I'd go as far to suggest that one of the reasons why Asuna won was because unlike the other girls, Asuna represented an entirely different paradigm than Sachi in Kirito's mind. The same didn't hold true for Silica or Lizbeth- even had Lizbeth tried, I think she would have failed.

Well I will agree with some of what you said, but Kirito may have had some romantic intentions toward Sachi. The reason I think this is because of the fact he was ready to possibly kill Klein and all those who stood in front of him to get the "Divine Stone of Returning Soul".
Even though he himself thought in internal dialogue that his actions maybe pointless. Sometimes love make us blind to the facts.
And there is also this which IMO implies romantic intentions:

No matter what curses or swears that might be thrown at me or any consequences that might befall because of my lies, this time I would hug her tightly with both my arms and look into the pair of black coloured eyes and say words from the bottom of my heart. And for Lizbeth, she never got the chance to tell Kirito how she felt because at the critical moment someone came in.

I do not see this as something romantic, The Kirito betrayed his own words, your attitudes it ended up killing the person who was most important to him at the time, he was destroyed inside, he reached a point where he would do anything to calm the feeling of guilt, even kill the first friend.

That maybe true and it may have been the feeling of guilt. But then again it is still possible that it may have been also for the reason I said . Love and desire can make people do stupid things and make mistakes. And I will say this again you maybe right and may have been his guilt that push him to to think this way.But like I posted before on my other post that "Quote" to me says romantic.

He got in a pretty good scream at the end of the first episode, I think.

Apparently another person thought so too because before the second episode even came out, someone made a remix using the OP, in which the lucky listener can Kirito's scream repeated several times.

.....it was after the third time I skipped ahead on my MP3 list....because I find repetitive screaming and noises in general rather annoying...

why do remixers have to do this!? Seriously, stop it.

Some thoughts I have on this matter:

Kirito in the light novels states that he views Sachi as a replacement imouto, though he does tend to be something of an unreliable narrator. I think a lot of what drives him in RNR is also guilt, because at the very least he felt affection for Sachi, who seems to have been the guild imouto, and he wasn't able to protect her.

It may or may not have been romantic in nature - even Kirito took a while to realise his own feelings for Asuna - but I agree that after Sachi died, there was no way he could look at an imouto-type character without being reminded of her.

Looks like he's still a newbie (aw he is two years younger than me!). I'm very fond of his voice and think he's doing a stellar job here.

I'd only heard him in his role as San-Daime, the beleaguered Chief Engineer of the Bentenmaru , in Bodacious Space Pirates, so I really can't say much. I do think that so far, he's doing a good job, and I'm liking how he's pulling this off.

To me IMO this implies romantic intention. And then there was something in vol 4 at the end whispered her name.

And on Kirito's seiyuu ,he is doing a great job.
And the only times I have heard him were on Kamisama no Memochou as the MC Narumi Fujishima and high School DxD as Freed Sellzen.
I like the first character and second hated him. But then again he was a bad guy.

I'm of the thought that Kirito didn't harbour any romantic feelings towards Sachi. I don't think he was oblivious of her feelings; but he just didn't feel that way, and even if he could had developed something for her, it was already too late.

If Sachi could've been revived, I feel that they would've developed an unhealthy romance, even if built on an obsession. But it would've been self-destructive.

Unless Progressive makes makes him suffer even more, I'd imagine Red Nose Reindeer was the Nadir of Kirito's experience in Aincrad.

I still wonder though what made him recover by Black Swordsman. Another thought: what if he had done as Sachi had suggested, and withdrew from the Black Cats together with Sachi?

There's alot of interesting What Ifs when Kirito is involved.

Such as:

What if Kirito decided to take up Klein's offer? Perhaps the entire Beater affair could have been greatly reduced, if quite a few Beta players attached themselves to pre-existing guilds. A few Beta Players publicly joining pre-established Guilds may have gone a long way to defuse the Beater affair - sure, there were many self-interested Beta Players (and many got themselves killed consequently for soloing), but quite a few too agreed to join Guilds carried over from other MMOs. Kirito had considered this in "First Day". On the other hand, he wouldn't have come to the realization that he missed Sughara, and may not have developed that Imouto complex that lasted until April 2024.

What if Kirito and Asuna continued travelling after Monochrome? The whole Black Cats Affair might have either been avoided, or at the very least, with the additional firepower of Asuna on board, the whole Wipe may have been completely averted. Then again, this means that Asuna may well not be joining the KoB, or the Black Cats in the end would be done in by becoming a Front-line Guild.

What if Kirito had taken up Sachi's suggestion, and withdrew from the Black Cats (Politely of course)? Would Sachi have died eventually (and if she had confessed by that time, it's even worse), Asuna's relation with Kirito either delayed, rendered more awkward (think Love Triangle nightmare), or completely butterflied away?

What if Kirito somehow ran into Silica earlier?

I'm sure some of those What Ifs Haunt Kirito. On the other hand, all those What Ifs led to an earlier conclusion to the Death Game. Then again, is Kirito really a man who asks the What Ifs?

All this of course are also delicious fanfic materials - one could write long full length (think of those massive Code Geass Stories like Dauntless, or the ZnT Crossover Epic: Hill of Swords long, or the long Nanoha stories on the fanfic thread.)A more general discussion of which probably belongs in the fanfic thread, but I wonder how Kirito's character might have evolved differently under these divergent choices.

In any case, I guess ironically, one of the reasons why Asuna won was because she MOST definitely did not occupy the position of substitute Imouto that Sachi and Silica held, but represented an entirely different paradigm of human contact with the opposite gender to Kirito.

In other words, Asuna's victory was, (and this sounds like a cruel case of murdering the Hypotenuse) almost certainly confirmed the moment Sacchi died on Kirito's watch, if not at the end of Red Nose Reindeer.

If Asuna was one year younger on the other hand, I wonder whether her odds would have been worse. Being older does have an advantage when Kirito is involved, I'd imagine, especially with the Imouto complex he developed from" First Day", which reached is Apogee with Sachi and scarred his romantic preferences after RNR.

I'm skeptically depressed that the anime Kirito may not have this kind of a character.

This spoiler doesn't really spoil anything plot wise. It's Kirito talking about what a professional gamer is. However I'll hide it as it is directly from the novel.

Spoiler for Volume 5 Ch1, What Kirito says that makes me smile uncontrollably:

"So, a «Pro» is someone who earns money constantly every month. Top players get around 200,000 to 300,000 yen[11] per month supposedly. If you compare that amount with real-world standards it might not seem like such a big deal... but, without luxuries, it's enough to live on. In other words, what it comes down to is that these people are making their income from the monthly fees paid by the players in the volume zone. That's what I meant by what I said earlier, about the top players in GGO being envied more than in other games. It's similar to a government official eating stupidly expensive cakes with taxpayer's money." (a lot more awesome when in context)

Well, at least, we do keep it in spoiler tag.

This is true, but I think the massive burst of activity did start with the assertion that Kirito was a Sue. That brought all the novel readers out of the woodwork.

pretty much. all jests aside, kirito and sachi just wasn't like that. while it could've evolved into a romantic relationship eventually, her death pretty much nixed that possibility.
