The part about tokujou is merely stating that against different opponents, different strategies have to be used.

It's not bad when someone deals into me (and it might be necessary in all last depending on the score difference - see Achiga vs Kentani), but when I have a closed hand I prefer tsumo if possible, because it's worth more points. (Especially if the hand is chitoi - my perferred way to make a hand that seemed to have accumulated too many pairs, or large enough where the 10 fu from getting a ron is worthless, but tsumo might make the difference between 6000 all and 8000 all.)

I'd prefer closed tsumo, m'self. But, it's something for me to depend on. I've yet to get a good feel as to what tiles might be left in the wall to get a gauge on it. At the same time, I'd rather lose points by tsumo.

Points by ron, you get a net difference. You gain points, while an opponent loses points. At times, y'won't need a baiman tsumo, when a mangan ron will do just nicely. It is this point swing, that drives me to prefer points via ron at this point. Of course, the major disadvantage: it leaves all the other players alone.

I have to admit. During Live Tile games, I tend to forget accounting tsumo as a yaku when counting the points up.

Naw, I was out with my mahjong group, where we actually used a game to decide the next "Presidency". I lost by 700 points or so.

Oh... Wait 700 points? By points you mean During Game or total calculation one?(During game= Mangan baiman etc., total calculation: At the end of the game they calculate the difference.)

For me I was rewatching some animes so I am currently resting my brain from mahjong.(Though am watching mahjong anime, rewatching flashbacks 10 times for recent one.)

I am lamenting how on one hand (East 4 honba 2) -- I called riichi for a 3-6 man nobetan wait, instead of a 2-5 nobetan. The 3-6 call rendered me furiten, but I was too late to notice. The hand could have been won with a draw of a red 5-man. At least, I avoided chombo; but a mistake like that cost me from winning.

And I was feeling good too.

The reason for selecting 3-6. I did see the 3-man in my discard, but I was mentally thinking of using it as "suji" to win off the 6-man. Of course, this strategy didn't apply here.

This is totally random, but I'm going to stop going Tenhou whenever I'm sleepy and/or in a bad mood. I tend to play recklessly, and play into people's hands more often... and I could almost swear that my opponents tsumo a lot more often during my dealer rounds, which does wonders for my already bad mood.

Hey. That looks like my hand that I won a few months ago.

And wow. That dude's start hand. It went a long way for getting that double yakuman.

Ugh. OK. How do you change the tile faces in Tenhou? I used to know. But I don't remember how to do it right now.

A question has recently vexed me. It goes thus: In the pre-internet world it was not uncommon for certain games (chess and Contract Bridge being the commonest) to be played by correspondence, with players separated by (in some cases) whole continents; the only link being a letter, I was wondering if there were any cases of this being extended to Mahjong, and what were the mechanics of doing so?

I would imagine: notation would look like this.

Spoiler:

Even without images, tiles and all game actions can be denoted in text only. Naturally, graphical versions are easier to read.

But given that this game is best played among 4-people. It would have been extra difficult to execute correspondence mahjong.
