sports anime

As the title says i'm looking for an anime with a sport as the main subject. I consider myself a fan of all sports, but i have never seen an anime about sports, so i thought i should give it a try.

If you like down-to-earth sports anime without some ridiculous moves and techniques, you may want to watch anime like Whistle, Okiku Furikabutte and Wild Striker.

If you like flashy moves & techniques in your sports anime, you may watch something like Eyeshield 21, Captain Tsubasa, or Tennis no Ojisama (Prince of Tennis).

Hmm ... Moshidora (baseball) and Giant Killing (soccer) come to mind most immediately, Hikaru no Go (Go) and Saki (mahjong) are kinda like the general structure of sports anime methinks, although they are definitely not "full contact" like the first two examples, perhaps.

Although I have not seen it you might try Yawara - about a girl on a Judo team. Have been curious about that one myself.

The jewel of this genre is SLAM DUNK (Unless older animation frightens you, which I hope it wouldn't because it's great)...Also add Hajime No Ippo (Boxing) to the top teir...It's comical, serious, realistic in it's themes, and slice of life all at the same time...Then there's the boxing which is just scary awesome at times...

Seconding Eyesheild 21 aswell...If the DBZ characters played football, they might lose to the demons^^...

Does Cross Game (baseball, comedy, romance) count? If not, it should.

Cross Game is the best series suggested so far, but I don't think sports is the main focus. I'd still recommend it though. Here are a few other good options:

Capeta - Motorsports. Very under the radar, but quite excellent. I'm not a racing guy and I loved it.

Major - Baseball. Very much the story of one hero with exceptional talent and will, so not an underdog tale, but at it's best it's great.

Over Drive - A quirky and underrated series about cycling.

If more of sports than anything else, Slam Dunk will likely be the one that will always be compared to.

But if you don't mind sports not being the sole center of attention, Cross Game is your best bet.

Big Wind Up as others have already suggested its baseball
Prince of Tennis was good too especially the finals OVA
Eyeshield 21 although after watching the anime go finish the story in the manga the manga has an awesome art and its complete now and the ending is very good too, Eyeshield21 is about american football
Captain Tsubasa Road to Dream is cool too but if you got the motivation to watch long series then watch the original Captain Tsubasa this is about soccer
One Outs its a baseball anime but more about mind game like Death Note

Cross Game & Big Wind Up are my two favorites for a more traditional sports series

For non-traditional sports I recommend Hikaru no Go and Chihayafuru.

I would definitely recommend Cross Game. its by far one of the best sports anime ever made.

there is also this soccer anime coming out for the winter season. by the looks of it, it looks very Adachi-esque. its called Area no Kishi
