the ages of the protagonist and her lover -_- Last edited by Yukinokesshou; 2011-07-06 at 13:56. |

The main deal with Clannad is indeed the After Story. It features one special girl until the end. In case that this girl turns out to be unlikeable for someone, only the Visual Novel leads to an happy ending with the remaining ones which are mostly done quite well for my taste. But that ending in return is completely ignored in After Story. |
