Yeah, I don't see why everyone is saying Cryska is winning either. Even with anime standards of what constitutes romance (i.e. any kind of communication) I can't see anything beyond "I kinda like you so I'll listen to you" from Cryska's side. While it's pretty much in her contract to fall for the MC, it doesn't mean the guy has to return her feelings. He just talked to her. MCs have done far, far worse without falling for the girl.

It fits with Cui's personality, she likes to fight on even ground. Just like If she hadn't wanted to fight Yuuya 1 on 1 than her team would have wiped the floor with his far less coordinated one. I'm sure she sees the situation sorta like she needs to beat Yui fair and square if her getting with Yuuya is going to be meaningful. Besides, it's no challenge or fun if her main opponent(She doesn't seem to acknowledge the Scarlet Twins as much for some reason) in love lacks a backbone when it comes to her feelings.

I feel like the episode is trying to communicate to me some grander message, but just let down by the execution/performance. It's there, but I just can't really grasp it.

I'm not sure if i'm overestimating or underestimating the show

For me the show is a slightly above average political one plus a slightly above average harem one a slightly above average mecha, so I don't expect any individual part of it to be particularly good but try to enjoy the sinergy of it.
