Trigun. OP male lead called a human typhoon with a huge bounty on his head for causing massive destruction all around... accidentally... without killing anybody...
Takes place on a planet that is like the old west and full of desperate people. The first half is comedic and wacky, despite the copious number of guns. Then Things Get Serious. The MC may be idealistic and OP but it has a price.
It does have a romantic subplot, though it takes a definite back seat to the main drive of the series. It's an older anime series but, if you haven't seen it, it's a good one. There is also an extensive manga that wasn't finished until ten years after the anime. There is also a recent film that is a side story that takes place late in the timeline of the anime series.

Watched bits and pieces of Darker than Black, was alright
Hagure Yuush no Ecstetica, that looks really interesting. Is the only place I can read it on CET?
Sword Art Online, read first two arcs, lost interest afterwards
Champione, really couldn't get into.
Watched GunXSword, was alright I guess.
Going to check out Samurai Champloo sometime soon, that looks cool too.
I dislike Aiki but I still like it enough to keep up with it...
I watched Trigun, I really hated but still liked it at the same time. I really liked the main character would he have not had the mindset (with just how he manages to get by on that) and the final bullshit scene where he magically cheats death and returns it onto his brother.

Get Backers (manga) - Both of main characters are already strong at the start, and reveal to be really strong later.
Code:Breaker - same as GB, though it's pain reading the early chapters but get better as the plot goes on, nice twist, troll flashback and all. And the romance is getting strong in the recent chapters.

Beelzebub, though its more about comedy, but it does have some good fights and the protagonist is OP mostly.
Fate/Zero - if you didn't like Fate/Stay Night don't worry this is on a whole new level, no need to see Fate/Stay night either as this is a prequel.
Berserk - has most of what you want.
Nanoha - protagonist is female in this one, and while she starts young the series follows her till her 19/20's and improves greatly with each season in everything, i think the last StrikerS could be right up your alley. When it starts it may appear more mahou shoujo then it actually is, with each season the anime breaks away more from that and becomes more technical.

The thing on Code: Breaker is correct, I dropped it due to the constant "the most powerful villain in the world has now appeared and is defeating the heroes. here, he'll learn the most powerful attack in the world and now has defeated the most powerful villain. oh wait, here comes the real most powerful villain in the world" & etc.
I'm followed up on Beelzebub
I'll check out Fate/Zero then with that in mind
Berserk, I read up to date and love
Nanoha...female protagonist is still a deal-breaker, I might look at it sometime or another though

Dragon Ball Z, in the unlikely event you haven't read/watched it yet, has the grand daddy of overpowered protagonists. I don't think any shonen manga character has even come close.

Chrome Shelled Regios's Layfon is overpowered, but he spends most of his time whining about how overpowered he is...

Though I'm not a big fan of it/I dislike it on grounds of the terminal condition of "the most powerful villain in the world has now appeared and is defeating the heroes. here, he'll learn the most powerful attack in the world and now has defeated the most powerful villain. oh wait, here comes the real most powerful villain in the world" & etc.

Read and folow Chrome Shelled REgios

Have watched and loved Code Geass.

I'll look at Akagi and One Outs sometime then
