Again with the splitting up of California into smaller states. This time it is the South Eastern rural parts that want to break away. Last time it was the northern rural parts that wanted to get away from the cities. First time it was the Mexican Southern Californians that wanted to distance themselves from the Northern Anglo population.

I did my History Thesis paper on state secession movements, mainly focusing on California (specifically the State of Jefferson, and the last time they wanted to break up the state in the early 1990s that ended up lost in committee after going to a three way split the media termed (Northern California = Logland, Central California = Fogland, Southern California = Smogland))
another welfare state in the making

other then SD and maybe orange county, the rest are some of the poorest counties in the CA. Fresno alone is a money pit.

It would help the rest of the state through since the coastal area wouldn't have to pay for services to the those 13 counties.

Seriously wish they'd actually do it, since it would pretty much screw them financially and benefit those of us who live in norcal significantly.

By the time they get around to splitting California up, I'll be in some other state.

Considering they have to get the State of California and Congress to approve of the split to make a state out of part of an existing state....not likely to happen even if they locals want to leave. The rest of the State probably won't be all for it, and Congress probably won't care to even look at it.

Unless they can gain the national support that the State of Jefferson got...before Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Could have happened...but the war brought what the region wanted most...a new major road and a boosted economy because of it.

The only downside is it would give the republican 2 extra senators.

not that hard to get approval form the rest of the state once the voters realize just how much of a money pit that part of the state is. The budget would immediately go form in the red to black as soon as it shake free the rest of those counties.

Republican would be all for it since it would give then 2 additional senators. The Democrates would insist on either giving DC senators or crave out a Blue state form a existing Red State.

How do Puerto Rico voter lean politically? Does Texas even have a viable Democratic section to cut out...as it use to have the option of breaking down into smaller states. (there are a few other territories left.)

culturally i notice most Hispanics lean to the right but vote Democrat because the Republicans are in general antagonistic Hispanics. Except for Cubans-Americans who generally support Republicans because of the Republicans support of the Travel ban to Cuba. A big problem with PR as a state would the House Rep would need to be reorganize. Craving a state form existing state won't have the same sort of problems.

if it is to crave out a new state, i would just cut out Houston/Austin area in Texas as new Blue state. I been told that the Austin(or Houston) is more left then San Francisco.

We've had fifty stars on the flag for the longest part of our history. 52 years. The 48 star flag was second now at 46 years. I know they have designs for a 51 and 52 star flags...I think they have designs up to 56 stars even.

That would be interesting to see. On the other hand, 50 is a nice, round number.

I would agree. No Cal and So Cal are too vastly different economically demographically and geographically. However, in a few months it won't matter to me what California does with itself.

San Francisco will likely vote it down...just because Los Angeles isn't leaving with the rest of South California (that was the main reason the two way split didn't happen last time...San Francisco does not want to be associated with Los Angeles.)

and

For information purposes on the subject matter of a "51st State".

Netflix investors cheer fee hike

Quote:
Investors in Netflix – who have already enjoyed a big year on the stock – took some more upside Tuesday afternoon after the company essentially hiked its rates for subscribers who use both its streaming service and one of its mail-order DVD plans.

Around midday, Netflix NFLX announced a plan to separate its streaming and mail-order plans for U.S. subscribers. The rate for the unlimited streaming plan will remain at $7.99 per month, while the rate for a mail-order plan that allows 1 DVD out at a time has been cut to $7.99 per month from $9.99 per month. The cost for the 2-DVD plan was trimmed to $11.99 per month from $14.99 per month.

However, subscribers will no longer be allowed to have both under the same service. So the cost for someone using both an unlimited streaming plan along with having 1 DVD out at a time has jumped to $15.98 from $9.99 – a hike of 60%.

Shares were flat before announcement, but traded up up 1.4% to $294.85 in later action.

The company said in its statement that the change was made “to better reflect the costs of each and to give members a choice.”

Unsaid was the fact that the company now faces little primary competition in this market. Amazon.com AMZN allows subscribers to its Prime shipping service to view a limited number of movies through its own streaming service.

Apple AAPL sells or rents movie downloads a la carte, and Hulu also offers streams at $7.99 a month without having to worry about shipping DVDs and running fulfillment centers.

Some analysts complain that Netflix is over-valued, with a 67% run-up this year and a share price near the $300 mark. Some believe the shares have more room, with the highest price targets currently sitting at $325.

The next catalyst – either up or down – will likely come with the company’s second quarter earnings report on July 25.
The investors are happy because they finally can close their positions and take their profits, since the stock isn't moving much before the price hike.

How do they lean? Not like they get a say in anything. Either make Puerto Rico a state or cast it off. None of this in between BS. Of course, my 'fair' opinion isn't realistic, but whatever.
