Wasn't quite sure what to take from the episode. It didn't exactly wow me and the characters did not make much of an impression. I was a bit irked by Medaka's superiority complex, but that was about it.

I hate to break it to you but the main story line won't likely begin til around episode 6. Medaka has to recruit 2 other members to the student council before it happens. But don't worry it gets better from that point on.

1st ep was pretty good. followed the manga completely while adding something of their own(that gigantic medaka when talking to the delinquents). 8/10

but after seeing medaka say "those" words again, felt like hitting her in the face.

I wasn't initially planning to watch this, but I was bored today so I figured why not check it out? I ended up enjoying it quite a bit so I'm glad I did. Medaka is a complete Mary Sue, but it is obviously 100% intentional, so it could lead to something interesting. Oh, and her tits are nice (my eyes were constantly drawn to them

).

As of now, it does seem like it's a cross between Haruhu and Sket Dance, but going by all these comments from manga readers, it appears that's not really the case. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I gave the first episode a shot and so far I'm kind of 'meh' about it, although I can't really explain why. I doubt I'll drop this, as I rarely drop any show, so we'll see what happens in subsequent episodes.

This show is like Reborn or Negima.

You have to sit through a beginning that is nothing like the rest of the show. Tough to tell your friends to watch a show when you know they will be bored out of their mind for the first 10 episodes.

The manga started as a generic school comedy with little serious moments, but after a sudden turn of events, it suddenly became an action manga with some comedy elements.
It's like a tsundere girl started out as aloof and abrasive, but after a sudden turn of events, she suddenly became sweet and nice despite having some lovey dovey moments.

Just for context on just WHY this happened, the manga was this close to being cancelled due to low rankings. The shift to a straight shounen battle manga was what it did to survive. Even then it was on the brink for a while, until it hit a certain arc...

Then it became popular enough to avoid being cancelled, which is where we get the Nisioisin wordplay and META shenanigans we know and love.

The Minus Arc is the "Kyoto Arc" of this manga, it introduced the overwhelming fan fav of the manga and tweaked the prior arcs mix to perfection, with a great dash of meta included. Shame it probably won't get animated unless the backers behind this don't care about sales, like with Bakuman... problem is this is a late night anime.

Medaka acts like Haruhi, apart from being more human, but hard to take a president wearing like that seriously

the characters are likable and the story seems fun, i dont mind the little fan service too

I really don't think any of the developments/"genre switches" in Medaka Box weren't planned. The groundwork/basis for the next major arc is always pretty clearly telegraphed. The only thing I can't figure out is why Nishio stuck to the initial school arc for so long in the first place...but I remember by the 11th chapter I was already saying "this is really boring; it should/will turn into a battle manga any day now".

There's also the point I brought up in the manga thread recently that Nishio is a humongous JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fan, which is a classic supernatural/action shounen. On top of that add that I don't think that any of Nishio's other works have been school life/slice of life before.

I think the second arc will probably when the Medaka vs. Haruhi comparisons simply end. Because the more "dramatic"/"serious" parts of the two series have completely different focuses and tones...the only loose connection you can make at the start of the story is by equating Zenkichi with Kyon.

I don't see where the Haruhi connection even comes in in the first place. Even if they're both "oddly talented", their motivations are completely different. Haruhi is fundamentally sort of selfish, looking to make her own life interesting while ignoring others who don't meet her standards, while Medaka is fundamentally selfless, living for others regardless of or even despite their circumstances. That's a huge distinction that you can make from the very first chapter.

Yeah, but they're both schoolgirls with an armband fetish who believe life should be like in the movies and who drag a reluctant tsundere boy into adventures.

Haruhi is basically "God"... as we all know it... so it wasn't much of a competition...

Medaka isn't "really" a God...

I won't give details on characters, since they'll all be told in the anime (if it follows the manga exactly)

BTW, up to now, people's reaction is exactly as predicted, LOL... Watching the Forum seems much more fun than watching the Anime itself.

The first episode looks to be taking most of the time introducing the characters and basic plot outline, so I'll forgive it for not exactly delivering in the style department. The one thing I keep hearing wherever I go is "stick with it, it gets better." It's not as if it's all that bad to begin with, so I'm in for the time being.

yeah pretty much.
I dont read reborn but its like negima in a way. both start out pretty average normal, then shifts to shounen action. and then slowly goes back to their roots.

they're treated as "god" and fairly much do whatever they want. medaka gets a bit more retribution than haruhi though, for good reasons.
