.TS Raw

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to put this post, but here it goes.

I managed to get my grubby hands on an HD .TS raw. The thing that confused me about it was that it was 1440 x 1080, yet it had a 16:9 aspect ratio . Did I do something wrong, or is that normal? As far as I knew, 1440 x 1080 was generally associated with full screen.

1440x1080 uses rectangular pixels, so it is full 16:9. 1920x1080 uses square pixels.

So, if I'm understanding correctly. 1440 x 1080 16:9 is a 'true' aspect ratio?

Not sure what you mean with "true" aspect ratio, so i am going to say yes. 1440x1080 is a valid format, using rectangular pixels with a ratio of 1.33:1. If you do the calculation it will make some sense. Each pixel is 1.33 wide, multiply it with 1440 pixels and you get 1920 and hence you get a 16:9 image. Hope that help.
1440x1080i is used by many broadcasters, The BBC uses it for its HD channel in the UK, i hear france and japan uses it as well.

As Sides says, there's a difference between the aspect ratio of the encoded image and the aspect ratio of the displayed picture. Pixels need not necessarily be square. If it's an anime raw it's pretty much guaranteed to have a DAR of 16:9, since basically all terrestrial HD channels in Japan are 16:9 and use 1440x1080.
