Also is there a rational explanation given for Asuna, Kirito, and others starting another game after the previous one stole 2 years of their life and nearly killed them? Masochism? Addiction? Inability to have a real life?

If my memory serves me right ( I read SAO last month). SAO the anime covered Volume 1 (Main Arc) and 2 ( Side Stories).

If I read yours correctly.... It's the anime that has numerous time skips and rush episodes. The producers was trying to compress the two volumes into 14 episodes for SAO

Basically, its another game.. a replica of the Hell game... They, particularly Asuna wish to not only play but enjoy the game with her friends... she was so attached with the game where she found her lover Kirito.. They used it as a bonding place and a place to rest during the breaks in the real world...

Volume 1, 2, and the Aria in the Starless Night side story. The anime didn't adapt the First Day side story from Volume 8.. and few others that don't come to mind. Almost all of the main plot was adapted, though.

Don't expect much until the end of the next arc, but in later books there's a special school for students who were trapped in SAO.

Players of other games also sometimes meet in real life, which will play a role in subsequent arcs.

1) How did Asuna survive? Kirito killed Kayaba and freed everyone from the life-death fact, but that was after Kayaba killed Asuna.

2)Is there a rational explanation for how Kirito managed to come back from 0 HP and kill Kayaba? I'm not sure I understood that part.

3) Whatever happened to Kayaba? Is he still alive (I guess he is)? I'd think indirectly having 4000 people die is a somewhat huge crime so there gotta be consequences for him.

4) I read that Asuna will be captured in the upcoming game which means she won't be able to log out until a certain goal is reached. Does that mean that while there is no longer the life-death situation, her brain would still be micro'd if the NG was forcefully taken off?
I get the feeling that the NG is a very... dangerous killing tool if you can simply hack away someone's ability to log off and basically leave that person to rot away and die in reality. Seems like the NG needs better security or something.
