As for Kaioshin Sama's assertion that otaku like strong, independent, females...I have to vehemenently disagree. What makes it infuriating is he obviously gets it, based on his talk about being relegated to a male lead they are "extreamely" devoted to, and this strange dichotomy among many anime fans continues to leave me gaping. How, exactly, is a female character strong and independent if they are clinging to some male lead's legs?
It's not that I think it's a good thing, it's that at this point I'll kind of take what I can get moving forward. Though that's why out of all of those recent female characters I keep mentioning that Kuroyukihime is the one that most stands out to me as a female lead of late. Of all of those I mentioned she's really the only one that doesn't cling to the male lead at all so much as he clings to her and sees her as the source of leadership and strength in their little group, because well...frankly she is. Though that also presents the other problem of the weak-willed male lead that struggles to stand up for himself without his warrior princess of a girlfriend. Not exactly a complete balance there.

The way I see it modern anime is taking baby steps into a better direction though when it comes to portrayal of it's main characters and what they do. When I look at the type of characters otaku seem to like most they appear to be weak-willed in general. Meaning both male and female characters are portrayed in vaguely insulting and demeaning fashion. What I see now though is at least an attempt to change the dynamic somewhat and make both sexes come off as at least a little stronger, independent and more competent even if one usually ends up being more so than the other and even if it's a VERY slow looking process. I don't expect these changes to happen or even be accepted overnight let alone over the course of a year though, especially in a society as resistant to social change of any kind.

Oh, I don't especially think otaku like strong independent females - they like their girls objectified and/or idealized, generally. I don't think it's especially idealistic to suggest there's more to commercial success than just a weak male lead. As I said, there are plenty of of commercially successful anime with no males in the main cast at all.

No male casts at all is even better for them and would be absolute gravy. No pesky competition to get in the way, meaning they can oggle and idealise all they want without any distractions lol The main thing I think is just hitting that wish-fulfillment sweet spot, the dull-characterless male lead is just one of the building blocks among many that are available of use in order to do so.

You know, this actually sounds a lot like Tsundere
While I think there is some adoration for strong independent women, it's nowhere the level that they have when compared to the more subservient types though. I.E Rei vs Asuka (Misato apparently wasn't even as highly regarded in Japan as she was in the West), Yuki vs Haruhi (I'm interested in how well Mikuru stacks up here too actually).

Second, I would certainly call Haiyore! a straight-up comedy - more so than Binbougami, in fact.
Well the thing about Haiyore is that the harem aspects gives it an edge over Binbo alone. When I mentioned straight up comedies, I wanted to refer to shows where the only thing it has going for it was the comedy by itself.

But it's nice to know that Nichibro's sold a bit better than Binbo though. I didn't know the exact sales figures only that it wasn't exactly the best around so thanks for sharing that. Perhaps the comedy with Nichibro's just struck a better cord with the market, being all skit-based and less reliant on an over-arching narrative. Maybe a little Fujoshi boost might've help carried it a little as well, who knows I guess. Either way, it'd be great if both shows could get more animated material

Yeah, in this case, we have all of the girls, with exception of Momiji, ogling after a responsible, handsome, strong mentality male character who none of audiences can relate to.....

So lesson learn here, you either have to go for spineless harem leads or yuri. Should just make this....

...official, sales can't be hurt anymore than current level.

Edit: too bad that Yamabuki onee-san didn't make much appearances this season. Want to see her claiming back her pride

I just noticed this series got a spot in the banner for the next big Jump Festa event, to take place in December, which is rather surprising. Could it be a good sign for a 2nd season?

Probably an OVA, Mago got a Jump Fiesta OVA after the first season and before the second season was announced. But that sold like 5k and actually spiked manga sales.....

Like I said before Shueisha tend to support their properties fairly well, which is why even though this sold half of High School Boys it has a higher chance of getting more animated matieral. (Not to mention that the High School Boys manga is now over as well)

I would be fairly confident in OVAs bundled with manga tanks....

The only Shounen manga without male protagonists?

And almost all of the fighting was done and between girls.

I wonder what are Japanese opinions on this anime. It sold so bad when it's faithful adaptation of manga.

As shallow as it sounds, I still think the anime's designs pale in comparison to the manga art.

about the jump festa poster, its possible for the manga to be ending soon, so it might be about that.

Where did you hear that?

And even if it were true why would they announce it at Jump Festa?

That the manga might be ending is something manga readers think given the events, and jump festa migth be as good as any place/moment to announce it.

after reading some of the comments here

hmmm...wish fulfilment.... (apparently the "loser" is us)
fushoujo's.... (sometimes being the reason for an anime existing)
not even wanting a decent MC...

exactly what does Japan want?

Yeah, i guess the anime went for a more generic art style, while the manga art has an original weirdness to it...also the girls look older.

IMO the poor disc sales of this shows are due to the fact that at the start of the show Ichiko is a bitch, she is just a step away from being villian material. Thanks to momiji she becomes a likable person, but by then all the female audience had droipped this show and many of the male audience that hava had dealt with self-centered bitches in real life had also left.

The good new is that (again IMO) shueisha will propel this manga as the new bleach (that is my opinion after looking at the pretty pictures in the rest of the manga) and therefore there will be a second (longer) season that is more action centered, much like what happened back in the day with Ranma 1/2.

Uh, no, just no, noone in Shueisha will think this is the next Bleach or try and turn it into that. Besides it's clear that Shueisha have been pushing Toriko to replace Bleach as a member of the "Big 3". Even though firstly Ao no Exorcist (from Jump Square like Binbo-gama ga) and Kuroko's Basket now both outsell it (especially AnE, like 750k vs 400k...).

Shueishas recent anime ventures....

Ao no Exorcist - Massive win, turned a 70k a volume manga into a 700k+ seller as well as doing over 10k in anime sales with a Movie on the way
Kuroko's Basket - Big, big win, turned a 200k seller into over 500k, anime is a big hit too doing over 20k in sales
Medaka Box - Failure, no increase in manga sales (170kish), anime sales sucked, only has a second season because that was the original plan
Binbo-gama - Failure in regards to the anime, manga might get a small boost, last volume opened @ 35k.
