You might be interested in following Jormungand. It's kinda similar to Phantom:Requeim for the Phantom.

To Aqua Knight, I find the third one in my list, and it's called Chaos;Head : the 2008 12-episode supernatural mystery TV anime is focused on Takumi, a highschool student obsessed with 2D girls. One day, while he's playing around Internet, he discovers a murder involving a guy getting staked by swords. For some reasons that are unknown, Takumi runs off and suddenly find a girl who's "supposed" to know him. It's a serious series with dark atmosphere, some action, lot of mystery, some romance and I'll notice you that there's no fanservice and comedy in it. Also, it's created by the same company who produced Steins;Gate (Nitro+ and 5pb), however, you need to start watching the latter before you are being prepared for Chaos;Head.

Try Seikon no Qwaser! Lots of action, dark atmosphere and back story, lots of fan service, romance, and an awesome male protagonist.

I totally recommend it.

Second Seikon no Qwaser : even though it has lot of comedy, romance and fanservice, it still contains dark atmosphere in it.

Still got to be the best mecha series of all time. I like my mecha serious and RahX isnt perfect in that it doesn't focus quite enough on the mecha themselves and their specs (but what series does?) in the same way Evangellion didn't.

I haven't read all of the suggestions so far but what comes to my mind with action:

- Jormungand (currently airing)

- Canaan
- Deadman Wonderland
- mirai nikki
- Zetman (currently airing)
- Getbackers
- Baccano
- Shiki ( vampires, but not really the normal kind, it's great)
- Kara no Kyoukai (7 ova's , really worth watching)
- shingetsutsan tsukihimi (vampires, but not exactly what you'd expect again)
- Basilisk

There should be something in here that'll fit your taste.

Can't believe no one mentioned Kurozuka...or is am I the only one who likes it?

I thought Kurozuka started strong then lost its way around the midpoint. I had the same reaction to Mnemosyne, which would also qualify for this thread except for having a female protagonist.

It gets really confusing towards the end with all the scientific stuff, so perhaps some ppl might not like the ambiguous link between vampirism and science.

hajime no ippo has good action and is serious when it needs to be but it can also can be funny too.the characters are also enjoyable especially takamura he is funny as hell.
