I also suggest him to watch Gintama. It's a historical comedy about a former samurai and its new friends who fights against aliens while doing funny things. It's funny, it's full of parody. The first ten episodes are not really funny but it gives you some hints. As the story progresses, the humour becomes really funny ! It's appreciated by many people and it stoods out other action shounen titles.

If you're looking for a good comedy (with some romance, kinda like school rumble romance in the sense that it adds to the humour while still being there) you should check out Seto no Hanayome. It's about a boy who gets stuck with a mermaid after being saved by her while he was drowning. I almost died laughing at multiple points because it's so damn funny. Watched it multiple times and can still get a good laugh out of it.

Something got lost in translation, I'm afraid. Twelve Kingdoms is one of my all time favorite shows, but I'd never call it an exemplar of "crazy humor." If there's a comedy-drama continuum, I'd put Twelve Kingdoms far toward the drama end.

If you'd like to see an historically-based series that has wacky humor, a serious subtext, and great characters, I recommend Oh! Edo Rocket. There's also a lot of humor in Hyouge Mono, but given its need to be historically accurate (in the large, not in the details), its humor is more subtle but equally effective.
