Whoever wrote the beginning of the episode was on a serious freaking drug trip.

Pretty underwhelming episode after the last two. Basically it was a bunch of confusing stuff followed by a whole lot of boring and repetitive stuff. Episode could have definitely used better direction.

Beyond that, does anyone get the impression that Satoru was acting like a fox in the henhouse?

gotta say, the direction of both the previous and this episode leaves something to be desired.

It's usually not a good sign when you start to feel that too many things are left unexplained and missing.

The first part of the hallucination was trippy as hell. I felt that the Saki unlocking Satoru's powers was kind of deus ex. Did she only just remember his "mantra" word when she had her vision/flashback?

^ yup thought the same.

Saki knew Satoru's Mantra with her writing pad trick back in school. Also she seemed to have realized that the sealing ritual with the fire was just some sort of hypnosis/conditioning, probably due to the information from the library. So she just used the same ritual with Satoru"giving back"his mantra.

wonder why she didn't ask satoru to do the same for her.

Probably because he never got a good look at her mantra.

Wow, so it was only Satoru Saki was willing to share her mantra with? Man, they should show more stuff like that, as I find it more endearing than their usual bickering. Makes me want to root for Satoru more if they do so.

As for Satoru, wonder if he's gonna turn into one of those monsters in the future, now that he had a taste of power. Although I do find he was a bit stupid, considering that if the monk didn't stand a chance against the enemy, how would he fare? Surprised they didn't just sic those blowdogs on them and blow them up like they did the monk...

Which, actually, is part of the reason that this gives me the stinking feeling that this was all set up. It's just so convenient that the paths they took was all ambush, but the last one put them right at the heart of the enemy clan. I dunno, something is wrong here.

yes Satoru doesn't know Saki's mantra , she should tell him they're in a major pinch after all, unless she has deep reasons for not wanting to share her mantra to satoru.

I really have no problem with Saki unlocking Satoru's mantra, I do wish though they added the mantra scene in the first or second episode instead of just a flashback just before the unlocking scenes.

But what really baffles me, and it has been pointed out by others here, is why the hell didn't Saki ask Mamoru to unlock her cantus? Just tell him her mantra and repeat the lines of the priest. Now obviously just saying the lines would have failed and there's more to the hypnosis (Saki being surrounded by a glow) but at least the viewer would get a better grasp of this.

Instead they skipped this and the rest of the episode consisted Satoru using his cantus to kill things, Saki telling him he should stop/head back followed by Satoru telling her it would be futile and they should wipe out the spider ground clan first.
The only positive I can say about these scenes is that we got to see cantus in its full power and if a kid can do this much...

Anyway I'm starting to get worried about this series, the first four episodes were fantastic but the quality of the last two episodes weren't anywhere close to that.
Checking ANN they had a newbie as the episode director and doing the storyboards. Can't we just have the team who did the first four episode do the entire series?

Satoru did say that the monk used his cantus defensively, which failed, and if they want to have a chance of surviving this that they should use their power offensively in order to defeat the enemy. The best defence is an offence and all that.

She can't because Satoru never saw her mantra well enough to remember it, and she can no longer tell him what it is because it's been erased from her own memory.

the gas made her saw hallucitantions. than she had a feeling that this was close to when she was hypnotized, so this was her cahnce to tell satorou his mantra

Then how did they write their own down in the classroom?

Honestly while yes I do feel the beginning of the episode could have been done better I still had this "it's over already" reaction to it when it was done.

The director storyboarded the first three episodes himself, you can't expect him to storyboard a whole two cour show.
And anyway most of the issues people are having with this episode seem to be more of the scriptwriting/series composition type than storyboard/episode direction.

That was before they wound up in this situation. The priest sealing their Canti likely meant forgetting their own mantras, so Saki could remember Satoru's but not her own, unless the novels described otherwise.

That was a very strange episode, whole thing was weird and inexplicable. Kinda disappointing couple of episodes, hopefully it picks up again soon

The hallucinations at the beginning of the episode were trippy as hell (naked Shun turning into that creature, lol wut). It was very smart on Saki's part to use that opportunity to reproduce the ritual in order to awaken Satoru's cantus again. I was under the impression they could use any word as their mantra, but that is apparently not the case since she needed to use Satoru's old mantra.

Satoru was pretty awesome in this episode (his cantus is very versatile, I was impressed by all the things he could do), but he's already starting to get drunk on power. Hopefully, Saki will be able to bring him back to his sense, otherwise I'm afraid it won't end well for him. I still have the karma demon tale in mind.

The episode ended on quite the cliffhanger. I'm dying to see the next one. How are they going to escape this predicament? Satoru's powers will not be enough, besides, he is exhausted.

Satoru was always a brash little boy but I never saw him as truly violent or mean-spirited – just a typical genki kid with too much energy and a streak of braggadocio. In short, I think what happened this week wasn’t some character flaw in Satoru – any one of the children would have reacted to the taste of blood the way he did. And there’s no question that the feeling of power he got from killing all those Ground Spiders have him a major rush (who knows, maybe sexual frustration made it even worse). So was giving a cantus to a PK with no choice but to use it in self-defense really a good idea? Though, to be fair, it’s not as though Saki had much of a choice either.

That’s the essence of the matter for me – the pure thrill a PK gets from slaughtering Muggles is exactly what those scientists spent all those centuries trying to bury so deep that it would never again see the light of day, and now that it has I’m not sure the genie can be put back in the bottle. I still don’t know exactly what Queerats are – though I’m certain their connection to humans is very direct – but I don’t think it matters much to the PK doing the killing.
