Currently airing shows.

Ugh, I was away for a while and didn't keep up with the news etc. I wish to start watching good shows this season but I hear there are many. I kind of want to touch base with the popular opinion before I start just so I have some hype to work with.

With that being said, please do tell what shows you are watching this season, what you really like and what you really don't like (skip the mediocre ones unless you feel like they need a mention) and why. In as much detail as you wish. Thanks.

It depends on what you like really.

I think that Sakamichi no Apollon and Uchuu Kyoudai are really good shows that may be overshadowed by hyped shounen like Accel World and Medaka Box and The Undead Big 3(Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka? of The Dead, Sankarea and Tasogare Otome X Amnesia). Not that those shounen series are bad or anything.

There are comedy shows of all types: frenetic(Haiyore! Nyaruko-san), mellow(Shirokuma Cafe) and somewhere in between (Upotte)

I'm watching three shows, all on Crunchyroll:

Tsuritama - Nakamura Kenji's weird take on fishing
Sakamichi no Apollon ("Kids on the Slope") - Watanabe and Kanno join forces again for a drama about teens in the 1960's who like jazz

Both of those are from noitaminA. Only one episode has been shown in Japan and available to Crunchy members right now. Public viewing on a week's delay basis begins on Thursday of this week.

I'm also watching Uchuu Kyoudai ("Space Brothers") about two brothers in 2025 who want to be astronauts. Episode three appeared last Saturday for members.

It's been quite a while since I could find three shows worth watching in a single season. I watched an episode of Accel World and one of Zetman and dropped them both.

I plan to give Polar Bear Cafe and Folktales from Japan a try soon.

You can use this to see which shows are currently airing: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl...nime.year=2012

I am only watching these three series right now.
- Fate/Zero season 2
- Sankarea
- Lupin III

I will add more series once I clear off some of my backlog. (I might drop Sankarea though; I like the manga way more than the anime.)

Not exactly. If it was what I wanted, I wouldn't have created this thread. I don't want general impressions, I just want hype, both good and bad. And I generally prefer regulars in the suggestions section more than the critics in the general impressions thread. It's probably the redundant detail.

Regardless, thanks for the suggestions guys.

I watched the new Lupin III and I must say I quite like it.

I got stalled with Fate|Zero in the first season partly because I couldn't stand how lacking it felt compared to the LN so I don't think I will try the second season anytime soon but I just might.

Trying the rest of them now.

I'm currently watching Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?, Medaka Box and Sengoku Collection, but Medaka Box is worth watching, even though the beginning is rather comedic and slow before going action-themed.

I'm liking this season a lot. I'm quitting shows I'd have watched last season out of sheer desperation for something to watch.

My top tear would be:

Mystery Girlfriend X: Portraying the gross saliva exchange in a matter of fact manner; quirky characters; retro style that works; Urabe's voice actor is brilliant; Danny Elfmanesque soundtrack. This is the winner of the season.

Sankarea: It's got a unique feel to it; it's using zombification as a sort of metaphor for caged in emotions. It comes in three part: watching zombie flicks, adolescent zombie fantasies, and a reflection what death actually means. What I was afraid of when I heard about the concept was that it would be some sort of pact: but "zombification" seems to mean different things to different characters. I'm really curious to see what happens when reality catches up with them.

Sakamichi no Apollon: You'll be watching this mostly for the atmosphere; I've only seen the first episode, but they're using music, weather, etc. to great effect. This is going to be a mood piece, as jazz is supposed to be. (I'm not a fan of jazz, but this works for me.)

Shirokuma Café: Lowkeye quirky humour. The animals look like animals, and behave like lunatic humans in a suit. There are real humans interspersed, and Panda works as part-time Panda in a zoo. You're obviously not supposed to think this through. Just switch off, lean back, relax and enjoy.

Most of the other shows I'm watching are better than expected, too.

I watched quite a few shows now and I must say I am indeed in agreement that this season has quite a few treats.

I loved the first episode of Lupin III. Quite raunchy and just all around awesome. Second episode felt a bit like forced melodrama but we'll see.

Tsuritama feels like it's just my type of show (Mushishi, Mononoke, The Tatami Galaxy, House of Five Leaves, Kuchu Buranko etc.) but just the first episode might be too early to tell.

Sakamichi no Apollon is definitely my type of show sans the apparent feelings the protagonist(?) has for the iinchou-san. Generally not fond of seeing a guy fall for a girl (or vice versa) so easily (common as it apparently is) and especially not fond of having to watch the hints for the all too common romantic subplot(?) in what otherwise feels like shaping up to be a rare masterpiece. Let's just say I have a bad feeling, for whatever reason. I hope to be surprised nonetheless.

Those three would be my pick for the favorites thus far. Have yet to watch Uchuu Kyoudai.

Jormungand left me unsure of how I feel about it. I like the characters, I think, but I don't know if I like the show overall or not. It's probably going to take a while for me to figure out either which way.

Polar Bear Cafe overdoes its puns, although that's definitely intentional. Nonetheless, I haven't laughed nearly as much from anything ever as I did when the Pandas started their "service, service" routine for the elementary school kids. I suppose I am a kid at heart, after all. Gonna watch it here and there.

Sankarea is interesting but kind of feels way too similar to other romantic titles. They have, however, brought up some significantly mature issues and I hope to see a mature handling. Nothing gets on my nerves as much a show bringing up mature issues, being all melodramatic about it then ending it with a comedic routine for gigs.

Haiyore! NyarIKO-San is kinda absurd at first look but is also very lighthearted and very similar to other recent romantic titles in essence. I am going to watch it just for the heck of it whenever I have time.

Tasogare Otome X Amnesia is worth watching just for Yukko much like Death Note is worth watching just for Light.

Accel world is right at home for a has been MMORPG nerd. Not to mention I am quite interested in possibly researching augmented reality, exactly for the purpose of enhanced gaming, so yeah.

Acchi Kocchi is the only show among the ones I watched thus far that I am definitely dropping and not picking up at a later date. And it's not because it's bad but because I feel like I have already seen everything the show is going to offer in the two episodes I did watch.

Still gotta see the rest of them.

I assume you've seen Dennou Coil but, on the unlikely chance you haven't, go watch it now. Iso write the script for Coil a couple of decades before Google's "Glass" project, though he missed the aspect of the glasses that so motivates Google -- their ability to put ads in front of your eyeballs.
