Was there such a rule? Then how come magazine scans are fine? They're essentially the same thing.
EDIT: Okay, there is, so I guess it would be fine if I just cropped it so it's the individual images rather than the whole page.

The problem with that scan is just to unsharp mask I guess. There should be an option in ur scanner which could unsharp mask. I played around with the settings a little when I tried scanning the illustration book, had that kind of problem too at first.
