Could the guy in the cloak be Kane's brother that someone put up art for earier? wasn't he with the Galactic Empire? Thus could the Gamactic Empire be getting directly involved in keeping Marika save?

Also it will be interesting to see just what group is targeting Marika from the outside, and if it has anything to do with the high school, the tournament, or the administration group that called on Show for some illegal activities to counter the High School Yacht Club's five year old reputation.

And I am very curious what that weapon in the bow is. That was not the standard main guns firing. but that was not powerful enough to be a typical Wave Motion Gun weapon (those things can destroy continents the size of Europe.)

Also, regarding that mysterious bow gun, I'm wondering if that was at full or minimal power. I mean, was that the extent of damage it could do? This seems unlikely, because that would mean that it's relatively useless. Just how much was it held back?

For the weapon that launches Bentenmaru supersonic waves probably is a super powerful weapon that can destroy a continant but there they probably "dropped" the power level right?

Kane said it was a prank of some sort. Misa was having trouble holding the ship steady at station keeping in low orbit. Part of the crew was questioning if this was a good idea, the rest said, Kane asked for it.

Well as I said gun is very powerful and must be so even if they have halved the power, the attack would still be as powerful but making up for not destroying the beach and girls hurt but despite this they were afraid still understandably

The Law of Conservation of Characters states that this should be so.

Also, I'd wager that the Galactic Empire has an overt rule that lets its members run themselves the way they do, and then has operatives that do not exist eliminating threats to the Empire from the shadows. This man, "Abel", could be one of them, and he's definitely not alone.

Speculation time!

I'd say its a vengeful parent who wants to wreck Hakuoh for one of their graduated members crashing into another dinghy and spraining her daughter's wrist back in the old tournament. Just so happens that said parent is a committee member of the judging board.

When in actual fact, both girls involved in the accident have become best friends in Space University, and that the Hakuoh senior deliberately crashed into the other girl to save her life.

So after some talking, the conflict ends and they all have parfaits. Everything ends well if you're a pirate!

I was thinking about how it resembles a Deflector Dish attack. Starfleet vessel deflector dishes have sensors ringed around them to bypass subspace distortion of warp travel. These when repurposed by reversing the polarity can allow the dishes to "fire" special particles.

Guesstimating from our continuum, the nose cone of rocket craft usually have some sensors inside. Also, these sensors being hull-mounted are much more reinforced than the underslung MSA, and won't snap off on recoil. So by subjecting the buzzard collector sensor suite to the same treatment, you get an improvised, low impact weapon that shoots science.

Also, it takes a Science bridge officer to be able to fire off a Charged Particle Burst or a Photonic Shockwave, and Misa is from Science. After all, to shoot a special particle weapon through atmosphere without main computer help would require micro-adjustments from someone who knows how to do it, ie, a Blue Shirt.

Or it could just be a Phaser Spinal Lancer dialed down to Low power settings. (Yep, Star Trek has both a Yamato, and a Wave Motion Gun, just that in 2 separate halves. It is not until 2412 when both Yamato and Spinal Lance were united as one)

Some are not special particles e.g. photons for laser beam function i.e. simulate photon torpedo burst in ST:Generations. In theory, Bentenmaru's nose section subspace impellor could be used as a powerful weapon.

Note that the Bodacious Space Pirates universe has it's own "phaser" weapons aka "Phaser Arrow" and it's illegal to own them without a proper license.

Given that this is the first time we've seen the bow actually do something other than just being the front of a ship, there's no reason to believe that it was doing something else entirely given the lack of evidence on the contrary. I also got the impression of a dedicated weapon from the fact that it was fired using the same style of button as the weapons (see episode 15 when Haramaki accidentally discharges the main cannons), and operated from the weapons console.

The various military and agencies of the Sea of Morningstar see pirates as potential force multipliers. As such getting one in their pocket is important. Maria is young therefore malleable but has potential as demonstrated by her first two crisis.

For the moment they are hands off! (That's sounds like a bunch of old men waiting for Marika to be legal.) But once Marika graduates high school all of them will be vying for her and Bentemaru's services. The military aspect of privateer pirates as it were.

After you mentioned it, I rewatched that part again, and yes I missed the part when they fired. The control was on the Tactical station and not at the conn.

@encia: I think I missed that one, got a time scale of Ben10maru deploying the nose cone impeller before jumping to warp?

Though in the Satelight Anime Night event, when Matsuoka (Sandaime) was asked who he would like to marry among the girls, he accidentally answered Madoka (LagRin) before changing his answer to Marika.

Hmmm. that seems like a very limited arc of fire for an anti-fighter/anti-missile weapon.

Though I have seen something like that before...the Comet Empire battleships have a "Magna-shock cannon" set that seems to fuction by twisting the enemy ship or fighters in something like an energy tornado.

However it might just be a redesign of their FTL drive, much like Marika figured out that the Odette II had a hidden weapon in its solar sail propulsion system. One of the Klingon axioms from their elite command academy is "On a warship, everything is a weapon".

In some respects the traditional Wave Motion Gun is just using the ship's engine as a weapon. Just directing all power into a concentrated beam of great power rather that using the same power through the drive sytems to make FTL travel possible.

It is fortunate that steam engines can't quite be used in this fashion, or else she'd have hundred thousand plus horsepower weapons on naval vessels in the 1920s.

Well, Ramming never came back in style after the age of sail, but it does convert all that SHP into a weapon.

That's pretty much my take on this newly displayed weapon. The 6 'cat eye' lasers that we've seen used extensively are the primary weapon, because they are versatile and can be aimed easily. This mini-wave motion gun can only be aimed by pointing the whole ship at the target, so it's really only useful for big or immobile targets.

I'm assuming the mini-wave motion gun was part of the original design, and the newer 6-gun system was bolted on during one of the many refits.
