If you using a rifle or even a handgun with an extremely high muzzle velocity, remember the round will only need to pass near the vital regions to cause excessive trauma due to the shock wave of the impact.

Sometimes the worst of a bullet wound isn't even the wound canal but the flesh that's been effected the the ripple of the bullet's passing.

You would be right. People don't just "fall down and be still" like they do in movie and tv. And as grylsyjaeger says, a high velocity or large caliber does more damage from shock waves than from simple projectile flight damage.

And.... yeah, I'm not liking where this conversation is going.

Front : Between the eyes if it is a high velocity, low stopping power weapon (9mm or .22), or at the top of the neck under the chin. Low velocity, high stopping power (.38 or so in pistol caliber), aim for the forehead, the shock will rock the brain and render it comatose.

I believe those who fired a 12-g shotgun with buckshot here can vindicate me on its destructive power within 25m. Zombie or human, the one on the receiving end can easily have a body part blown off at close range, or have his holes punched through his body by the sheer force of each pellet.

At close range, the pellet cloud is effectively an expanding solid mass. Once it hits something, the pellets then each take slightly different trajectories depending on what each pellet struck.
