Nah, they're right. The source is here:

About 20 episodes for 34 chapters. Generally they went 2 chapters per episode, like they've generally been doing since episode 49, though they just did cover 1 chapter per episode in a few places. Looks like they'll be doing 2 chapters/episode again for the most part this arc. At a guess they're hoping to be able to structure year three like year two, canon arc at the start, a little bit of filler in the middle, and canon arc at the end. If whatever the next manga arc is ends up being low 30s in chapter count, they should just be able to squeeze it in. If that's the case, they'll really need some wiggle room in how much filler they can have, hence no filler episodes or arcs now, to give them more flexibility later.

Sorry, I'm kind of fearful of the anime's future. Will there be fillers, or will the anime just end before it overtakes the manga? Because if there are fillers, at least it'd be more certain to continue the story than if it ended.
Hard to say, a lot depends on the rates, and merchandising sales. That said, Fairy Tail's one of the, if not the, biggest series in Weekly Shounen Magazine at the moment, and one of the few series they have a currently running anime adaptation for, and I think the only one that they have a long running adaption for. Fairy Tail's sales per volume more or less doubled after the anime gathered steam. Though the DVD sales have been comparatively low, it's also opened up other merchandising opportunities, though we have no way to know how successful they are. Having an actively running anime also gives them the staff in place to do things like the two OAD episodes they did. The two special edition volumes of the manga those came with appear to have sold between 80,000-100,000 each judging by the size of the dent in the regular Fairy Tail volume sales. At 1,980 yen compared to the regular volume's 440 yen. At that kind of revenue, costs would have to be exceedingly high to not make a tidy profit, and seeing as they're making a third one, with not only an original story, but one from Mashima, costs would not appear to be prohibitively high.

So in summary, it's largely in Kodansha's interest to keep the anime going for a while, so I wouldn't spend too much time worrying at this juncture if I were you.

To be honest, I'm really hoping the manga will have a time skip its current arc, because that would give the anime an excuse to keep getting made (depending on how the time skip would be set up, of course). Which leads me to wonder, how much say does Hiro Mashima have in the anime?
There's probably some contractual stipulations as to how much say Mashima has, but it probably boils down to how good a working relationship Mashima has with the director. Which as Quarkboy suggests looks to be a pretty good working relationship.

There's nothing like skimming over huge walls of text and reason that they're saying stuff in my favor to make me feel better.

hoping for this upcoming arc they throw in some filler such as the fight's we didn't get to see during the test

other than that i can't really think of anything else they can do filler wise in the canon of this arc

i hope this new arc has a clean enough cut off from that last one that if need be they can throw in a filler arc between and not be so weird. at moment it seems like they could.

Spoiler:

It seems like every major Shounen series needs to have an exam arc to pass nowadays. Anyway, looking forward to this.

I am surprised that Levy is participating for S class. She does not look like the type who can handle S class missions, as far as we've seen about her. Besides, with Gajeel there, it would look more like he is trying to pass the exam instead of her.

Also, they have introduced this Mest Gryder character out of the blue. I cannot ever remember any mention of him until now, and he is supposed to be strong enough to compete for S-class? Also, he is Mystogan's apprentice, apparently. It really does feel like this character just come out from left field all of a sudden.

The cats look like they will be left behind, except for Happy. However, I can't imagine that they will be gone for too long. Gajeel needs to show off Lily more, so I expect he will make an entrance again at some point. Also, Charles will not leave Wendy knowing that she will be in danger.

Yes, I am looking forward to seeing what will happen next.

Well, the new episode is out.

Spoiler for Episode 98:

If I'm not mistaken, the next episode will mark the end of the eighth OP and ED, which I think should technically mark the end of the season/year for Fairy Tail. Which means we're heading into season 3, folks!

They do that a lot really. We hadn't heard of Fried before the Festival Arc, and he's taking the exam too. And in the anime anyway Gildartz came out of nowhere despite being the strongest person in the guild (other than the Master). I think it's just reasonable to assume that there are a bunch of Fairy Tail members who rarely come home. Especially someone who's supposed to be Mystogan's apprentice.

@Clarste: With Gildartz, I can accept, since I think they did mention his name at some point before, and he was on a 100 year mission. Fried, I can also accept, since they were stated to have traveled a lot with Laxus on missions. He was already introduced a while back when a lot of events happened.

However, thoughout all the events that occurred, Mest did not bother to help out or participate in anything, and now he has the right to compete for S-class? It is just so jarring, but I guess I will have to accept it. They needed someone to replace Mystogan, so I guess his apprentice will have to do.

Everything depends on how author will handle Mest, maybe there is an explenation to his absence too.

I'm suprised that Levy is practicipating, she doesn't seem to have any strong magic =/

And I was always sure that Gajeel, Fried and Juvia were already S-ranks, especially Gajeel and Juvia since they were the strongest members in their ex-guild =/

Just gotta say, Cana drew the short end of the stick getting Lucy as a partner, she's almost completely useless

Great episode. For the reason alone that there was plenty of Lucy and Kana foot service. Start of the episode and the end, oh wow, the staff know how to overload the goodness.

Upcoming arc is my favourite in the manga, and i know that the anime will certainly deliver in all aspects. It's going to be an explosive couple of months.

Now we just have to see how much spoiler content the new OP will feature.

Hardly. Anyone who's watched the anime or read the manga to this point knows that Lucy is far from useless.

Gajeel was not even part of the four strongest in the last guild, so it is questionable if he is S-rank.

I am not so sure about that. Yes, she might have lost her most powerful fighting celestrial, but she has the ability to call out multiple keys at a time. Furthermore, she has that universal explosion power thing. Now, she also has that whip.

If anything, I believe this arc will focus on how Kana becomes the next S-rank, since it seems very important that she does so.

Gajeel, the most formidable member of Phantom Lord after Jose and before Element 4, not an S-Class?

Interesting to see Lily able to stay in his original body for a brief period. Think the Elfman and Evergreen team is the weirdest one. This Mest guy is intriguing. Lol Loke is working with Gray. What tease with Cana's story, hope we find out the real reason that made Lucy want to help her. Going through Erza, Mira, and Gildartz is cray tough. Nice to see Charla use her power now. So that guy who was after Natsu is going to cause some problems. Gajeel and Levy pair was nice to see.

Of course she isn't. Who else would give us the levels of fanservice we expect from Lucy?

Oh and speaking of fanservice it looks like were in for some Virgo fanservice next week. Me gusta.

I'm pretty sure Gajeel was S-rank back in Phantom Lord, but Fairy Tail has its own standards. Remember, this isn't like an official designation by the government or anything, it's just up to each individual guild who they let take S-rank jobs alone. Natsu managed to steal an S-rank flyer and it's not like the other party refused him or anything. I'd imagine that Fairy Tail has higher standards because they care more.

Hmmm... I had to research and go back to episode 21 where they first mentioned Gajeel and the Element 4. It was mentioned that the Element 4 (Juvia) were S-class in that guild. They did mention that Gajeel is a huge concern, although no mention that he was S-class.

I guess it would be possible, but not as far as I can tell from information from the anime. Either way, as Clarste mentioned, Fairy Tale might have a different standard from Phantom.
