Aren't tanks the main artillery support in case when there's no ship nearby to bombard those BETAs?

I think it's just a case of the plot designers not thinking things through and then saying "hey well in 2000 Russia uses T90s so they should have them here too". More likely they'd probably be using something like a T-55, but with a better gun and engine. Armor doesn't really mean anything anymore.

One thing about the TSF pilots, not everyone can be one. So conventional forces will still outnumber them. Them having better tech will be good for them and the people they support.
