If heterosexual relationships are discouraged, there has to be more to it than contraception. How much do we know about how reproduction works in this society? Is Saki the natural offspring of her parents?
Abortion is not exactly rainbows and sunshine, though? Not something that people could just work into the system as "oh well, if someone gets pregnant we'll just abort it," especially with the people being such very sexual creatures. It would seriously endanger the entire "living peacefully" basis of society. Not to mention that these people have a built-in restraint against causing harm to other humans, and regardless of intent and purpose, you can't exactly do abortion without harming someone pretty heavily. And I don't even know what sort of conditioning you would need to make every single human woman, regardless of personality, be able to perform something so heavy and painful on themselves without psychological trauma (never mind the possible physical complications!).

And as for birth control, for one, the society doesn't seem to be particularly technologically advanced. Sure, they can do amazing things with their powers, but that doesn't seem to include creating material like, say, rubber. And sure, there are other, much more rudimentary methods of contraception, but those are not exactly reliable (otherwise humans wouldn't have worked so hard on perfecting the condom, ha). And anyway, even if they had a more or less reliable method: would you trust teenagers to be careful and always pay attention? Especially when they're conditioned to indulge in sexual intimacy as freely as possible?

Two, the attitude to sexuality in this show keeps reminding me of Huxley's Brave New World (I don't remember if the book ever touched on bi/homosexuality, though, IIRC everyone was conveniently straight). In that novel people are conditioned to be very promiscuous and they have a very strong sex drive, EXCEPT part of the population is neutered, and girls who are not are conditioned, very heavily, to do all the necessary contraceptive steps to prevent pregnancy.

We haven't seen anything like that in Shinsekai yori, perhaps due to the lack of technology necessary to produce reliable contraceptive materials, or lack of trust in teenagers' ability to be responsible, or perhaps just as a way of retaining control over society. So instead of that they condition kids to have sex with people of the same sex, and create very strict rules about sexual activities between men and women (fwiw this is mentioned in the novel, more than once), until they are ready to produce and raise children.

I think it's either Satoru or Shun, or it's supposed to be "anyone."

If they could detect a fertilized egg entering the wall of the uterus, removing it from there wouldn't cause much physiological trauma.
And for all we know, everyone in the village might eat hormon additives (or even nanites) with the food. In fact I would be surprised if they didn't.

With that "danger" removed there wouldn't be a need for them to know about human reproduction until they're adults.

But can they even do something like that? Their power is basically psychokinesis, that doesn't cover something so microscopical and biological as that... Messing around with cells in your own uterus would require control over your body on the level of I dunno, the Bene Gesserit in Dune.

I'm not convinced yet that they don't have some sort of advanced technology left (like in Star Trek: Insurrection they just don't need it for everyday use).

Well yes, there are the library critters, wandering the woods and doing whatever library critters do when they're not being interrogated by meddling kids. I don't know if they ever said when they were created, though.

The norm said to be with someone, and she chose the most convenient... twice!

She also waited for Shun to break up AND get exiled before attempting anything, and even half-hearted at that.

I can understand why, having her as the narrator, helps a lot to figure out the way she is thinking, even with all the problems the anime has.

Agreed, and in any case the line between so close friends and lovers is not clear always.

Sexual behavior is learned, not inherited in humans and most animals... we are not born straight/gay/bi- we develop those tastes influenced by family, friends and the society we grow up in... in that sense we (as well as the characters of this anime) are conditioned.

There's a lot of scientific literature that would suggest sexual orientation is neurobiological.

I get the impression that people in this world still have a "main" (or natural) sexual orientation. They are just conditioned by society into thinking that being bisexual is the norm/it's a good thing/it's expected of them.

Any behavior has a neurobiological source... the question is inherited or developed?

Well, biotechnology that allows a created being to store and recall information as a living library would be considered quite advanced technology.

Aside from that, this society reminds me more of what happened in Babylon 5 (a really good sci-fi series that was amazingly advanced for its time). In one episode, the timeline 1000 years in the future had a society that was sent back to the stoneage due to war and destruction, but there are still some advanced people of society that are slowly integrating and guiding the society back to prominence.

I believe the scientists are serving that function right now. They could be the ones watching behind the scenes and guiding the current society we see.

Sex ed is usually taught around the ages of 11-13... just how young is it supposed to be taught, nursery school?

I read spoilers of the novel.

In the novel says that intercourse between minors is prohibited by their society. Of course a guy and a girl (who are minors) can make other kind of sex (oral job, hand job), but intercourse is forbidden for them (there is even regular body check to confirm that).

I know that... so being homo is better (no offense to them)?

I mean, declaring that everyone has to be one for the sake of population control...? Sorry but I may be close to my friends but not to have sex with them (either male of female) unless I really love the girl and with her consent and after marriage....

Spoiler for Novel Spoiler:

That save my heart there... +

Well, these kids are probably bi-sexual. I mean, they're probably engineered in some way to all have at least some level of same-sex sexual attraction. Either that, or simply being a PKer makes you bi-sexual.

Hehehe, the problem was the opening scenes made them not bisexual....

Not sure what opening scenes you are referring to, but I thought the story lesson on episode 4 made it pretty clear that they are. The scenes with Saki getting it on with a boy in episode 5 and then with a girl in episode 8 seem to confirm that to me.

So its not instinct why males go on with a naked girl than another naked man?

Episode 5 is more of innocent making experiments....

Episode 8 is do what is supposed to be done....

Episode 5 is not 'innocent making experiments'. It's already been strongly hinted that sex is nothing new to them even then. The manga even highlights it excessively. The only reason they stopped was because Saki was thinking about the rainbow library creature's words.

So they do it at that age? 12? With both?
