Based on the few images I've seen, it wouldn't surprise me if it were set after the end of the series, but was mostly just Otonashi having flashbacks to things we never saw before. That way they kind of cover both areas.

Possibly; that's what Wiki suggests anyway, by stating there's both an OVA and a seperate short film providing an epilogue to the series.

Well as I said in my past few posts, there's both an OVA and another short epilogue film according to Wiki, so it's really two different things (an OVA and an epilogue film), So yes we could very well be getting both. but either way, an epilogue taking place after the series is almost guaranteed given what has been anounced so far. And as I previously stated, more YuzuruxKanade is very welcome.

Angel beats already has an OVA out. And theres the green light that they are going to make an alternate ending to angel beats.

http://mazuisubs.com/131 (note: im not sure if posting a link to a subbers site is allowed or not, though this is not for promotional purposes, if this is not allowed then please remove it for me)

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...ogue-green-lit

Anyone against the fact that they are making another alternate ending? i honestly preferred the original ending and find it rather disappointing that they making an alternate ending.... but i guess its expected. Many of its viewers were probably looking for action, and not expecting it to be able to fit in the romance/drama section. Meh.... i found the ending very very heart warming and sad. sigh....

Note: animenewsnetwork says its an epilogue, but in the description it says an alternate ending to the last segment of episode 13. isnt a ending and an epilogue different?

Also the alternate ending is out at mazui too.

Late poster is late.

We've known the OVA and alternate eeilogue were coming for over a month (check the post date of my post right above yours), and they were both already released over a week ago.

Just watched the series in 1 go, thought the ending was nice but not as good as it could have been.
I mean they seriously wrecked Otonashi character, he helped everyone else move on, but he did not want to do what he made others believe. And when he was asking Kanade to not move on because he loved her, that was just crazy selfish. Would have been better for him to confess his love, Kanade moves on, and he also moves on after helping all his friends let go of their past. But due to the epilogue we have to assume he eventually moved on. Or maybe he was the mysterious programmer with amnesia who loved explained earlier in the story, making it some strange twillight story.

The ending threw up another question about time in the afterlife world, how does Kanade who apparently has Otonashi donated heart end up in the world before him, and it seems she has been there earlier than Yuri who started SSS. That's just small quibble though.

The main disappointing part was how did the rest of the SSS crew move on, I find it hard to believe that members like Noda who seemed to really care about Yuri just moved on without waiting for Yuri, i'm sure they would have wanted to make sure she woke up ok, like the others at the end did.

Would be good if a 2nd series would be set in real world with them all bumping into each other again, but that probably won't happen, so as in the story time to move on

It is all made by Key after all, so of course its very Clannad like. Actually I thought of it it as a bit outside their style in the beginning, but then as it gets closer to the end, it becomes undeniably Key-ness-ified.

I thought this series was one of the very best that I've seen in a VERY long time. Emotional, touching, and beautiful. I crieds buckets of tears during the ending. As soon as Ayato started, I lost it.

But what's with all the Otonashi-bashing!? You guys are harsh! Come on, the poor boy spends his entire life and afterlife helping OTHERS instead of himself (to the point where it causes his own DEATH I might add!!) and when the time comes that he actually wants ONE NICE THING: to be with the girl he loves, that makes him a "selfish bastard"!? It's not like he made her stay-he just asked her! If a guy proposes to a girl, asking to spend her life with him, does that make him "a selfish bastard"!? I think NOT. D:<

I don't think he's pathetic for crying when Kaede disappeared. It was a very realistic, normal reaction when you think you might never see your love again and after all these prideful tsundere, "try-to-act-tough" characters, I thought it refreshing to see a lead character who isn't afraid to show emotions as freely as Otonashi. He was like that from the very beginning anyway....

Giving the series a 10/10. Want to own it badly on R1 DVDs.
My only complaint: There wasn't enough of it!

I finally finished the series. This series starts out mediocre and absolutely painful to watch. Episode 1-3 are so bad that I wanted to drop the series. Nevertheless, the second half of the series is what saves the series for me.

There are tons of flaws with the foundation of the story.
- The most obvious one is, if Kanade (Tenshi) created her abilities to defend against the SSS, then why did the SSS create weapons to fight against Kanade? There is a paradox here. Which event started the loop?
- If Kanade was able to easily create her abilities with the Angel Player, then why didn't the SSS also create something like that with a program? The program is so overpowered.
- The "guild" and the "guns" are very questionable. While it is not impossible, it is improbable that a bunch of students can create underground passages layered with what looks like "steel" and create weapons out of "earth."
- If Kanade was saved by Yuzuyu's heart, then why did she appear in the afterlife before Yuzuyu?
- Judging by the entire series, the existence of the SSS is absolutely pointless. All they ever do is create weapons against someone that doesn't initiate an attack; gather food either by stealing food vouchers or fish; and cause trouble for Kanade.

While I am critical of the series, there are many things I like about the series as well.
- The songs are amazing.
- The character designs are pretty good.
- I like the idea of an afterlife that allows people to experience a satisfying youth.
- I like the use of npcs to complement the afterlife world.

Good question, I assume there was some kind of incident that started this that got out of control and escalated into actual weapons.

That requires knowledge of the system. Kanade's computer was apparently one of these access points to the uber hax, and it required a lot of effort to make it there.

It's bascially just a representation of whatever they actually came up with. Kinda abstract and such. Though Angel Beats never really shied from making analogies literal. >.>

Time in the afterlife is separate from time in the real world. Kanade's regret was that she couldn't thank her savior.

Now, you might ask, why does she appear like that if she lived longer? My theory is that she got killed by a piano after she was saved by the heart.

Well, one is dead, I guess it gets boring, and Yuri died a rebel without a cause so it carried onto after life. Bascially, Yuri was just a hater.

I admit though for these, You're gonna have to ask Jun Maeda on these things; I doubt he knows either though.

Throughout a majority of the story, Yurippe was my least favorite character. I admit that my opinion of her changed after episode 12. But before that, it is like, none of her operations make sense to me. Haha.

I agree. That's one possibility. <:

Haha. I agree.

I skimmed through chapter 1 of the manga and it definitely develops the story better than the anime. I'm looking forward to reading more of it. <:

Hmm, I actually liked Yuri because in spite of all her flaws, I could understand why she was lashing out like that. Not that it makes her actions right, or even sensible though.

Then again, I guess she's most definitely the most morally ambiguous character in all of Key. But this is also the story's fault for making Kanade all pure and innocent and sparkly like she could do no wrong.

Yuzuru appeared in the afterlife after Kanade because he had to wait for all the organs he donated to die.

This was originally a joke theory, but surprisingly it fits quite well in the storyline.

When fan jokes make more sense than the show itself... don't we have a problem here?

But didn't he die first, and his organs donated shortly thereafter. He died in that tunnel moments before being rescued remember.

It is never stated that Kanade created her powers to defend against the Afterlife Battlefront. I really doubt that it was in the anime, but if anyone did say anything to imply this in the anime, then it was based on assumption.
Spoiler for additional information:

The Battlefront members didn't think of such a method (they probably didn't have the resources to do so anyways, besides, they're all idiots), however, even after they discovered Kanade's method, it has already been a long time since they've decided that her powers were granted to her from God.

They don't age or die. It's pretty safe to assume that they've all been there for a long enough amount of time to accomplish said feat.

She's waiting for Otonashi so she can say "thank you". Otonashi should not have been in the afterlife. He somehow stumbled there as a result of his amnesia.
Or God chose to put Otonashi there so then Kanade can rest in peace after such a long time. You can choose whichever explanation you want.

They all believe that Kanade is a servant of God (an Angel) and so they want to rebel at God.

why yes, yes we do... someone should write a fan fiction about this...
but this explains it pretty good. maybe she died but another of his organs went to someone else. so she lived for a while, regretted not able to say thank you, dies, goes to afterlife and waits for him. one of his organs live on someone else till they die, none of his body no longer lives so he goes to after life and you know the rest

The series was not meant to be watched alone, you're supposed to read the supplementary light novel (or the manga adaptation, for ppl who need pretty pictures). I used to complain about that too, but now it makes more sense.
Spoiler for LN spoilers, but if you've already watched the anime and want to know more, it's ok:
