I've recently encountered something strange.
Now, I've been playing a few games with some AI opponents on my iPhone lately, and in one of my games, the dealer player completed its hand on the very first turn. Surprised, I examined the winning hand, but I didn't recognize the yaku. After a bit of research, I identified it to be something called a "shiisanbudoo" or "thirteen unrelated tiles" hand. Now for my question: Based on several sources, that particular hand was listed as a yakuman. However, the hand only counted as a mangan according to the score counting in the game. Is that the convention in usual games?

And you got it ln like the 7th go around, when people (going by your discards) should have started suspecting you were going for a terminals hand normally they wouldn't fathom you were on Yakuman tenpai.

I did discard a 9s though, so I really don't think my hand could be read that easily this early on, and the person who discarded the 9m was probably frustrated that after scoring two consecutive kans he drew a useless tile... |

Man. With a start hand like that, I woulda shot for the Junchan, by which you were easily set up for. Naturally, that changed when the 9-pin came in.
![]() And lol. That last 9-wan came out of the dead wall.

Well, that person asked to die.
![]() Granted, I've done something like that with live tiles - but - I knew the consequences. But I dared it, when I dropped a haku tile in a similar situation.

Granted, a Shousangen, Yakuhai x 2, Toitoi, Honitsu hand would have been perfectly fine too, but the guy had to discard the haku when I already 2 open pons on the chun and hatsu. I was almost afraid I wasn't going to make it since the two players beside me declared riichi.
Well, anyway, I pray that I never fall victim to a direct hit yakuman.

Nice having a game archive: that way, I can go back to it whenever:

![]() Then again, I've dished a direct hit dealer double yakuman once. With that in mind, I managed to laugh this case of getting hit off fairly well.

The last hand of this game kind of got me thinking - is there something I could've done to try to deal into the right hand side without risking dealing into the dealer instead? The only way I saw (and can see right now) is to play a tile the left hand player played before the right hand player declared Riichi, but I didn't have any of those tiles. Or maybe I should've played more aggressively and not bailed? Thought it's hard to justify that when I was still sanshanten when the Riichi happened. Hmm... |

Standard thinking with being in the lead in the last hand. You certainly went into full defense mode, as many players would and should do. Sadly. Playing into the right-player would have won the game for you. Man, that sucks. ![]() So. The discard reading question here is: How can you tell the value of one hand vs another - just by reading the discards?

I didn't make any assumptions about hand value. When I thought about dealing into the right hand player purposely, I was working with the assumption that I wouldn't have went to 2nd place even if I deal into a haneman of the right hand player, but if I deal into the left hand player he gets to renchan, even if it's a small hand (I was expecting a half flush honestly, but I played it safe anyways).
