College Torrent problems.

My college operates on an open wifi system. There are multiple hotspots and people just connect. So, torrenting used to be easy 2-3 years ago, just fire and forget. Well, IT cracked down on it, and it stopped working. Well, since the MU bust, I was at a loss to do.
One of my friends showed me Tixati, a torrent client. IT WORKED! Strangely though, bittorrent and utorrent don't work still. Sometimes the client takes a while to start working, like, I know their are peers, but it will wait minutes to hours to find them.
Does anyone know why?

I think it's possible that some institutions do not allow for certain ports to be opened: these ports probably include the ones that torrents require to make a connection to the peers. For instance, I can do direct downloads from my lab machine no problem, but torrents do not work because the ports are not set, and are controlled by the IT team.

Well yeah, but why would certain programs work, but others not?

Different programs use different ports to communicate. Institutions will most likely be familiar with the more common torrent programs and block their ports to conserve bandwidth, but lesser known programs might slip through on the virtue of being obscure. Their activities might nonetheless cause the system to throttle it, accounting for slower subsequent access.
