I agree with this.

@NinjaRealist. Personally, I think it’s quite simple (just like Tempester said): shows like Madoka Magica (magical girls, girly MC, feminine & colorful clothing, etc) is just not to your friend’s taste, and watching it will most likely make him suffer to a certain degree. Does it caused by his “narrow-mindedness” or “noobness”? Sometimes yes, but sometimes no. Sometimes you just can’t bring yourself to watch a show even though you’re well aware that it’s good (or a masterpiece even) due to some element in the show that you simply can’t stand (magical girls, girly MC, feminine & colorful clothing, etc). You shouldn’t be stressed about it, and you shouldn’t blame/ridicule your friend about it too.

Well if you run into that situation again you can try and add this:

"It's not a girl's show, this aired at 1:30AM in the morning, girls aren't normally watching TV at that time"

Worked on a friend after all else had failed.

People has different taste and likes in anime, just because, he, you, I, and they says "its Not" or "it is" and is opposite of what you think does not personally leaves you with the right to say what you think it is the right thought...

What am I saying...

Anyway, just live with you're own belief and leave him with he's own... Let yourselves to "agree to disagree"....

Hope I didn't confuse anyone with my statement...hehehe

There's a simple answer. Madoka is not aimed at girls.

Show him a real girl's show and explain the stylistic differences. Tell him that it's really twisted.

Though I've long given up on evangelizing. It's not worth the effort. The more you try to persuade the less likely they are to do anything.

To them, not a girls show is stuff like action shounen and the like.

I've had people see me watching Binbogami and ask me why I was watching a girls cartoon, even if it was suppose to be a rather gender neutral show or even slightly more male targeted show.
Referring to the parts of the post that I put in bold.
To a certain extent, I would heavily agree with that. I've been through a lot of situations where "why I was watching a girls cartoon" situations happened.

Fortunately, most of the anime fans (the people whom I go with to anime conventions are a good example) that I interact with outside the internet these days are anime addicts - in the sense that they won't say something like "why are you watching a girls cartoon?" when I watch something like Madoka Magica or AKB0048.

I seen a lot of people call anything slightly moe (including Madoka) "girly cutey shit". Unfortunate, but hey, your friend isn't alone in this regard, so don't feel too bad about it.

Are you really a doctor, or do you just play one on TV?

I remember the days when Vince Edwards was the heartthrob of the moment.

Tempest and Obelisk have already stated pretty much the same thing but:
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

If he's not interested, then there's not much you can do really. And trying to force him isn't exactly the right way to about it either. Sometimes you just have to let things be as they are.

Madoka is not a girls show, and it's awesome.

Heartcatch and Doremi are girls shows, and they're still awesome.

Good writing is good writing, regardless of where it comes from.

However, the second time you come back and say: "He said: 'it's still a girls' show with girly artwork with shock and awe'", give up

We all know Madoka is not a "girl's show" but I never understand why some guys are so afraid to watch a girl's show. Will their manliness be threatened or something? If it's a well written story who cares who the target audience is.

Well at least I admire a lot of guys on here who don't judge a series by its target audience.

Most of my favorite shows have female protagonists. Strong successful heroines often must deal with sexism at some point in their stories creating more grist for the dramatist's mill.

I also like shows in which the male and female leads play roughly equivalent roles. Oh! Edo Rocket is a good example of this. Sora is just as important as Seikichi, more actually in the greater scheme of things.

I personally don't decide what to watch based on its intended demographics. Being open-minded is the key to being happier

Well again he's less of a friend and more of just some random dude on the internet.

But I guess when I talk to people like this, I think back to how I avoided Revolutionary Girl Utena for so long even though everyone recommended it to me. But after the thousandth rec I finally gave in and watched it....

...and I loved it! I wish I hadn't been so stubborn all along. So when I see people like this, I see a bit of my younger self.
