That and there are a lot of people on unemployment or on minimum wage, which makes paying the minimums looks good when you can't pay the max every month.

(I use to pay the max every month until such time as I could not and stand to be able to keep paying monthly expenses over a longer period of time. So one coasts at minimums until one gets employed again, and yet remains able to survive like one was use to while working).

Also there is an assurance that it will be paid off...eventually. Before it was just the intrest and you would never pay it off.

UK establishes £1 million Queen Elizabeth Engineering Prize.

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, commented: "I am delighted that the Queen has put her name to this prestigious prize, which I hope will carry the same stature as the Nobel Prizes."

"For too long Britain's economy has been over-reliant on consumer debt and financial services. We want to rebalance the economy so that Britain makes things again - high-skilled, high-value manufacturing and engineering should be a central part of our long-term future."

The prize will be awarded to an individual or team of up to 3 engineers from anywhere in the world for extraordinary contribution to engineering. It will be a biannual award.

Commenting on the prize, Lord Browne said engineering "underpins every aspect of our lives", adding that it forms a "bridge between scientific discovery and commercial application".

He added: "Too often the engineers behind the most brilliant innovations remain hidden. The Queen Elizabeth Prize aims to change that. It will celebrate, on an international scale, the very best engineering in the world."

I for one think this is a great development, and I can't think of a better country then the UK to give such a prize, given their historic ties at the forefront of the field. Engineering is just as important as science, but it lacked any big high profile prizes. Hopefully it will do as well as the organizers hope. Biannual is frequent, but engineering is a pretty big field.

I dislike when corporations pull these kinds of stunts just to make a buck.
It gives verbal ammunition to politicians to call for the regulation of video games.
We've seen that kind of nonsense before over games like Grand Theft Auto, Doom (back in the 1990s), and Silent Hill.

There were a lot of things that were supposed to save Europe from potential financial Armageddon. Chief among them is the EFSF, or European Financial Stability Facility.

In the spring of 2010, European finance ministers announced the facility’s formation with great fanfare. In its inaugural report, Standard & Poor’s described the EFSF as the “cornerstone of the EU’s strategy to restore financial stability to the euro zone sovereign debt market.” The facility itself said in an October 2011 date presentation that its mission is to “safeguard financial stability in Europe.”

That of course hasn’t happened. And the evidence suggests that the EFSF may have only exacerbated the problems.
