Chitanda's comment is all the more suspicious when you consider that she wanted / pushed for the hot-springs trip in the first place. Was she... anticipating it?

In terms of mixed bathing, as far as I know, it was entirely the norm up until the point where Westerners started coming to Japan a lot in the late 19th century. To satisfy Westerners sense of decency baths were split into male and female sections - hence the common tall fence/divide that is placed in many pools.

I dont remember hearing about things having changed much in recent decades.
