Iran Plotting to Spill Oil in Strait of Hormuz, Magazine Claims

Quote:
Iran is secretly planning to spill oil into the Strait of Hormuz as revenge for Western sanctions, according to Der Spiegel.

The German news weekly claims to have spoken to Western intelligence sources who say they have obtained Iran's classified report on the operation, which has the potential to create an environmental disaster.

Seriously, if BBC publish an article saying that it was George Washington who liberated the black slaves, or Nobunaga was an hero during the Meiji restoration, won't you think it is silly and should never have happened?
But I wouldn't particularly care if they said Commodus was killed by one (ex-)general Maximus.

All that happened here is they didn't fact check a quote by someone from Harvard University. A quote whose historical accuracy wasn't even relevant.

Was Mike Harrris ( sorry if I mispelled it) any better ?

A question thought, where the spill would be more likely to go, which country is more likely to get their plage stained by the oil ?

That just shows your pettiness given that you're setting unusually high standards when it comes to things related to China.

For the former, I would think so, but for the latter? No. One should have the decency to recognize that because some people in here know all around history, it does not extend to everyone who might not have the sufficient knowledge to differentiate people in history of different cultures, especially the cultures that is on a relatively far away land or has no close connection to it.

Actually, wouldn't that be like saying Andrew Johnson said something to his troops at New Orleans? Or that Lyndon Johnson got impeached. Or that Michael "Stonewall" Jackson was a General in the Confederate Army.

If you don't know the history well, and the names are similar, that you can easily make a mistake like that.

All accusations of relative cultural/national/historical sensitivity aside -- I'm more concerned about the inaccuracy of those statements and that they are implied to be direct quotes from Peter K. Bol, who is a Harvard Professor on East Asian Languages and Civilizations.

Everyone should be aware and vigilant about potential personal cultural biases, but c'mon folks, let's all get along here..

PS: Someone should email the BBC btw, just like how I suggested @TinyRedLeaf to email Reuters about their inaccuracies. Let's add to the human body of knowledge (and fix the mistakes therein) people!

A growing body of opinion seems to think liquid air is the answer (or, more specifically, the nitrogen component that makes up 78% of air). It is not exactly a new idea. Air was first liquefied in 1883, using essentially the same process as today—ie, compressing it to 200 atmospheres, cooling it to -190ºC, and then letting it suddenly expand and condense. The process turns 1,000 litres of transparent gas into 1.4 litres of light blue liquid.

As long as its storage container is well insulated, liquid air can be kept at atmospheric pressure for long periods. But on exposure to room temperature, it will instantly boil and revert back to its gaseous state. In the process, it expands 700-fold—providing the wherewithal to operate a piston engine or a turbine.

Liquid nitrogen does an even better job. Being considerably denser than liquid air, it can store more energy per unit volume, allowing cars to travel further on a tankful of the stuff. Weight for weight, liquid nitrogen packs much the same energy as the lithium-ion batteries used in laptops, mobile phones and electric cars. In terms of performance and range, then, a nitrogen vehicle is similar to an electric vehicle rather than a conventional one.

How much energy would be needed to process and convert all that to a liquid state, and manufacture the equipment to keep it in such a state until used as a fuel source.

And where will this energy come from?

A pair of US sailors have been arrested for gang raping an Okinawan woman they plucked off the street, with the incident threatening to further inflame anti-base sentiment in Okinawa, even as Japan’s legion of online rightists provoke widespread disgust by attempting to recast the rapists as innocent victims of an evil Chinese “honey trap.”
The incident occurred on Okinawa, where a Japanese woman was on her way home from work at nearby dining establishment at around 4AM one morning, when a pair of men she had never met before accosted her and sexually assaulted her.
She suffered minor injuries to her neck during the attack, and may also have had her bag stolen. Both men were said to have been drinking. She fled to safety, and the incident was soon reported to police.
A brief manhunt ensued, and the first of the suspects, 23-year-old Seaman Christopher Browning, was arrested at 7:30AM the same morning at a nearby lodging.
Subsequent searches turned up Petty Officer Third Class Skyler Dozierwalker, also 23, on a nearby street early in the afternoon.
They face a variety of charges ranging from gang rape to assault. One of the men admits the charges, whilst the other maintains they are “mistaken.”

Skyler Dozierwalker? Sounds sort of like one of those mid-20th century sci-fi names (NounVerber).

There are quite a few 24hr eateries around the world, particularly in big cities. I'm talking legit stuff to, not something shady like a 'gentlemens club'. So she could have been working at a 24hr diner, or fast food joint.

Feds: 1 Arrested in Plot to Attack Federal Reserve
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/f...6#.UH8N6ULWlQZ
Quote:
Federal authorities on Wednesday arrested a man they said was plotting to blow up the Federal Reserve building in Manhattan, just blocks from the World Trade Center site.

Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, was arrested in a sting operation Wednesday morning after he parked a van filled with what he believed were explosives outside the building and tried to detonate it in a suicide mission, authorities said.

Earlier in the day, he went to a warehouse and assembled what he believed to be a 1,000-pound bomb using inert explosives provided by federal agents. He also recorded a videotaped statement in which he said, "We will not stop until we attain victory or martyrdom," federal prosecutors said.

When will China have their own Charles Dickens to expose all of these? I don't mind being the factory supervisor for the females department though......
