It didn't have to, the islands are already under its defacto control, and I'm fairly certain that Japan knew the family wasn't going to sell the islands to PRC regardless of the price, I doubt anyone sane would've. Besides, I'm sure Japan could've blocked the sale if it ever gets that far.

So a Japanese official buying the land when it's in danger of being taken is understandable.
PRC getting upset about that is also understandable, since in their view it's theirs.

Rioting is completely another issue.
sigh... nobody here is saying the riots are justified, so I'm not sure why you keep bringing that up. And tbh, I seriously contest the idea that it was ever "in danger of being taken", the likelihood of that happening is probably about as high as the emperor penguins launching a worldwide invasion to destroy humans.

Japan could block the sale to Ishihara if it wanted to without any particular fuss. It's no different from PRC buying the islands.

eh, how would it block a legitimate land sale between private entities? Ishihara's funds were private donations, I don't see what legal grounds the government could've used to block the sale.

PRC on the other hand is a foreign state. No private citizen can simply just sell his land to be the territory of another country - I can sell my house tomorrow to any buyers if I wanted, but I'm pretty sure I can't sell it to Canada for it to become Canadian territory.

Never, it's why I keep a box of tuna in my house at all times, so I can throw them at the penguins to distract them as I run for my life!

PRC was using a puppet company for the offer.

They have a lot of those, being, you know, a communist state.

I'm pretty sure Japan's intelligence agencies is competent enough to figure those out, esp. given the close look a sale of this significance would've received.

!
Wasn't one of the issue was that Ishihara is buying senkaku in his capacity as Tokyo governor? So in other word, the one who owns Senkaku will be Tokyo instead of Ishihara personally.

Here is the news that indicate that.

That's correct. As a governor of Tokyo, it would give him authority over the land.

Oh wait, I get it. Ishihara DOES have a use for the Senkakus; the whole of Akihabara, along with its leeching NEETs and disgusting otakus have to go somewhere!

...I'll go get my coat.

But there's a different implication between buying it as governor of Tokyo and as an individual. Buying it as governor means that Tokyo is claiming senkaku as part of tokyo and Japan while buying it as individual(and buying using puppet company) doesn't imply any country claiming the island, although we all know Chinese government might actually not care about the islands possesion at all beside the natural resource under it lol

I am sure Indonesia is more willing to sell sand to them than Singapore at fairer prices, we just need the otaku living there to learn politicking and infiltrate their government......

Technically speaking, we undercut the Indonesians and bought sand from them thanks to our currency leverage. Sure it is cheap and helped us rake in profits at our integrated resorts, but karma always go a full cycle - now the casino is causing a public morals issue in the tiny island state.

It would certainly be good if the "offshore Akiba" uses some sort of new reclaimation technology complete with ocean-lab construction that can be used as a new trade port and tourist destination, something like the Kaesong Industrial Region in Korea.

Not OMG KILL THEM JAPS AND BREAK THEIR CRAP AND STEAL STUFF barbarism.
And worse, the government supporting the riots and inflaming it.

At the point you resort to that, you are no longer fighting on the same level.

China failed in proper response. That's all there is to it.
Just for those reasons alone, I hope to see all foreign companies pulling out from China and move all the factories elsewhere. A country full of 3-year-old tempers reacting like apes on something this minor can feck off wherever I see one. The rioters in China are exactly on the same level of stupidity as all those thousands (if not millions) of people in the Middle East/North Africa went apeshit over a very badly made video.

About Ishihara, we can say Ishihara this or Ishihara that, but who should give a crap about one guy? I'm pretty sure Joerg Haider used to have his Austrian followers who believed in the pro-Nazi stuff... so what? Most Austrians were still sane, Haider died in an accident, and the pro-Nazi stuff he preached mostly disappeared from the surface of Austrian politics. When Ishihara will quit politics or just kick the bucket, no one will care too much about what he said and he will end up being just another Haider in the history books.

Well, yes, sure, not many people will remember Shintaro Ishihara in the history books but, at the moment, he's very much in the news because he's one of the few politicians in Japan who says it as it is. He doesn't mince his words, unlike the vast majority of politicians who hide behind bland statements that say basically nothing. Everyone loves a straight-talker. And Ishihara is no fool. Everything has likely happened exactly the way he planned: forcing the national government to buy the islands and thus make a costly diplomatic stand on an issue it would have preferred to hem and haw over.

Hence even more reason for nationalistic, conservative Japanese to "love" him.

As of now, there is probably only one other Japanese politician who attracts as much media attention: Osaka mayor Toru Hashimoto. But that's news ("What Japan needs now is dictatorship") for another thread.
