I'd personally like to see more harems where the male protagonist gets into several awkward situations regularly. Then around the *middle* of the series, he finally gives in to one girl and the two hook up permanently. The remaining part of the series would show their blossoming relationship while the other girls learn to Deal With It™. Clannad did this approach quite well (minus the sexy aspect for the most part).
Case in point: Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon. After the first major story arc of the series, the main pair hooks up with each other. The main lead is not dense, and in fact, a massive pervert who has groped a handful (lol) of girls' breasts during the course of the 12-episode series. Before the Big Confession, the girls who appear to be very close to the main lead actually helps out in his preparation.

Another is probably High School DxD. Although the reason might be spoilers.

Well it also depends on the guy. Some guys are more straight laced in their morals than others. The marriage first group. Others think they are inadequate and brush off the advances as a prank or tease (The "no girl should want me" group). Other are just not ready or have no clue what to do and basically remain "dense" as a defensive messure.

The reason is, is for story purposes. You can't really have a harem show if the guy just picks one girl.

Of course then you have examples like School Days and we all know how that ended up.

Oh, this reminded me of Rosario+Vampire... It's so obvious to the other girls who the couples are, but the pursuit continues...

Or an ominbus series like Amagami SS or Yosuga No Sora, but I don't think those really count...

Because most Anime are based on comics for kids. Or games and novels without mature labeling.

The reason why when a dude gets a chance to get lucky and pushes it away? Very simple, and I'm sure it's already been said:

If he did go with her (and assuming she didn't back out at the last second), it would be called a hentai, and be a one-shot (or be a mutli-chapter hentai)... and those don't make a whole lot of money. Because in order to make money, the tension still has to be there, to draw the viewer and have them wonder "what's this guy going to do?" And usually, if a couple does elope, then other drama has to be added in...

Oh wow. Have you ever watched movies where a couple of characters have sex? You don't always see a level of explicitness that is seen in porn. It has happened in countless non-porn anime as well.

And if you have watched Yosuga no Sora, you'd know just the kind of animated sex that you can get away with showing on late-night TV and still get BD sales.

Your second point still stands, though.

Read Booker's "The Seven Basic Plots" for some insight on the symbolic nature of love interests in media aimed at men and you'll see why a male character will reject willing and offering females.

You'll also see why accepting such offers inevitably leads to the School Days ending.

Girls basically hates Playboys especially after they've given everything and the guys still doesn't values it.

Like someone said, go watch White Album, it develops romance in a unusual way, even though Classified Info isn't a big fan of stuff that was very popular in Japan (idols, otaku culture...).

It's obvious that the first reason to reject willing girls is for the plot sake, but i don't consider it a valid enough reason; i would avoid such event from happening in the first place. I'd prefer to see a girl not teasing the boy, and therefore with nothing happening, instead of a willing girl being rejected and with nothing happening. I hope you get what i mean.

I have to partially disagree with this: if the boy goes with only the same girl, i don't see any problem at all. I agree that if the boy goes with every female spreading her legs, he'll end up like makoto, but that's a different story.

According to what i watched so far, most of male characters tend to stick with one girl in particular, and if they ever confessed to her, they are not going to betray her (It will eventually happen that the girl misunderstands the boy, like when she sees the boy in an embarassing situation with another woman, even tho the boy was just "unlucky", just do add some drama and troubles, but i haven't seen any boy betraying her beloved one. The only time i saw such thing was in School Days, where the protagonist was screwed up)

Don't think that everything would lead to a "School days" ending. I actually have a counter example, that is Kissxsis, even tho the anime is a bit strange: the boy actually accepts his (not-blood-related) sisters's treatings, even tho he tries to refuse at the beginning, eventually getting used to it. The manga is still ongoing, but it's kinda clear that the boy cares the most for his sisters, beside that he didn't go with any other female(even tho 3 other girls are after him)

So, the point of this topic is: why do they make girls tease the boy, when the boy is going to reject them for no rational reason if not the plot's sake(that shouldn't even be counted as a reason, under the point of view of the spectator)? You say to keep up the tension? They could do it by simply create embarrassing situations, like when the boy falls on the girl, or when there is dark, and after the light turns on, they happen to have their faces being very close or hugging each other because the girl is scared of something, and the likes. This is as far as the romance is some light and "calm" story.

In the case of Hidan no Aria, the "tension" is always up because of the action, embarrassing situations with Kinji sticking his face to Aria's tits because he fell, Riko's teasing, and Reki's kidnapping. It's true that
Spoiler for spoils about the plot:

[mod edit...] you don't understand the point I was making.

Your complaint is that it doesn't match real life. The point Booker makes is that stories are also symbolic, and that the symbolism of a female love interest is at odds with easy sexuality, and that inserting that symbolism into the story inevitably drives a story towards a tragic end.

^ I never thought of that.

Or the male lead has a sickness that may contaminate people (or a curse or something)

Why does everybody think that every anime where the guy goes and grabs several girls will end up like School Days? I mean, come on, I could think of so many other possible endings for that in one minute...hell, like I said before, I seen people like Makoto in real life. Ok, maybe with a much higher social rank, but they just grabbed every girl every chance they got...and that literally continued until they were out of high school (hell, I won't be surprised if they went into college unchanged.) It's not uncommon at all around here for that to happen. Sure, anime is entertainment and not real life, but using someone like Makoto without some violent ending isn't that hard.

Anyway, like I said before...most harem leads are mentally confused fucks that really don't know what they should do. Harem leads are rarely good examples of "morals". A lot of them would love to fuck every girl every chance they get too...problem is that they are too confused to do so. I would actually love to see more anime like School Days...tho that may have to do with personal experiences.

What's wrong with that dude? Ugay?
Because straight men can't possibly show any discretion whatsoever. Got it.

Here's the thing: the more willing a girl is, especially right off the bat, the less desirable she is. I don't want to have someone falling over herself to give it away. At best she's channeling her attraction inappropriately; at worst she has a crippling obsession that's going to hurt her and everyone she targets.

I say this as a red-blooded male who HAS had girls talk about nothing but sex with him. It's tiring! You wonder, "Doesn't she think about anything else?" Besides, if the girl is just going to give it away, what's the point? Call me old-fashioned, but sex should be more than "you want me so let's do it." There should be feeling and intimacy there. Otherwise, what the heck are you going to gain that you can't just do yourself?

Pushing away a girl who is willingly to have intercourse is not a show of dislike....its more of a show of respect. All of us guys must know that... Respecting her as a female, not taking advantage of the situation. That's a sign of a true gentleman..
