Yeah, now that I think about it, I was surprised too that she didn't completely chew him out for having such a hobby. And then there's the fact that she was hardly angry with him for suddenly being on her bed in the middle of the night. She's either becoming more calm and accepting of things or, as my shippy side wants to believe, she's becoming more in love with Kyon and willing to forgive him for things without lashing out.

Oh, and just want to say that I'm glad everyone is enjoying our translations. It was worth all the time and effort!

Haruhi always seems to know the (for lack of a better work) troupe for these things, so she's accepts certain things that don't disagree with her rationall side.

It wouldn't be called 'character development' if a character keeps repeating past actions, no?

When she was like "Just a minute, I'll be right back!", I swear to God I thought she was changing into something fanservicy or so because she got the wrong idea of what Kyon was doing. I mean, I don't see how you could interpret that scene in any other way at that moment, LOL.

Haruhi's never been a prude when it comes to sexuallity, so the fact that she didn't get upset over the magazine itself isn't a surprise. However, given that this was Kyon's magazine, I would've expected her to react in a more...jealous manner.

Although Haruhi typically isn't a prude, I had the impression that it's different when Kyon is involved. I was expecting her to get jealous and go "I will not allow any perverse behavior from anyone in my brigade!" and proceed to confiscate the said porn magazine. *sigh* If only they weren't in the situation they were in, it could have lead to a pretty awkward(interesting) scenario..

So, i've registered on this forum especially for thanking personally everyone involved in the translation project. I already did it for Ultimatemegax and Yumeka, so it's now your turn:

Thank you, Zyzzyva, and Kaisos Erranon!

As for the subject matter, i have some questions:

a) I was under the impression that Kunikida had a slight crush on Sasaki. We later discover he likes Tsuruya. It's unclear: Did i read wrong, does he like both in a different way, do i need to reread something, or is the wording intentionally ambiguous?
b) Are names generally read with the kun reading? I ask because of the riddle in Yasumi's name. I didn't know that.
c) What does Koizumi mean when he says Haruhi's powers are gradually weakening? I don't think he meant it at face value. Maybe, they're proportional to her emotional instability? That would be quite terrible, and sad, if you think of the implications. But alas, I'm just as good as Kyon when it comes to understanding what Koizumi says, so i ask you some insight.

And now, for the questions only the characters themselves are likely able to answer, but asking here doesn't hurt:
d) Why didn't Suou perform something similar to what Yuki did in Disappearance to swap Haruhi's powers around? Could it be because she's radically different, like the TFEIs mentioned?
e) Why is Kyon's approval so important? Maybe it's not, and all the scenario was orchestrated by some mastermind (Mikuru (big)?), Fujiwara himself was used as a pawn? Was he important just because of the influence he has on Sasaki, maybe?

Excuse me for the wall of text. I'm constantly fearful that if i don't write stuff down, it's going to escape from my head.

a) I never got the impression that Kunikida likes Sasaki, just that he...respects her I guess. For Tsuruya however, I don't recall any hinting in the previous novels about him liking her. I don't have a problem with it or anything, it just kinda came out of nowhere ^^a

(I think this is my first post). I would like to give my heartful thanks to all people involved as well. You all did a great job from the translation down to reading format. I really appreciate your work.

My short reaction is that I feel like he's done with Sasaki for awhile. That would be a real shame IMO. I really like her character. Before that, though, let's hope the series continue first. I have a feeling that it was written such that it would be fine to stop the story here.

I recently read through volume 11 again, and besides the obvious plot points left for possible explanation in later novels - like Yasumi's flower, the exact relationship between Fujiwara and Mikuru, whether Kuyou will return or not, etc., one random thing I wasn't clear on is exactly where Haruhi was when Kuyou brought her to the Closed Space. According to the two timelines, she was either on her way home (alpha) or at Yuki's place (beta). So she must have temporarily disappeared from wherever she was around 6pm and then returned about two hours later. That would be fine if she was at Yuki's place since I'm sure Yuki would know what was going on, but if she was walking home, it would be kind of weird if she disappeared in front of people (if Itsuki and Mikuru were still with her, they probably wouldn't be surprised but other people on the street would). But then, didn't Itsuki tell Kyon in the epilogue that Haruhi was returned home after the whole ordeal? If she was at home at the time, I guess her parents weren't around or they would have been pretty shocked if she disappeared in front of them! I would say she was sleeping in bed at the time and woke up thinking it was a bad dream or something, but it was a bit too early for her to be in bed (plus she was still in her school uniform). Then again, Haruhi could have used her powers to rewrite those two hours somehow so we may never know.

Heh, I know it's a minor thing but I kept thinking about it for some reason.

Who says that Kuyou picked her from the now? It would have been easier to pick her from two hours later, when she was asleep already, then return her to two hours and a few minutes later, in a closed room, in an empty bed, with no one watching.

We already know that Kuyou has a feeble grasp on local spacetime-for once, this could be used as an advantage.

EDIT: Uhhh, you're right, she really was in her school uniform. This crushes my theory...

I would think her reaction would be more of "How can you look at other women with desire when you won't do it for me?"--or at least that would be what she is feeling under the surface.

Some names are read one way, some the other. It depends heavily on the history behind the name in question--proper names don't follow the same conventions as regular vocabulary (and in fact about 10% of the kanji in regular use are used ONLY in proper names).

Speaking of meaningful names, the "Asahi" in "Asahina" means "tomorrow" and "Mikuru" can be an alternate reading of the kanji for "mirai" meaning "future". It's very likely that Mikuru's name is an alias just like Fujiwara's.

I think that it's more a matter of Haruhi being less able to alter the world the more she becomes attached to the way that it is--in other words, her ability to change things depends on the strength of her desire to change things. In other words, she won't be subconsciously messing with things as much, but sudden severe angst (e.g. believing one of the SOS-dan to be in mortal peril) could unleash her full strength once again.

Kyon's consent is needed first and foremost because of the threat that he made at the end of "Disappearance"--namely, that if he perceives a grave enough threat, he will point Haruhi at the threat and goad her into using her power against it. In the face of this, Suou forcibly transferring Haruhi's power to someone else is like a mosquito drawing blood--extremely perilous if the host notices that she's being bitten. The Anti-SOS-dan need assurance that Kyon will not interfere in the midst of such an operation, or else it could blow up in their faces.

I don't buy this. Yuki did it while he was asleep and he only managed to fix things by using an escape route that she intentionally left for him. "John Smith" is meaningless if Kyon doesn't find out what's going on until it's too late. If Kuyou really wanted to do it there is absolutely no way that Kyon could stop her except in the most ideal of ideal circumstances (ie: she tries to do it right in front of him when he's standing next to Haruhi, and both are awake). In fact, trying to get his consent drastically lowers the odds of the plan succeeding simply because he's aware that it's a threat. Normally it's just not something he would think about. And of course trying to get his consent did blow in their faces in volume 12.

So that explanation makes no sense.

Sorry dude, but I have to disagree. There are WAY too many plot threads that are unresolved. The series is no where near resolution, and I think most of the fanbase would seriously rage if the series ended here. I know for a fact that I would be one of them.

Good point. alpha-Haruhi was probably at Yuki's apartment together with Mikuru and, well, Yuki herself. beta-Haruhi was on her way home together with Itsuki and Mikuru. But beta-Itsuki met his alpha counterpart at the school gate and entered the fated mixed Closed Space. Yuki probably didn't care if Haruhi disappeared all of a sudden, it's just where the both small Mikurus where in both timelines.

Here's my explanation for roughly the same question a page back:

Well, I agree with you actually. Just feel like it was written with such an intention in mind. Probably because Kyon said something along the line of "using all my past experiences" to figure out how to solve the problem and it kinda stuck in my head. No argument though on there are many points to explore. For example, he only barely touch on Kujou in this story arc in my opinion. I personally want to see more of Sasaki as well.

Well, the biggest plot point that sticks out in my head is that weird thing that Tsuruya dug up in the 7th novel, right on the hill that Haruhi hid those chocolates the girls made for Kyon and Koizumi. We still know NOTHING about it. I think that plot thread alone is enough reason for me to conclude that the eleventh novel was definitely NOT the end. It has Chekhov's Gun written all over it.

Have to agree with you JB, especially since Tsuruya actually mentions the thing at the end of the novel.

Anyways, I'll say here what I said on tvtropes:

Just read both parts last night.

I'm not going to lie, I was actually rather underwhelmed with most of it, I guess due to the fact that it was really depressing ... until the final chapter. Then I realized that all the wait had been worth it (also, I guess since I'd already read the data space battle the instant it got translated that it didn't have as big of an impact for me). That final chapter though, ho-ly shit.

Random thoughts:

- Itsuki is credit to team
- I find it somewhat odd that Kuyou has almost gotten Karma Houdini status, in that no one seems to care that she tried to kill Haruhi. Sure it was at Fujiwara's insistence, but it's not like she had a problem with it.
- I see that there's probably at least a couple of plot holes that have been dropped, what with the Kyon who fell through time thing that happened at the end.
- A glimpse of all three TFEI at the end, surely this won't be the last appearance of Asakura. I really can't thank the Pt B enough.
- What interests me the most though, has to be in the author's notes. Tanigawa specifically mentions a "somewhat strange thing and character" and then goes on to say "I think the character will have a damaged personality". I wonder if this is for a new series, or if this character will appear in an upcoming novel, or if he's planning to somehow even change one of the existing characters to fit this...

It was an awesome read though. I guess I wasn't in the right mindset through most of it, but that climax just changed my perspective on the whole thing and made me appreciate the buildup a lot more.
