Backwards compatability one generation back is almost a given now. Two generations back (Gamecube) would greatly surprise me.

It won't be able to play GCN games. People are expecting that Nintendo will be releasing GCN games in HD at discount prices like how PS3 and XBox 360 get HD games from that gen. 3rd parties are likely to jump on that bandwagon, too. I hope for Wind Waker HD, Super Mario Sunshine HD, Metroid Prime Trilogy HD, and Tales of Symphonia HD. I love Wind Waker and SMS is a good game that makes me feel happy and I never played through MP 2 and 3 and I never played through ToS, so I'd purchase all of those.

Everyone, beware of one of the Siliconera links in the post below. I clicked on a link and Avast! anti-virus blocked the page and said it blocked malware. It was the link for "Nintendo's other collaborations with Platinum."

So I read that the WiiU will be backwards compatiable with Wii games.

Does that mean ALL Wii games, or just some? I hope all, because then I'll finally be able to play Godzilla Unleased.

Unless stated otherwise I believe it's safe to assume that all Wii titles should be playable on the Wii U. Don't quote me on this though since I'm unsure. At least they haven't said that isn't the case yet if it is. Hopefully it gets cleared up soon since it isn't pretty important to a lot of Wii Gamers, especially since Nintendo still plans to release Wii Titles for a time even after the Wii U launch.

Most Wii games will work with Wii U. It may be that not every single title will work, though. This can happen with consoles and backwards compatibility. When PS2 released, it was able to play almost all PSX games, but not every single one. Sony released titles that weren't BC for every region.

Now here is a bummer about Wii U. This good friend I have that is an online friend told me he read on Neogaf that you can't play Wii, Virtual Console, and WiiWare games on the Wii U Game Pad. It seems like it would be a simple thing for them to implement, but it isn't. It would be very hard to, maybe to the point of never being worth it. Streaming content to the Wii U Game Pad works just fine when it is content made specifically for the Wii U, but Wii, VC, and WiiWare games are not coded for the Game Pad implementation. It is similar to how you can boot up GCN games on a Wii, but you can't use a classic controller on those games. GCN games just aren't coded for Wii controllers, and implementing that would not be worth it.

I figure that if Nintendo tried to make Wii, VC, and WiiWare games work on a Wii U Game Pad, it would only botch the compatibility of most titles, and instead of flawless BC, you'd get flawed BC when trying to play games on the Game Pad itself.

Ugh, I can't recommend that game because of horrible story pacing past a certain point that still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Of course, Tales of Symphonia had story problems right from the beginnng (with the game's plot relying heavily on typical RPG storyline cliches).

If Nintendo offers certain GCN games as HD versions and makes them available to buy digitally and download to your storage of choice, then perhaps Nintendo will make Metroid Prime Trilogy available for download (maybe they'll do some Wii games) or maybe they'll at least have HD versions of Metroid Prime 1 and 2. Either of those things are likely, you could argue, because it'd be easy money for Nintendo.

Seems Razor Edge is really going all out to fix a lot of the things that was wrong with NG3. The Ayane part was extremely brutal and she's ridiculously fast compared to Ryu.

First 3DS and now this. I really don't understand, what's the point region locking? Anyway, this is expected news.

Ugh more region locking? Darn it, that's why I'm angry at my 3DS because I want to be playing Awakening RIGHT NOW. That and I know games like SD Gundam G Gen 3DS wont ever come west side.

Sigh... I can still get those type of games on the Vita I guess.

Nintendo invented region locking when they chipped the NES. They feel this is part of their business model.

I wouldn't be surprised if developpers alike would rather prefer the region lock. While region locking is quite a pain for consummers, from a developper perspective, it leads to far less issues. Of course, the original issue was the technical disparity between NTSC and PAL, but the technical excuse is no longer applicable nowadays.
Recent Persona 4 arena fiasco is quite obvious: reverse importing can be a major deterrent for developpers to even localize the games (especially in Europe), since some people might just buy the game elsewhere, leading to a complete waste of resource.

That of course lead to more income since people who really want to import will either commit with importation (still a sold unit), or "better": buying both the console unit in their region and an imported one.

The PS3 was really the exception to the norm (the Xbox can be included, although the fine line between locked games and region free ones is still blurry imho).

I'm an avid gamer, and pretty much own all the systems minus the latest generation of portables (3DS, Vita). No matter how much I read about the Wii U, and no matter how much I see it at shows or try it, it remains as a grand "blah" to me. Nothing about it sticks out, and going HD just means it's finally catching up to the PS3, and 360.

ZombiU is the only launch title (that's exclusive) I'm interested in, so that definitely isn't helping things either. My biggest pain with Nintendo of late though, is the fact that they HAVE to develop games with their system gimmicks in mind. As an old school gamer, this bugs me a lot. I am a fan of this controller much more than the Wii's (which was interesting when it first came out), but in the end I'm still happiest with a classic controller. The latest Zelda (Skyward Sword) only confirmed that for me.

TL;DR there's nothing that convinces me to buy the Wii U at launch. Or even for a while yet, for that matter. Chances are I'll just buy it when that new Zelda comes out (if that trailer shown off months ago was any indication).

Well it's out, what does everyone think? It's a little too expensive to even consider for me at the moment, but from what I've seen it actually looks pretty entertaining. I hope Nintendo can make good use of it.

It's hilarious how people like this got screwed over because this is nowhere near the hysteria of the Wii. (And considering there's nothing close to Wii Sports, of course not lol)

lol @ the people having to sell deluxe versions @ the price of normals on ebay, this chick only wanted a $200 mark up lol.

Ooh the grumps got a Wii U? Hm, they seem to like it so far.

But that Animal Crossing game does look a bit unbalanced.
