Is she the heroine? She's just doing what she needs to IMO, like most of the other characters. She has the advantage that the person she wants to crush is already dead (her grandfather), so that saves her the trouble of becoming a crazy murderer, but in the end there's no much difference between her and, say, Yuri.

I knew if I read the novel chapter corresponding to this episode I would be frustrated at what was left out...especially concerning Shouma. The anime just really does not reflect his self doubt well at all.
But anyways other than that really good episode. Ishida Akira did a great job as Tabuki here. He did the monotone voice perfectly. Actually that whole scene with Yuri showing the separation between them was really well done. Now we can see it's only Momoka that joins them & really not by much. It was also lovely to get interaction between the siblings and also Himari & Ringo again. I missed that. Finally I loved the epic show down between Yuri & Masako. Oh but was anyone else creeped out by that end card?

What a coincidence i had takoyaki today as well. Something bad is about to happen. Looks like Tabuki beat Yuri to the punch. Definitely rooting for Natsume now after seeing what Yuri wanted to do. Doubt Kanba and Shouma will look for her on a construction site. Let's hope Ringo can save the day. So did Tabuki imply that Momoka tried to stop their parents and paid for it with her life?

But she doesn't actually. The last episode implied that she is not going to work for Sanetoshi..hence the "I am not getting on that train" line.
But I agree while Masako is not an antagonist (at least not against the Takakura's). She is also not a heroine. She has her own objective just like everyone else.

That penguin animation during the next episode preview was beyond epic
I would think everyone saw it coming that Tabuki wasn't over his hatred for the Takakuras. The dialogue in that showdown between Masako and Yuri is freaking epic. The scene between Yuri and Tabuki was very melancholic but I think it also painted a thin hope that they're not really that separated and could get together if they (read: Tabuki) were more honest with their feelings. Tabuki kind of needs to not act like the refined gentleman Yuri perceives him as for it to work imo but I don't know if Tabuki can even do that or if he will ever even want to. Not much else to speak of in the episode but those bits were enough to make it perfect.

Oh my. That survival strategy. *A* It was better than in the novel. I was pretty surprised by it actually.
Himari was especially cute in this episode! I mean she's always been cute, but I think she was at her cutest in this episode. Wonder what made Tabuki change his mind? I think this upcoming week I'm going on spoiler lockdown. (We'll see how long that lasts... XD) Following the novel was fun, but it took all the surprise out of it.

On the whole, Episode 17 was pretty good. It started to refocus the story a bit after the wild twists and turns of the past few episodes.
This episode was a good one for Shouma and Himari, as both came off well here, and I think that was important for both of them. Kanba's attitude towards his brother seemed excessively harsh to me in this episode, but I suppose it's in-character. Some nice scenes, some sharp dialogue, Himari and Ringo acting moe was nice (for now at least), and a well-executed cliffhanger. It wasn't anything fantastic to me, but it was good and solid. 8/10 for this episode. She seemed a bit nervous when talking to Yuri so I think she has some vague recollections of what happened that night, and hence some worrisome fragmentary memories. However, she mostly remembers enjoying the evening with Yuri, and obviously Ringo came out of it fine. So on the whole it's a good memory for her, and she still likes Yuri, but probably trusts her a little bit less than before.

In the other parts I think it was just good natured teasing. And of course Kanba would take charge of the Himari search, that is just his nature. edit: Well Kazu answered about Ringo and I guess we don't all have to say the same thing.
